Fellowship Bible Church WOMEN IN THE WORD Obedience: From the Heart of Love April 24, 2012 John 14:15(NASB) "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. (21,23) 1 John 2:3 (NKJV) Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. Rest on His faithfulness. Choose to obey and He will give you the power to perform; but He will not give you the power to perform until you make a choice to obey. Ray Stedman WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE FOR US---- Colossians 1:12-13 (NKJV) giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 1 Peter 1:18-19 (NKJV) knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. Ephesians 5:8;1 Peter 1:3; 2 Cor 5:14 OBEDIENCE BEGINS WITH CHOICES (to obey or not to obey) Choices determine what we are! Romans 6:16-18 WE ARE TO LIVE OUR LIFE WELL BY BRINGING GLORY TO GOD! Psalm 32:8 (NASB) I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. (Psalm 25:10) 1 Corinthians 6:20 (NKJV) For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. (Psalm 34:2-3) How we listen to God and His word, determines our response! obedience (hupakoe) action attentive hearkening compliance or submission; denotes to listen attentively; to heed or conform to a command or authority; hearken, be obedient to, to obey ; obedience (hupakouo) To listen to, to answer to submit to, to obey---- Obedience is submission, habitually yielding to authority. keep (phulasso) denotes to guard, watch, keep watch,

surrender to yield to the power, control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand; to give(oneself) up into the power of another; yield, relinquish John 3:30 (NASB) "He must increase, but I must decrease. Obedience is not forced upon us from God; it is motivated by a heart of love. Psa 40:8 (NIV) To do your will, O my God, is my desire, your law is within my heart. 1 John 5:3 (NKJV) For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. John 14:15 (NASB) "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. Our obedience is the evidence of our love for God. Our love for God results in our obedience. Our love for Jesus motivates us to obey Him, His word. Our obedience is a measure of our love for God. Obedience is action, not just emotion. John 14:21,23 DISOBEDIENCE IS SIN AND HARDENS OUR HEART AGAINST GOD----- disobedience the condition of being unpersuadable **denotes obstinacy, obstinate rejection of the will of God Being careless in our attitude towards God can be the prelude to actual disobedience. Titus 3:3; Hebrews 3:12-13 Examples--Eve--Gen 3:11;Lot s wife--gen 19:26; Moses--Num 20:11,12; Jonah--1:3 JESUS CHRIST-- OUR EXAMPLE! Hebrews 10:9 (NASB) then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will." He takes away the first in order to establish the second. John 4:34 (NKJV) Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. Romans 5:19 (NASB) For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. ABIDING-------John 15:10 --Obedience( is the key to abiding. God never stops loving us because we are disobedient to Him. HE DIED FOR US. Romans 5:8 JESUS MADE A CHOICE TO OBEY AND HE SUFFERED John 14:31;Matthew 26:39; Philippians 2:8;Hebrews 5:7-9 THE MEASURE OF OUR LOVE FOR CHRIST-- A HEART TO OBEY OR NOT. TRUST AND OBEY To the degree that you know God will be to the degree that you trust Him. Psalm 125:1; Proverbs 3:5,6; Isaiah 26:4;Isaiah 50:10 Psalm 37:5(NASB) Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.

Jerry Bridges Obeying the revealed will of God and trusting Him with the results. Regardless of the circumstances Psalm 40:6-8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart." JESUS TRUSTED and LOVED HIS HEAVENLY FATHER- Luke 23:46; 1 Peter4:19 1 Peter 2:23 (NASB) and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; Psalm 25:1; Psalm 56:3-4 Faith is of the heart, invisible to men; obedience is of the conduct and may be observed. When a man obeys God, he gives the only possible evidence that in his heart he believes God. It is persuasion of the truth that results in faith(we believe because we are persuaded that the thing is true, a thing does not become true because it is believed) Anonymous We fail to obey God s clearly revealed will because we do not exercise faith or because we are walking in the flesh. Hebrews 11:6 (NASB) And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. James 4:17; Galatians 5:16 (NKJV) I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Faith enables us to claim(believe) the promises of God, but it also enables us to obey the commands of God. Faith enables us to obey when obedience is costly or seems unreasonable to the natural mind. 1 Kings 8:56 BLESSINGS OF OBEDIENCE! It is in our best interest to obey God. God continually reminds us that we can obey Him through the power of His Holy Spirit. Obeying His commands have benefit and are not unreasonable(burdensome) The most difficult part in obeying His commands is the decision to not put off obeying Him, but choosing to begin without delay. Deuteronomy 5:29. that it might be well with them and with their children forever! Deuteronomy 10:12-13. which I command you today for your good? Proverbs 29:25. But he who trusts in the Lord will be exalted. Psalm 119:2 How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Psalm 111:7,8,10 (NLT) All he does is just and good, and all his commandments are trustworthy. 8 They are forever true, to be obeyed faithfully and with integrity 10 Fear of the LORDF is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom. James 1:25..this man will be blessed in what he does.

Obedience purifies our hearts.1 Peter 1:22 Obedience keeps us from practicing sin 1 John 3:6 (Ampl) No one who abides in Him{who lives and remains in communion with and in obedience to Him deliberately, knowingly and habitually} commits(practices) sin. Obedience results in peace--philippians 4:7; John 14:27;16:33 GOD IS ABLE! POWER OF GOD S HOLY SPIRIT ENABLES US TO OBEY. Galatians 5:16; John 14:16 ; Philippians 2:13;Ephesians 3:20; Hebrews 2:18; Jude 1:24 Our Lord never insists upon obedience; He tells us very emphatically what we ought to do, but He never takes means to make us do it. We have to obey Him out of a oneness of spirit.(with God). Oswald Chambers EXAMPLES OF OBEDIENCE Noah Gen. 6:22; Abraham Gen. 22:2; Joseph & Mary-- Luke 2:39; Jesus-- Heb 5:8 Obedience could be defined as willingly submitting to the process God has chosen for you to be conformed to the image of His Son. If you love Him, you will obey Him. Love solves our obedience problem. The very best proof of your love for your Lord is obedience-- nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. Chuck Swindoll APPLICATION.. 1) What is the most important thing that you learned from the teaching today? 2) What are you fearful of when you don t want to obey? Is it something that you think you have to: give up face have to do have to say

OR you fill in the blanks. 3)In regard to obedience to God, do you have just good intentions or sincere intentions? 4) Is there a time when you were obedient OR disobedient and you saw the blessing or the difficult consequence of your choice--- that you would be willing to share? 5)Is there an area in your life, where you know you need to be obedient to the Lord? Are you willing to be obedient--- demonstrating your love for God? 6) Remember- 1 John 1:9 (NASB) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If you [really] love Me, you will keep(obey) My commands. John 14:15 TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
