SAINT MARTIN OF TOURS ACADEMY April 1, 2018 PREPARING FOR EASTER Lent at SMA Kindergarten Mrs. Gonzalez Kindergarteners celebrated Lent by praying and trying to act as Jesus did. They discussed ways to care for others beginning with our families. Students are encouraged take this opportunity to care for each other and others in our community as a celebration of Lent. First Grade Mrs. Glick During Lent, the students kept a Lent Journal. The students combine the philosophy of the first grade patron saint, St. Therese of the Little Flower, and their Lenten promises. St. Therese was known for doing small acts of love in Jesus s name - something we reflect on each week in our class. In the Lent Journal, the children write down a small act of love that they did sometime during the day. Then they illustrate it. Third Grade Mrs. Hartley Throughout Lent we talked about Prayer, Almsgiving, and Abstaining, using language third graders can understand. The parish-wide outreach, the CRS Rice Bowl is the Almsgiving part of our Lenten journey. We watched videos about the countries and the people highlighted this year in the rice bowl project. We also studied Jesus passion and death during religion class and went over to church to pray the Stations of the Cross. Fifth Grade Mrs. Soto During the season of Lent, we discussed how to prepare ourselves as a spiritual practice. The guidance given to the students is to, do something that brings you closer in your relationship with God. The students have prepared their Lenten goals based on the following suggestions from the class: give up something special, do service work, pray more often and attend Mass more frequently. During Lent, the students focus on donating to their Rice Bowl the savings they have achieved based on their Lenten sacrifice. Eighth Grade Mrs. Pippin Beginning the first week of March the class began preparing for the Living Stations of The Cross. Students had the opportunity, literally, to walk with Christ during Lent, and re-enact for the whole school the last days of Jesus life, during Holy Week. May the peace & joy of the Easter season be with you always. St. Martin Academy Staff & Students Page 7
