page 5 Liturgical Corner Introductory Rites March 27, 2016: Easter Sunday The final element in the Introductory Rites is the Opening Prayer, or Collect, which has been part of the Mass possibly as early as the fifth century. Some of the prayers used for the Collect are ancient and can be traced to the time of Pope Leo I (fifth century) and earlier. As such, they enjoy great historical as well as theological merit. The GIRM describes the Collect as both revealing the theme for the liturgy and as a petition to God 1. It states: Next the priest invites the people to pray, and together they spend some moments in silence so they may realize that they are in God s presence and may make their petitions. The priest then says the prayer which is called the opening prayer or collect. This expresses the theme of the celebration and, by the words of the priest, a petition is addressed to God the Father through the mediation of Christ in the Holy Spirit. 2 The prayer, thus, attempts to unite the community and its prayer, and provides focus to the celebration. Ultimately, the celebration of the liturgy is about the Paschal Mystery, but this prayer helps the assembly to focus on certain aspects of that Mystery on particular feasts and the seasons of the year. It also brings together the prayer of the community, uniting it as one and offering up the united prayer to God 3. This brings to an end the Introductory Rites and may also be understood as a fitting preparation of the faithful to hear the proclamation of God s Word. 1 On the nature of the collect, Gerard Moore asserts: As a presidential prayer made up of an invitation, communal silence, oration and acclamation, the collect reflects the communitarian character of the Mass. Furthermore, it expresses the nature of Christian worship as an act of the united assembly offering praise and petition to God through the mediatory prayer of the priest. During particular seasons, the collect also functions to express the particular mystery being celebrated along with the attitude and disposition with which it is being celebrated. The Parish Family of Saint John the Evangelist, North Chelmsford, Massachusetts page 6 We all have very special From our Pastor! memories from our past that we can, at any moment, sort of bring ourselves back to. It might be something from our childhood, possibly a special birthday or a memorable Christmas. It might be the birth of a child or a wedding day. It could be that very first kiss, or the moment you knew that you loved someone enough to spend the rest of your life with that person. Or it could be the difficult moments, when we experienced some terrible loss or heartbreak through: illness, financial difficulties, a failed relationship, the death of a loved one, or a myriad of other possibilities. But those bittersweet moments, in hindsight, taught us something about our vulnerabilities, and also about our strength to persevere and grow and discover something about ourselves that needed to be revealed. We also have those particular moments and memories that transcend everything else and teach us in no uncertain terms about the person we are called to be. It is a moment that, in a sense, allows a part of us to die and then be transformed into the person we know we are supposed to be. Those memories are fewer, and sometimes, even when we look back on them, we cannot truly express what happened or fully articulate what it meant. It is only over time, by going back to the moment and contemplating it, that we can unpack its true meaning. Again, sometimes those moments can be extremely joy-filled, and at other times, they can be painful and bitter moments that only the passage of time helps us understand. In last week s column, I spoke about my Uncle Tony who has cerebral palsy, and I remember him talking once about the death of his mother. He adored his Mom, but when he spoke about her death, he always felt somewhat guilty. The guilt came from the fact that a part of him was happy she died because it was the first time in his life that he ever truly felt like an adult. My grandmother could only see his disability and so took care of all his needs, which inhibited his ability to fully develop as an adult. She acted out of love and wanting to protect him from any pain, and yet she made him feel inadequate and not capable of caring for himself. At the age of forty-six, he felt he had finally come into his own when he had to stand on his own two feet. I remember us talking about this and helping him to realize that it was okay to feel the way he did. It was not so much that he was happy she had died, but rather, it was about the freedom it gave him to grow and develop. It is important, from time to time, to stop and contemplate those moments in our lives that are so powerful and transformative. It helps us to remember where we once were and where we are now, because of that moment. It also can give us insight into what more it is that we need to do, and possibly what it is we need to let go of, to continue growing as the person we were created to be. Life is not a perfect continuum of unfettered understanding and growth. As human beings, we need the passage of time to understand and to mature, and with greater maturity comes deeper understanding and insight. In a real sense, that is what we celebrate on Easter. As we look back to the year 29 AD, we contemplate that a poor carpenter turned rabbi preached a message that heralded in a new age. It was not simply a message of love: it was something far different. It was a message that challenged the status quo. It was a message that challenged the comfortable. It was a message that challenged those whose lives were centered in self, deriving meaning only from their own personal wants or desires. It was a message that challenged the perception that life was simply about fulfilling some rules and regulations that would satisfy God. It was a message that challenged the notion that being good, based on one s own sense or a communal sense of goodness, was all it took to please God. It challenged the notion that my only concern should be for those I considered my own, whether it be family, friends or nation. It challenged the notion that we could think of any human as being different or unworthy; it challenged us to contemplate the radical notion that there are no borders, no classes, no races, but only human beings who are all our brothers and sisters. It challenged the notion that anyone can be self-satisfied or self-justified; however, in the eyes of God, we are all sinners who can only be justified by God s compassion and mercy. It challenged the notion that life is dependent on my working hard and accomplishing all that I want; rather, we are called to be wholly and completely dependent on God. The message that the poor carpenter preached was a radical call to humility, self-emptying, and dying to self. It was a message about true love, which always challenges. What we celebrate today is one of those particularly unique moments, or memories, of the past that changed our lives: Jesus died that we might live. Jesus died that we might understand the depth of God s love. Jesus died that we might discover who we really are, and realize that we can only discover our true nature and calling, in and through our relationship with God. It is only by dying to oneself that we can experience true resurrection. I pray that this Easter you may truly experience the depth of God s love for you, and contemplate its meaning in your life. page 7 From our St. Mary Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Courtney Callanan Among my earliest memories is kneeling with my parents learning my bedtime prayers on the first night I was allowed to sleep in my big girl bed. There was some discussion between them as to which version of Now I Lay Me we should use. My father was a proponent of the more traditional, Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. My mother was of the opinion that this version, with its mention of possible nighttime death, would frighten us (she was right) and advocated for the less grim ending,...when in the morning light I wake, show me the path of love to take. She eventually prevailed in this conversation and I think, even discounting possible bedtime fears, they made the right decision. I cannot imagine a more fitting description of the life in Christ that my parents shared with me, both in this memory and in many since, than When in the morning light I wake, show me the path of love to take. It is a nightly reminder that being a Christian is a daily choice: a choice to kind, to be faithful, to be generous, to be forgiving, to be loving...to be Christ-like. It is a choice that needs the guidance of the Lord if it is succeed. We cannot be like Christ if we do not know Christ- through prayer, through Scripture, through the Sacraments- and we must rely on Him to show us the path of love He has for us. Once after bedtime prayers, my sister and I compared what our paths looked like. Little me was surprised at how different her picture of the path of love was from mine. Today, of course, it only makes sense to me that our paths would not look exactly the same. We are unique creations of God, who calls us each to love in different ways. Older me finds it remarkable the surprisingly specific ways that these paths resembled each other. They were both paths through tunnels, whose ends you could not entirely see, but had a bright and beautiful light. This too, I think is fitting, as Christians we cannot wander whichever way, but must do our best to follow the path God has laid down for us, head towards the light that is Christ, and trust that He will lead us to Easter joy. March 27, 2016: Easter Sunday Of Cornerstones and Keystones... A cornerstone is the foundation Our Parochial Vicar, Fr. Ren piece in a large construction project, especially in ancient architecture when structures were built with stone blocks. It s the piece that s laid first, and the rest of the blocks are arranged to fit onto this stone. Psalm 118 declares the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; in the Gospels Jesus identifies this cornerstone as being Himself: the One Who the Pharisees rejected and scorned Who becomes the foundation of the Church and our faith. A keystone, on the other hand, is the last piece of a structure to be put into place. In an arch, the keystone is the wedge fixed in the center position which locks all the other wedges together and guarantees the arch s structural integrity. Both features cornerstones and keystones are architectural necessities. Easter is something of a keystone in our faith-life. It is the central celebration of the year, when we mark in a special and singular way the event of our Lord s rising from the dead. This is the anniversary of the greatest moment in human history, when God re-claimed us for the eternal life that we were always destined for, from the first entrance of mankind onto the stage of the universe. We celebrate this event today: the event that secures our lives together with the lives of the rest of our race, and with the saints in Heaven. It s the locking stone that gives our lives purpose and structural integrity. As the event of the Resurrection is the keystone of our humanity, our Easter celebration is the keystone of the year. Easter is the day that supports every other Sunday throughout the year. It gives form and stability to the calendar year. Just as architectural keystones have their place in context with the other wedges in an arch, so too does Easter Sunday find its fullest meaning as the centerpiece of our annual arch, with every Sunday fanning out from Easter over the course of the year. The amazing architectural feat of a stone arch finds its beauty in the arrangement of all the wedges; the exceptional character of Easter finds its perfect beauty in context with the rest of the Sundays of the year. And Sunday, in its turn, gives form, stability, and beauty to the rest of the week. In high school I used to roll my eyes at my friends who celebrated their two-week anniversary or one-month anniversary of dating their girlfriends. But as much of an overstatement as this might be when it comes to adolescent romance, it can add meaning and direction to our lives when applied to our celebration of Christ s Resurrection. The tower of our lives is built on the cornerstone that is Christ Himself; and the arch of each year is held together by the keystone of Easter Sunday, which joins our Sundays together in one form and guarantees our structural integrity as the People of God.
