World Marriage Day I remember being a young lad in the seminary and reading John Paul II s powerful document Familiaris Consortio (The fellowship of the Family) in which he wrote: humanity passes by way of the family. While the family is the foundation of humanity, marriage is the foundation upon which all families and, therefore humanity, are built. As a parish we ve been striving to live out our call to be a House of Prayer and a House of the Poor by increasing our service to the spiritually and materially poor (ourselves included) but we ve also been trying to improve the way that we care for them. When I look upstream seeking the roots of poverty, I often find broken families. There s no doubt that by strengthening marriages, we strengthen families, and by strengthening families we strengthen humanity. In fact, one of the best tools in preventing and alleviating spiritual and material poverty is Christian marriage. For that reason, the Catholic Church, and our parish in particular, encourages married couples to continually foster the growth of their marriage. The most effective thing a couple can do is to pray together - as a couple - every day, including celebrating Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly. Secondly, married couples should never get too busy for a regular date night. Third, participate in an outreach ministry together. Couples are better parents when they are strong couples. Be a joyful steward of your marriage! Here are some other opportunities to grow in love: Marriage Preparation at St. Edward: We have a wonderful marriage preparation program at St. Edward the Confessor. If you or a family member is thinking about getting married, please contact the parish office for information. Remember, Catholics can marry non- Catholics in the Catholic Church. Marriage Enrichment Ministry at St. Edward offers a time and space for couples to focus on each other and gather with other couples. Marriage Enrichment meets monthly on the first Thursday, 7:30 9:00 pm in the Parish Room of the Parish School. Topics include communication in marriage, living our Catholic faith, and meeting the challenges of being married and raising a family in the modern world. Each topic is intended to affirm the ways we enrich our marriages and help us to improve where we can do better. Husbands and wives of all ages and years married are welcome. To verify the next meeting, see the church bulletin or simply contact Bob & Mary Dausch (949) 481-1102 dauschr@cox.net Small Faith-Sharing Groups at St. Edward: Join, or let us help you form, a small faith-sharing group with other couples of the parish. Small groups help form long-lasting relationships and friends with people who share your faith and values. Please visit http://stedward.com/small-faith-sharinggroups-sign-up or call Liz Iorio at the Office of Faith Formation for information at (949) 496-6011. 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4

Visit http://www.retrouvaille.org/ World Marriage Day February 12 World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily, married life. Prayer for our Marriage Heavenly Father, we thank You for your tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Enable us to grow in our intimacy with You and with each other. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more one in heart, mind and body. Strengthen our communication with each other, and help us become living signs of your love. Help us to be examples of commitment, love and service to our families and children. Make us a sign of the unity which Jesus prays for at the Last Supper. We open ourselves to the guidance of your Holy Spirit, who empowers us to love in Jesus name and walk in His footsteps. Amen. Amen. PASTORAL SERVICES APPEAL 2017 This year s campaign is the PARISH and Pastoral Services Appeal. Every dollar raised above our PSA goal will help build up the care we provide through several ministries. I know that if each parishioner contributes according to his or her means we will raise over $500,000 this year. Our Diocesan goal is $238,000 leaving $262,000 to be distributed among our Parish Outreach Ministries. (Obria, St. Vincent de Paul, Habitat for Humanity, Family Assistance Ministries at San Felipe, Kids Around the World, Corazon, and Isaiah House) How to Help Prayer Our greatest contribution to last year s PSA was our commitment to pray for one or more of the people served through PSA. Please make the important commitment of prayer by taking the blue card in the Parish & PSA envelope, circling the ministry(ies) of your choice, place the card in the envelope, write your name on the envelope and submit it to the parish or mail it to OCF along with your pledge. All members of the family, especially the children, are invited to make this same important contribution and gift of prayer. Financial Offering How much should we give? C. S. Lewis said I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. Jesus himself offers some guidance saying, Where your treasure (money) is there also will be your heart (Mth 6:21). Let s put our treasure where our heart is: the poor. Please make your prayer and financial commitment by either completing and returning the pledge card or by going online to either Orangecatholicfoundation.org or ParishPay.com. Your pledge can be paid over several months or in one payment. If you pay by check, please write check payable to OCF (Orange Catholic Foundation). Please ask if your company will make a gift or match your donation. If it is not able to donate to a church, ask the company to make a donation to the Orange Catholic Foundation and write St. Edward the Confessor in the memo section. Who are the Knights of Columbus? As Grand Knight for our Council at St. Edward s, I d like to take a moment to answer this question for you. Aside from being a Catholic Fraternal organization founded in 1882 by Fr. Michael J. McGivney and an A++ rated Insurance Company with great member benefits, I thought I would talk about our Council and what we have done so far in support of Parish and school this year. Since our new Columbian Year started in July, here is a recap of some of the things we have accomplished: July We coordinated with the school and Parish on assembly and installation of the new lockers in the school. We were helped by a wonderful group of volunteers, and anyone else who could lend a hand, and were able to finish installation on time. August We partnered with the City of Dana Point and had a booth for the summer concert series at Heritage Park helping raise funds for our many charitable causes. We have hosted 2 Parish Red Cross Blood drives, and helped support the Parish Pennies from Heaven campaign raising $18,000 in support of Respect for Life. September We coordinated with the Parish Corazon House Build in Tijuana Mexico for a needy family, this was a great time and amazing to see everyone come together for this cause. October School Movie Night was another success this year which we helped support the school by hosting the BBQ and packaging the meals. Brother Knight Deacon Al also led a small team to a locally disabled person who needed a new wheelchair ramp built so he was able to safely enter/exit his home. November We volunteered in front of many local grocery stores to raise money for our annual Intellectual Disabilities Drive (Tootsie Roll Drive) raising $6,000 in support of Special Olympics and helping those with special needs. We also volunteered to help serve Thanksgiving dinner at FAM (Family Assistance Ministries) in San Clemente for about 400 local families. December We donated 70 lbs. worth of toys collected for children in need and delivered them to FAM. We also helped a widow move furniture when her home became flooded. March We will host a BBQ booth at the Dana Point Whale Festival in support our local community. We will also be having our annual St. Patrick s Dinner on March 18 th after the 5:30PM Mass, in Knight Hall. We are also helping St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Laguna Beach form their own Knights of Columbus council by starting a Round Table with them. I d like to thank all of our Knights on a fantastic job they have done so far this year. I appreciate each and every one of them. In Service To One, In Service To All Wow, we have been busy doing God s work coordinating to support our Parish and School and it won t stop there. There is so much more we can do. Please consider becoming a part of us by joining this great organization and giving back with your time and talents!! We would love to welcome you as a member of our Council. If this sounds like something you would like to do, or you would like more information, please stop by our table after Mass, or contact our Membership Director Brother Louis Ramirez at (949) 374-0498 louramirez@cox.net, or myself, Bill McAndrew at (949) 354-0225 wkmcandrew@cox.net 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 8

St. Matthew s Financial Corner ( Former Tax Collector & Patron Saint of Money / Feast Day Sept 21 st ) Turn Your TAXABLE RMD (Required Minimum Distributions) into Charitable Donations. IRS rules mandate that individuals age 70 1/2 and older take RMDs from their IRA each year, regardless of whether the income is needed. These annual withdrawals are subject to ordinary income taxes. By making a charitable contri-bution from your IRA, you can satisfy your RMD amount without reporting additional income. This provision may be especially attractive for retirees who don t need all the income from their IRA to meet current living expenses. By donating the money to your charity, you can enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to a worthy cause while effectively lowering your tax bill.
