A Call to Service God calls us in many ways. Sometimes He may call out to us directly in a very miraculous way, such as when He called Moses to serve Him and His people via the burning bush. But more often, He calls us in very subtle ways. We feel a tug or a pull on our hearts that is irresistible. It is a call that we feel more within ourselves than with our own ears (although God can, and does speak to us in words!) God s voice is living, dynamic, and always calling out to us in many ways, whether it be through the words of sacred scripture, through our participation in the Liturgy, through our daily interactions with each other, or even at times in nature. But we must be willing to open ourselves to God and respond joyfully to His word. Just as the Blessed Virgin Mary willingly opened herself up to God s call without hesitation or reservation, so too must we. Because we are Catholic Christians, God s call demands that we not merely offer ourselves one hour a week for worship, but that we give ourselves wholly to Him and to each other. God s call of service demands that we love each other to the same degree that He loves us. Whether it be raising our children according to the faith and moral teachings of the Church, helping the infirm, feeding the poor, visiting the sick, or even at work in our jobs or relaxing on vacation, we must freely love each other with faith and fidelity. This is God s call to service, to serve Him and each other with love. - Fr Paul Makar Despite His Sin, the Spirit Was Still with the Son It was the same with the younger son who squandered his property and wasted his father s property living among prostitutes. Despite all this, he did not lose his honourable title of son. In the land of captivity, having rejected his father, he rather remembered, How many hired servants are at this moment in my father s house who have more than enough bread, but here am I perishing from hunger. He was still a sinner. He had sinned to such an extent that he had thrown to the winds with his misdeeds the entire inheritance he had received from his father. He still called God his father. This indicates that he grace of the Spirit, which authorizes him to call God Father, did not depart from him. We are unable to employ this term of address and call God Father, except through the authority of the Holy Spirit who is within us. It is well known that those who have not yet become God s children by the holy rebirth of baptism are not authorized to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name. The apparent reason for this is that the Holy Spirit is not yet within them to give them this authorization. It is well known to all that, when they approach the holy mysteries, they must do that with confidence in accordance with the tradition handed down by our Lord. Contact Zenon Scraba at 204-797-4862 Mar 6 Ukrainian Catholic Youth Lenten Retreat Days, 2:00 pm at Holy Family Parish, 1001 Grant Avenue The Prodigal Son The parable of the Prodigal Son has a deep symbolic meaning. W h e n w e p o n d e r i t, w e spontaneously perceive that the Prodigal Son is none other than every person who through a sinful life has become estranged from God. For this reason, the parable is very real to us: it is the story of our lives. It is a symbol of our infidelity to God. But it is also the symbol of God s unbounded mercy toward us. Today, as the world teems with prodigal sons and daughters this parable is dramatized in countless millions. Every person is either that older son who is ever faithful to his father or that younger son who only through hard and painful experience becomes convinced that outside the father s house there is no happiness. The parable teaches us that God forgives and mercifully receives even the greatest sinners, if they repent and are sorry for their sins. The history of the human race is nothing but the history of God s mercy. The mercy of the Lord is from eternity to eternity upon them that fear them. (Psalm 103,17) Julian J.
