PRE-CANA DAY Saturday, February 10, 2018 St. Charles Parish Activity Center Engaged couples preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage are welcome to participate. Please stop in the Parish Office and pick up a registration form. This is the Second Sunday of Advent. So Christmas is now only fifteen days away. This week we continue our consideration of the Mass. There is an insert in this bulletin entitled Nine Reasons for Going to Mass. Please read it over, discuss it, and perhaps pass it on to friends or family who might benefit from it. How about adding a few reasons of your own? As you know, I very rarely mention second collections. Oher than our Fifth Sunday St Vincent de Paul collections (four times per year) and when the missionary visits, usually in the summer, you do not hear much from me about second collections. You are intelligent people and you can choose the causes that are important to you. I make an exception, at this time of the year, for the Sisters Retirement Fund. Since 1924, our parish has been blessed with the dedication of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland. For almost a century, the Ursuline Sisters have enriched many ministries at St Charles, principally in education. Many of us have fond memories of the Good Sisters from a variety of religious orders at various parishes and institutions--as teachers, nurses, social workers, and a number of other roles. In former years, a large number of younger nuns supported their ill and elderly. In recent days, a lesser number of new vocations has changed the equation. Religious orders must now provide full-time nursing care for an increasing number of their members. With little thought for material reward, the Sisters did so much for us. In the 1950 s, the Sisters received fifty dollars per month as teachers and only from September to June. And that money went to the Order. So now it is our time to help them. Please do what you can next weekend, December 16-17; there will be a second collection for the Sisters Retirement Fund. Thank you to our Parish Council for hosting this Sunday morning s Donut Social in the Lower Parish Hall. Please stop by after the 8:00am or 10:00am Masses. At one time, St Charles scheduled Sunday Masses on the hour. Priority one was get out of the parking lot when the cars were parked bumper-to-bumper. In 1983, we moved to Masses on a ninety-minute schedule. Folks continued to move out quickly after Mass. We now offer Sunday morning Masses every two hours so there s plenty of time to stick around for parish socials Parents of second graders (First Communicants) and eighth graders (Confirmation candidates) are reminded of our final Parent Sacramental Talk, scheduled for this Monday, December 11, 7:00pm, in the Corrigan Gym. Parish Council members are reminded of this month s meeting, Thursday, December 14, 7:45pm in the JPII Room of the Parish Activities Center. Father Ryan will offer his next Pre-Cana installment this Friday, December 15. Check the bulletin article. Only one week to go with our 2017 Advent Giving Tree. There are wish lists on the church bulletin boards, or check the November 26 bulletin; purchase your gift and then place it before the Blessed Mother or Holy Family Shrines in church. All gifts will be collected, sorted, and delivered next Sunday, December 17, at 1:00pm Don t forget: please buy your weekly gas and groceries with St Charles Gift Cards. Also, do your regular shopping with our Gift Cards and give our Gift Cards as gifts, too! Many thanks! All proceeds help our kids.
