Dear parishioners and visitors of St. Mary and St. Anne, It is with great joy that together we celebrate the birthday of our baby Brother, Jesus Christ. Yes, Jesus is more than just our little Brother, but he is so just humble that we can t help but see him as part of our family. Just like having a new baby brother, which becomes the center of attention of the family; Jesus becomes the center of attention of our families. And, like any baby, whose fragility and innocence, opens and frees our hearts of all our cares and concerns, fears and worries; and replaces them with peace and joy; Jesus does the same, but so much more! Come Lord Jesus! Feliz Navidad, Padre Pedro Father Peter Mactutis / Padre Pedro Mactutis Pastor: Fr. FAITH FORMATION, DISCIPLESHIP, AND EVANGELIZATION Adult Formation Symbolon is our Adult Faith Formation/Enrichment program. This is for everyone, who wants to learn about and grow in the Catholic faith! Next class is January 4th! Interested in becoming Catholic, or know someone who is? Contact Michael Schmitz (see page 2) to get some of your questions answered and find out about the process and how we can make that happen! Quote of the Week Such a Birth, dearly Beloved, befitted Christ, the Power of God, and the Wisdom of God; whereby He would be both joined to our lowliness, yet remain far above us in His divinity. For unless He were true God, He could bring us no aid; and were He not true man, He could offer us no example. The exulting angels, therefore, sing to the new born Lord, Glory to God in the Highest, and they announce unto me, peace on earth to men of good will. For they see the heavenly Jerusalem made up from all peoples of the earth. With what joy may not the lowliness of mankind rejoice in this unspeakable work of the divine compassion, when the angels in their glory so greatly rejoice. Let us, therefore, give thanks, dearly Beloved, to God the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit; Who, because of the exceeding great love, wherein He has loved us, has had compassion on us. And even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together in Christ [Eph. 2:5], that in Him we might be a new creature, and a new clay. Let us strip ourselves of the old man with his deeds; for being made partakers of the Birth of Christ, let us renounce the deeds of the flesh [Col. 3:9]. -St. Leo the Great Youth Ministry Updates For updates and information about youth events, Like us on Facebook And visit our website at youth.stmary-stanne.org Learning and Practicing the Faith Q. What are the twelve days of Christmas? A. Liturgically the Christmas season doesn t begin until December 25th (because up until then we were observing Advent!). But there is another very important feast that follows Christmas the feast of Epiphany. While Christmas celebrates Christ s coming as a human being, on January 6th in the Western Church we celebrate the coming of the Magi, which represents the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles (those who are not Jewish), and thus his mission of salvation intended for all peoples. From Christmas to Epiphany happens to be twelve days. In 567 the Council of Tours desired that there be celebration during this entire time, and such celebrations spread throughout the Church. This is why there is a tradition of taking down Christmas decorations on January 6th (though before this tradition took hold they often were left up until February 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation 40 days after Christmas). Shakespeare s play Twelfth Night (a term meaning the Epiphany Eve), was written as entertainment for the celebration. Christian celebration is rarely limited to simply the first day, especially for the greatest feasts. This is why Christmas and Easter have what we call octaves, eight days of celebration where liturgically speaking, time stands still. For the eight days after Christmas, even though we celebrate certain saints, the Mass and Liturgy of the Hours texts are still basically that of Christmas Day. The idea is that one day is not enough to properly celebrate and to fruitfully meditate on the mystery being presented to us. When the rest of our culture tires of Christmas (and decorations and music disappear on the 26th), as Catholics we should just be getting started! All this is complicated today by the fact that in the US these days, Epiphany is always celebrated on a Sunday, instead of January 6th. This is unfortunate, since it breaks a number of cultural traditions throughout the Catholic world associated with January 6th. Teaching our Children Christmas is a perfect time to teach about the Incarnation, the central Christian truth that in Jesus Christ, God has taken on a human nature, which is what makes Jesus different than anyone else who has ever lived!
