On Sunday, August 11, 2013, Council #13307 hosted the Annual Father McGivney Mass at St. Patrick s Church. This was a Tri-District affair with members and wives from the many Councils of Districts #48, #49 and #50 in attendance. A large contingent of the Color Corps was present including Sir Knights from Monsignor Elslander Assembly #0167, Our Lady of Charity Assembly #3089 and San Damiano Assembly #3192. The Color Corps Commander for the event was SK Bob Somers of the host Assembly, Our Lady of Charity #3089 assisted by the CCC of Assembly #0167, SK Sal Naimo. Sir Knights of the Color Corps line up in the Parish Hall prior to entering the Church. In the left front is SK Sal Naimo, CCC of Msgr. Elslander #0167 and on the right, SK Bob Somers, CCC of Our Lady of Charity #3089, and overall CCC for the event. The celebrant of the Mass was the Pastor of St. Patrick s Parish, Father Robert Dziedziak, who serves as the Chaplain of St. Patrick s Council and also serves as the Diocese of Venice Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus. He was assisted at Mass by Deacon Ray Lyons, also a member of St. Patrick s Council and who serves as Spiritual Advisor to the Council. Sir Knights of the Color Corps formed an Honor Guard at the entrance to the sanctuary of the Church as the many Knights, families and parishioners entered the Church for Sunday Mass. Father Robert Dziedziak There were an estimated 150 Knights and family members present in addition to the parishioners in attendance for this annual Mass to honor the founder of the Knights of Columbus. 2
Just prior to the start of Mass, Regional Director Bob Marrah read a synopsis of the life of the Venerable Father McGivney, recalling for all that he was taken home to the Lord just two days after achieving his 38 th year. Grand Knight Joe Reardon and his wife Sue brought up the gifts. Sue is hidden behind the GK in the picture. The Cross Bearer and acolytes are seen preceding the Knights of the Color Corps prior to the entrance of the Celebrant, Father Dziedziak. At the conclusion of the Mass, the Color Corps silently exit to form an Honor Guard for the Celebrant and all of the parishioners as they exit. With the Knights of the Color Corps at the command: Present Swords, the Deacon Raymond Lyons enters the sanctuary immediately followed by the celebrant, Father Dziedziak. The members of the Color Corps occupied the front two pews on either side of the center aisle of the Church for Mass. 3 The celebrant, deacon & servers exit
Multiple members of the Council served on the set-up crew, the cooking crew, the serving crew and the clean-up crew. The Celebrant Father Robert as he is affectionately known, is seen thanking the members of the Color Corps In celebration of the birth of our founder, Father McGivney, the host Council cooked and offered a free pancake, bacon, sausage, juice and coffee breakfast for the Knights and all the parishioners immediately following Mass. Members of the Council also served the parishioners from the prior Mass held at 7:30 AM. The breakfast crew was under the direction of Grand Knight Joe Reardon and John Smith, Council Advocate was the main Chef. State Council General Program Director Vinnie Cipriano is seen on the right of the picture thanking a Color Corps member for participating in the Mass. The line begins to form following Mass St. Patrick s Council has been busy! The previous Saturday, the Installation of Officers from seven Assemblies was held here and lunch was served to all following the ceremony! 4
Mr. & Mrs. John Christy of Council #7826, St. Thomas More, flank a friend and neighbor whom they brought to the Mass. In the center is Msgr. G. Thomas Burns, a retired priest from New Jersey who now lives in Sarasota. In discussions with the Monsignor, he mentioned to the editor that his grandmother was a sister of Father McGivney! Thus, he is a strong fan of the Knights! In addition, the Msgr. served as a Chaplain for a New Jersey Council for over 25 years!
