THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS VOL. V WHY BE IN EARNEST? People about the church would be offended if they were told that they were not in earnest. Who wants to be charged with insincerity? The good church folk would be mortally offended, would probably resent it or demand an apology for such an indictment. At least it would be treated as unkind and with out foundation. However, when one weighs human lives and their endeavors by results, when church membership is put in the scales of eternal justice, when one reviews the yesterday by the standard of gain for Christ and the church, a human soul sobs alone as he sees gross indifference on every hand. Now this idea of being in earnest in our religion is perfectly legitimate and in every sense honorable, in fact, it is the only way to find happiness and enjoy the finer values of Christianity. If a man desires wealth, if he would accumulate money, there is one essential that over-rides all else, Be in earnest. I have known people who have fallen headlong in love, in fact, one never gets very far in that adventure unless he is in earnest. I have known people who were greatly interested in getting an education, but they were always in earnest. In religion man presumes much on God, many go along with the company, they are nominal cfturch members. Why pray be exercised? God is in His Heaven and all is well. A half-hearted, luke- STOW, O., FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 1938 NO. 24 warm, indifferent church member will never turn human souls to righteousness, he will never shine like the fetars forever and forever. It is a trait of the human soul to be active, alive, fired with spiritual joy, actuated to dare and do, strange and wonderful impulses urge and probe every God man that has been sincere in enlisting in the army of the Lord. Activity is a passion that refuses to be quieted when one is born of God. When a soul receives pardon and is released from the bondage of the adversary, then' is the spiritual life real and fraught with tremendous meaning. It is as though the fires banked are suddenly a heated flame. A force mighty and unseen possessed the soul. One must do or go, or speak, action is the only relief, a new and unerring power has taken command. Now, my church friend, why not be in earnest? If you are, the unseen current will sweep you on. No power on land or sea can retard its onward sweep. If you are not in earnest scornful winds will sweep across your earthly tomb and in far off years, too far to count, no one in eternity will ever rejoice because you once Sojourned on this earth. Friday night the members of the cast for the missionary play, "The- Harvest Abundant" will meet in the Tabernacle for practice. :, IN RETROSPECT Children's Day exercises held last Sunday evening were most pleasing. With a platform filled with little folks from the Primary Department, several from the Junior and Intermediate Departments, also the Orchestra, the flowers on the chancel rail all presented a pleasing and colorful picture. The orchestra with their new music, the little folks with their recitations, dialogues and special numbers, gave evidence of much work and practice on the part of those participating in the program. As Superintendent Biggs says full credit goes to Mrs. North as Superintendent of the Primary Department and other helpers for the extra effort and energy expended in getting up the splendid program. <s> SCOUTS Boy Scout Troop 167 of Stow Community Church took their first hike last Saturday afternoon. Starting from the church they hiked to the Cuyahoga River off River Road. Chief events of the afternoon were the taking on of ten gallons (more or less) of water at Norths and the passing by all scouts of the fire building and cooking tests. Scoutmaster Mosley reports that Marc Stockman turned out to be the best cook. Master Joe Ballis and Toby Mosley went along on this hike as mascots. On the return trip more water, ten gallons or so, was taken on at McColgans. < > THE REASON WHY Last weeks paper had only six pages. The preceeding issue only eight. This made some folks wonder why? Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas returned to her home in Canton, Ohio, last Monday after spending the preceding week visiting her daughter, Mrs. L. C. Stein, Thorndale road, Stow. While driving to school last Friday after report cards, brothers Jack and Roy Olson driving their grandfather's car,.., were sideswiped by another car at the schoolhouse corner. Roy was thrown from the car receiving a bump or two while Jack was uninjured. The car was a wreck. Dr. and Mrs. Joy G. Lichty of 167 Oak Road, Stow, entertained this last Tuesday everting with a picnic dinner in honor of Mr. and Mrs. N. R. Miller and family of Sidney, Australia. Mr. Miller is connected with the Goodyear Australian Plant and is now on triannual leave of absence visiting in this country. Attendance at Bible School last Sunday was two hundred sixteen. Mrs. Dunn's class won the banner. Birthdays celebrated were those of Mrs. Dunn, Earl Buck, Bob Stein and Wm. Lodge. Mr. Lodge remarked that for the last eighteen years he has celebrated his birthday in this way. The first year only forty-six cents were required. Now the figures are reversed. Last Sunday at the morning church services we were much pleased to listen to Mr. Cecil A. A. Rearick in two baritone solos. While Mr. Rearick's ambition runs toward operatic and concert work he certainly would be a most valuable addition in a musical way to any church. May he sing for us again.
