As I stated at our last council meeting, I wish to thank all my Brother Knights for your vote of confidence demonstrated by electing me to represent our great council over this coming fraternal year. It is humbling to be chosen to fill the shoes of those who have served our council in the past and through their efforts and guidance have made it the outstanding council it is today. With your help we will carry on those traditions. We have already started off the year on the right foot by Ken Akerly and his dedicated committee's most successful blood drive followed by Joe Stafford and his committee's fantastic scholarship awards and outstanding picnic. A sincere thanks to all for jobs well done. New First Degree Members Paul St.Amand Membership Chairman reporting I am pleased to announce that three new Brothers made their first degree on June 11, 2010, at St. Kathryn Parish in Hudson, NH, hosted by the Council 5162's degree team. Captain Mike Amorelli's team did their usual outstanding job in the Exemplification of the virtue of Charity. From left to right in the photograph are Charlie Jacobs, Chris Alphen, and Jharid Pratt. Charlie is a parishioner of MQP, and was sponsored by Jim Scharn; Chris is from St. Joe's and was sponsored by Butch Kealey; Jharid is from MQP and sponsored by his father, Ed Pratt. On July 18th I attended my first Quarterly Meeting and bring back the best wishes from our State Deputy Ed McCann along with his assurance of total support by himself and his staff. Well, I realize there is much work to be done and look forward to a successful year. Once again I thank you all for your support. Keep in your prayers our brother Dennis Groulx. Dick Collopy G.K. I would like to thank Brothers Jim Scharn and his father-in-law, Alan Phair; Ed Pratt and his older son Marcus (a PGK from St. Anslem College Knights' Council 4875); and Dennis Groulx (who co-piloted us through the back roads of Pelham). Your presence as witnesses added to the dignity of the event. Congratulations to our new Brothers, and welcome to our council!

Soldier Aid Paul St. Amand reporting The mission continues with sending out packages to our troops. Most of the packages are going to Afghanistan now. I received a nice note from one of the contacts. She is a Marine in the MALS-16 Supply unit.. For security reasons, I will only identify her as CWO2 Jennifer nnnnn... Here is what she wrote: Dear Members of the Knights of Columbus, Thank you so much for all of the Tootsie Rolls! Believe it or not, Tootsie Rolls are so very loved out heree! Thank you so much for the history that you wrote; I had no idea. [See the previous newletter for the history of Tootsie Rolls in the military PSA] Thank you for the wonderful picture you sent; you all look like a lively crew! [I included a picture of members of our council, giving a Thumbs up! Salute to our troops.] I hope this letter finds you well. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, CWO2 Jennifer nnnn. Our troops appreciate the donations made possible by the generosity of you, my Brother Knights in this council. I thank you for your support! Attending Degrees as Spectators: I would encourage all members to attend any of the Degrees as a spectator. Show support for our members who are advancing in the ranks of Knighthood. And, by attending, refresh your own memory of each degree and its lesson in Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. If you were like me when you made your degree, you were nervous and maybe a bit overwhelmed, and you didn't take in all the beauty and meaning of what was presented. But as a spectator, you are at ease and can let the words sink in. Come attend again, you'll like it! Call me, Paul St.Amand, and I will give you our upcoming schedule. HELP WANTED! I need an assistant membership deputy. As the membership chairman, there have been times when I am away and can't get to an interview or to a degree ceremony for our candidates. I usually end up pushing off the entire process and making the candidates wait until my schedule is open. Although it only happens about two or three times a year, that delay is not good. I would like to have a back-up, someone who could keep the process moving. This would not be complicated and would take only a few hours of time once a month, ONLY WHEN NEEDED, only when I cannot do the work myself. (There were just two times in 2009.) The qualifications would be that the deputy has a cell phone, can drive a car, has an e-mail account, and is willing to help our fellow brother Knights in their advancement through the degrees. I have written up a full set of instructions (since I don't depend on my own memory!) that explains everything. I would ask my prospective deputy to shadow me on the next interview and a degree. After just one time through the process, you would be an expert! Again, I am only asking for backup ; I am not asking for full time help. Is there someone willing to help me? The Red Cross collected 66 good pints of blood. The Salem Council #4442 rates very high on the list of blood drive locations. The crew from The Red Cross are always appreciative of the warm reception and cooperation they receive from our volunteer staff and of course our Italian Fare Lunch. Many thanks to the following people who contributed to having a successful drive. Please be aware that there is a new Hall Rental agreement that will be sent to you for your signature when you indicate your wish to rent the Hall. Also, please be aware that you must be a member of Council 4442 and/or Assembly 0641 to rent the Hall. Also, during the rental period, you must remain at the hall. During the winter months, Chanel Simard should be contacted at 603-898-4950. The basic charge is $200 plus an additional $100 deposit that will be returned if you leave the hall in the shape it was in when you rented it. If you wish to use the Pots and Pans along with the dishes etc, there is an additional $100 fee which is non-refundable. A calendar is maintained in the Council Home with dates for all rentals and Council events. It is not the bible however, so you need to check with the rental manager before you plan an event to make sure the date is open. Just because someone puts a date down on the calendar does not mean that it has been confirmed with the rental manager. Remember, unless it is an actual Council event, no lit candles are allowed on the tables as part of a centerpiece. We have also put in new thermostats which are automatically set at 60 degrees. If you are using the hall and want to reset the heat, you need to reset it by touching the hold button and moving the arrow key until you reach your desired temperature. You should reset it back by bringing it back down to 60 before you leave. The system does have an auto override that will automatically reset the system to 60 at 6:00AM and 6:00PM. Keep this in mind if you are in the hall in the afternoon and your party will be overlapping past 6:00PM. You will need to reset it again. Hopefully this will save us energy costs as we had many people leave the heat on high accidently and it stayed that way for days.

Fourth Degree Assembly #0641 News Our Assembly 0641 has again been busy with funerals and ordinations please remember our fallen brothers in your prayers as well as our Priests and religious that give so much of themselves. Summer is upon us and we start a new fraternal year, we have many things to look forward to, Holiday parades, picnics, travel to see friends and family please be safe. Sir Knights we need your ideas and your participation to make our assembly a vibrant group of Catholic men, the moniker " I'm a Fourth Degree Knight" only goes so far. The Patriotic Degree should be more to you these days than a slogan. We as a group should be active in our government, maybe signs at the polls like " Don't re-elect anyone", "Term limits for all". Many people thought that changes were in order and they were right, but it seems we are digging a very deep hole and the people many thought were the answer have failed badly. Remember we are off for the summer, meetings begin again in September third Wednesday 7:30 pm Rosary followed by the meeting, it lasts only an hour so try to attend. If a honor guard is needed please call me and I will try to muster the troops, my number is 603-361- 0909. Thank you for all you do. Right to Life New Hampshire Right to Life is proud to announce that the speaker for our Annual fundraising Banquet, to be held on Thursday, September 16th, 2010 at the Executive Courtyard in Manchester, will be Dr. Alveda King.

DR. ALVEDA C. KING works toward her purpose in life, to glorify God. Dr. King currently serves as a Pastoral Associate and Director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries. She is also a voice for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, sharing her testimony of two abortions, God's forgiveness, and healing. The daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A.D. King and his wife Naomi Barber King, Alveda grew up in the civil rights movement led by her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Her family home in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed, as was her father's church office in Louisville, Kentucky. Alveda was jailed during the open housing movement. She sees the prolife movement as a continuation of the civil rights struggle. Dr. King is a former college professor and served in the Georgia State House of Representatives. She is a best selling author; among her books are How Can the Dream Survive if we Murder the Children? and I Don't Want Your Man, I Want My Own. She is an accomplished actress and songwriter. The Founder of King for America, Inc., Alveda is also the recipient of a Doctorate of Laws degree from Saint Anselm College and sits on the Board of Georgia Right to Life. Dr. King lives in Atlanta, where she is the grateful mother of six and a doting grandmother. To reserve tickets for this extraspecial event, please call the NHRTL office, 626-626-7950, or e- mail life@nhrtl.org. speak. When she was on Glenn Beck some weeks ago her story made him cry (of course he cries a lot, but it was a moving testimony to the saving grace of God) (ok I will admit, it brought tears to my eyes as well). Relay for Life Events Hi All, The breakfast today was a tremendous success that netted us $876.00 thanks to a couple of generous donations, $50.00 from Bob Gaudette and $25.00 from Beatrice Lavoie. This money was the result of some hard work by the Relay team and I am sure I missed someone on this email. This $876.00 will be added to the $1430.00 that I have already turned over to the council and we will be able to present a check at bank night for $2306.00. There will be other donations that Wil Bamford and Stan Gorgol traditionally collect as cancer survivors which will bring this total up even more. Combined with the online donations we should have in excess of $3000.00 before relay. Thanks again to the relay team who made this possible. Ralph Miele Cell: (603) 475-8579 Photos from the event Jordan s note: I have only heard and read about this remarkable woman. Here is an opportunity for each of us to meet Dr. King s niece and a woman dedicated to the struggle for life today. I am sure the Pro- Life Director of the Knights will have some suggestions regarding assisting in hearing this woman

dismay, that only Ernie was left. 'Ernie, do you have a story to share?' 'Yes ma'am. My daddy told a story about my Aunt Karen. She was a pilot in Desert Storm, and her plane got hit. She had to bail out over enemy territory, and all she had was a flask of whiskey, a pistol, and a survival knife. She drank the whiskey on the way down so the bottle wouldn't break, and then her parachute landed her right in the middle of 20 Iraqi troops. She shot 15 of them with the pistol, until she ran out of bullets, killed four more with the knife, till the blade broke, and then she killed the last Iraqi with her bare hands.' 'Good Heavens,' said the horrified teacher. 'What kind of moral did your daddy tell you from this horrible story?' K of C Prayer Line Please give a moment of prayer asking God to send down his healing powers for all of those whom we have listed in our Prayer Line Book as well as those who lie in the silence of our hearts. 'Stay the heck away from Aunt Karen when she's been drinking.' Ernie is doing detention all week! Moral The teacher gave her fifth grade class an assignment: Get their Parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it. The next day, the kids came back and, one by one, began to tell their stories. There were all the regular types of stuff: spilled milk and pennies saved. But then the teacher realized, much to her
