IDAHO WALK TO EMMAUS El-Gallo Gazette February 2018 GREETINGS FROM THE INCOMING BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Emmaus Community, In 2017, IWTE held a single set of Winter Walks at Eagle United Methodist Church. We added 18 new pilgrims to our Community, and we are especially appreciative of the sponsors who made those weekends possible. We also extend our sincere thanks to our Lay Directors (Christy Pletcher and Matt Gager) for shepherding those Walks. Unfortunately, we were forced to cancel our Fall Walks in the East/Central due to a lack of pilgrims and a Men s Lay Director. As IWTE continues to move forward, we have some annual Board rotations to report for 2018. We would like to thank our outgoing members for their passion and service to this ministry: Sam Pile, Connie Pile, Paula Blair, Linda Villaseñor and Calvin Connell. Godspeed as you move onto other opportunities to serve as the hands and feet of Christ. We would also like to congratulate and welcome our incoming Board members: Barbra Young, Bill London, Mike Reed, Mike Kroenke and Steve Hamm. Thank you for saying yes when called by Christ to serve. Our biggest challenge in 2018 appears to be an ongoing need for pilgrims and volunteers. For those of you who are actively involved in IWTE, please know that we recognize how vital your role is in the success of this organization and we are truly grateful for your commitment. If you haven t sponsored a pilgrim, worked a weekend or helped fund this wonderful ministry in a while, I would like to personally hear from you what it would take to get you re-engaged with Idaho Walk to Emmaus. Please contact me at sh_hamm@msn.com or 208/447-8352. 2018 is a brand new year. Let s rise up as a Community and make a difference for Christ! De Colores! A letter from Lance Schmidt, Lay Director the Men's Walk: Dear Emmaus Comminity, Hello! My name is Lance Schmidt, and I have the distinct pleasure of serving as the Men s Lay Director for the quickly approaching Walk to Emmaus #66. Everything is coming together for this walk, because God is the one who is truly in charge. The teams that have been assembled are doing excellent work to ensure the pilgrims see all of us doing God s work, and not our own. I am excited to be working alongside all of those who have said yes to God s call to serve on this walk, and to see all the bright faces of those who show up for candle light and closing. DE COLORES!!! A letter from Lesli McGowan, Lay Director the Women's Walk: Praise be to God! He has so richly blessed these weekends; between the servant teams, conference room teams, incredibly gifted clergy folk, I can say without any reservation that God has been guiding EVERY STEP of the Spring 2018 Walk to Emmaus at Eagle United Methodist Church! He has called forth 21 ladies to attend as Pilgrims. It seems each day He adds to that number. I am completely in awe! Please consider coming early to Candlelight and helping to show some LOVE to our background servants with final clean up following the banquet. We will also need some extra hands on Sunday AM to re-set the church for Worship and Sunday School. Please prayerfully consider helping out! The more the hands the lighter the work! If you re unable to serve on one of the teams during the weekend, maybe you d be willing to serve in a different way? We have an online Prayer Vigil at: 3dayol.org We can ALWAYS utilize our communities assistance in this way. It s quite easy to sign up. In the address bar type in the website above> select Prayer Vigil Listings> scroll down to select Idaho Walk to Emmaus> select either the Men s 66 weekend or Women s 66 weekend and sign up for a time or times that you re willing to commit to. That s it! Continue to pray for the weekends and that Christ be the Head of all that we do. De Colores, Lesli McGowan

Team Selection As you pray for the upcoming Walks in Boise, please remember to pray for those volunteering their time during the weekend. As a member of the Idaho Walk to Emmaus, I have the privilege to serve on the Idaho Board as the Team Selection Chair. My responsibility is to support the creation of each team for the Walk weekends. According to the Upper Room Handbook on Emmaus, The purpose of Emmaus is to renew the church as the body of the risen Christ in the world through the renewal of Christians as faithful and committed disciples of Jesus Christ. Emmaus expands participant s spiritual lives, deepens their discipleship, and rekindles their gifts as Christian leaders in their churches and communities. To follow this model, the Team Selection uses the One-third rule and Progressive Servanthood to support the development of each team. The one-third rule allows team members to consist of one-third new members, one-third members who have worked before, and one-third veteran members. Progressive servanthood supports the idea of a progression of responsibilities. Members in the community gain valuable skills and knowledge to aid them in being more confident in taking on more responsibilities to support Emmaus. These ideas allow members not only to gain knowledge about the various rolls of Emmaus, but also gain confidence to expand their leadership in Emmaus and their own church. As the Team Selection chair, I encourage you to pray about how God can continue to use you to grow in your Christian walk. Contact me if you would like to expand your leadership roll in Emmaus. We encourage you to fill out an application to service on upcoming Emmaus weekends. We are always looking for members who are ready to be a coordinator of a weekend team, start the path to become a Lay Director, or become a Board member. Our Emmaus community is blessed to have you as a member, and we want to support you in your growth with our Lord. Dear Idaho Walk to Emmaus Community, Agape Letter Throughout the IWTE weekends, there are various types of agape you can provide to support the weekends. Community wall Agape: items given to the conference room which are posted on the walls Posters and letters addressed to the pilgrims as a group from other communities and reunion groups. Wall agape will begin to be presented in the conference room during the Justifying Grace talk on Friday afternoon, and will continue throughout the weekend. Table/Pillow Agape: Small gifts for dining tables, conference room tables or pillows Table agape distribution will begin at dinner on Friday and continue throughout the rest of the weekend at meals. Pillow agape distribution will begin Friday evening and continue throughout the rest of the weekend. Table/pillow agape is an expression of God's unconditional love; therefore personal names are not attached, although Reunion Group names are permissible. Agape and anonymous demonstrations of love serve to move the pilgrims closer to Christ, so their thanks and glory go to Him only. When providing table agape, please provide enough pieces for 40 people in the conference room. Pillow agape can be for pilgrims only - remember that we are no longer secretive about who pilgrims are and who are not. Personal Agape: Letters written specifically to the pilgrim 8-12 letters gathered by sponsors, written for each pilgrim by those in the pilgrim's life who are supportive of their spiritual journey. Remember that family members may not always be supportive, and therefore sponsors should be careful to get letters from those who will be positive and will commit to being a support system for the pilgrim's 4th day walk with Christ. It is the responsibility of the sponsor to bring the 8 to 12 letters in a bundle for their pilgrims. In order to assist sponsors in preparing bundle, it may be helpful to lightly mark in pencil on a corner of each envelope an S- for sister, H- husband, F- friend, P - pastor, etc., as letters come in. Once there are 8 to 12 letters erase markings and bundle (or place in baggie) and mark with pilgrim's name. Give any remaining personal letters to the Agape servants, marked for placement in Sunday "take home" bags for the pilgrim to read after returning home. Individual gifts for pilgrims must be delivered before or after the weekend, so that others don't feel left out. Prayer Agape: opportunities to pray during the weekend Prayer Chapel Agape: Pray for the speaker before, throughout, and after the talk or during the 72- Hour Prayer Vigil. For Community members to sign up (reminders will be sent to those praying outside of the weekend facility). Snack Agape: Fruit, cookies and refreshments available throughout the weekend. The Snack Assistant or Kitchen Coordinator will request community members sign up to bring snack items. Community members will be sent a reminder- with location and time to drop off snack items

Participation Agape: Attendance at Candlelight on Saturday night is a way to show God's presence, and by taking the time to come and pray communally over the pilgrims, partake in Holy Communion and be a witness to their once-in a lifetime event speaks volumes of the love and concern of the hands and feet of Christ. Attendance at Closing on Sunday is a way to show God's presence in numbers, to demonstrate the force of the love of the Community, and allows the opportunity for interaction and follow-up between pilgrims and community members. General thoughts about this agape... The Agape servants will organize areas where agape can be dropped off during Send-Off and throughout the weekend. They will prepare drop off boxes for wall, table/pillow and personal agape.to insure that agape is distributed, please have it to the Agape servants no later than noon Saturday. Note from The Treasurer I d like to offer a few comments in regard to the Walks that are sponsored by Emmaus. I am sure that everyone realizes that there is a cost to each weekend to pay for food for meals and snacks, (don t think anyone ever lost weight on a weekend), supplies for the Conference Room and background, materials for the Pilgrims, and facility costs. So, just how do these costs get covered. The primary method is that all workers and sponsors are asked to contribute $75 for the weekend to cover the costs. This works great if everyone steps up and submits their $75. Unfortunately, often times people are either not aware of this request or just don t get a round tuit. It is also very appropriate for anyone not participating directly in the weekend to make donations for the weekend. This helps cover sponsor costs for someone who is sponsoring multiple candidates or just cannot afford to provide the cost donation. Over the years the $75 amount has been arrived at and it really works best when we have more pilgrims at a Walk but we can cover the costs unless the kitchen crew goes too extravagant for the weekend. When we do not get enough donations we have to fund out of the general funds. This is troublesome as we really have no direct fund raising activities. Keep in mind that the Idaho Walk to Emmaus is a 501C3 organization. In English that means that your contributions to the Walk are tax deductible as an itemized deduction for income tax purposes. In fact, if you would like to contribute on a regular basis we can work with you to set-up and automatic withdrawal transfer directly to the Emmaus account each month. We need to be good financial stewards and we ask the help of all to accomplish that. Blessings, Carl Christensen Treasurer
