Welcome to the Church of St. Michael, Farmington From the Pastor ADVENT We begin the Church s new liturgical year with this Holy Season of Advent. I believe it is an urgent need in our society to reclaim this season from a threat which no one really seems to think all that great of a threat: what we might call the Christmas Being Celebrated Too Early phenomenon. Many of us might soly grouse about Christmas music being heard already, or extravagant light displays on houses, or aggressive adversements already saturang the media. There is lile we can do about those things, yet they should really make us upset. That emo- on can actually be a sign of our spiritual maturity. Anything that distracts or obscures the truth about Jesus, even if it seems harmless or wellintenoned, should give us reason to pause. We are to be serious about Jesus and the way he entered the world. Speaking for myself, the more I grow to love Jesus and deepen my prayer life, the more righteous anger I feel at such displays. I actually consider this anger to be a gi from God, and not a misplaced emoon. I am learning to convert the energy of that anger into an even greater love for the things of God, and for the Person of Jesus Christ. It is actually a gi to wait for the one we love. We mustn t deny ourselves that gi; insofar as we can avoid premature celebraons of Christmas, we should. For instance, I am grateful to our staff for celebrang an Advent Party instead of a premature Christmas party. Even Our Blessed Mother, who physically carried Jesus within her body, had to wait to actually see his face and hold him. Why would we not want to do the same? The phrase for the love of God is oen used as an idiomac expression, but here it really applies: For the love of God, do not celebrate Christmas early that is, not celebrang Christmas early is for the love of God. Remember that charity must always prevail: I do not mean to give us license to yell at people or go to Target and tear down their Christmas display like Jesus when he cleansed the Temple. Rather, let the righteous anger burn in your heart and fuel an even greater interior love for God. Seek to gently control the things that are in your control: the way the Season is celebrated in your home. The way your Navity set looks (only place Jesus in the Manger at Christmas, the Magi at Epiphany, etc.) Be an Apostle of Advent in the workplace or school, in a humble way. Be a witness to the worth of waing for Jesus! He is worth it! DECEMBER 8, IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Tuesday, December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concepon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is also the Patronal Feast Day of the United States of America. It is a day to rejoice in the way God chose to enter our world: through the humble, sinless, pure vessel who is our Blessed Mother. In 1854, Blessed Pope Pius IX infallibly taught that Mary was conceived in the womb of her mother St. Anne without Original Sin, by way of a special grace given to her by her son. It was the famous preempve strike of grace, in the words of Bishop Robert Barron. Catholics had long believed this truth about Mary, but the Pope explicitly defined it so that it would be held in even greater significance by the faithful. December 8 is a Holy Day of Obliga- on, meaning we must go to Mass on this day, or on the evening before. Like missing Mass on any other Sunday, to willfully miss Mass on this day without good reason (sickness, etc) is a mortal sin. Now, that is the Church s way of negavely expressing the importance of this feast. I want to have us focus on the posive: our atude should be something like We get to go to Mass today and celebrate Our Lady! We get to show our love for our Queen and her Son. What is beer than showing love for someone we truly love? Truly, it is one of my favorite feasts of the year, and this year especially, because it will mark the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy in the Church, called by Pope Francis to remind the Church of her mission of sharing the Mercy of Jesus, who is the Mercy of the Father, with the whole world par- cularly those who suffer. I aim to mark this special year in different ways within our St. Michael s community. Stay tuned for those. One of the ways to begin the Year of Mercy, as well as to prepare for the birth of Jesus, is to make a good confession. In fact, in his leer to the Church for the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has asked priests to make the Sacrament even more widely available. To that end, I will be adding addional mes for the Sacrament of Reconciliaon later in Advent. So I encourage you to be bold, be courageous, be excited about Jesus coming and get ahold of a good examinaon of conscience and lay your burdens down in the best place: at Jesus s feet in the confessional. Pope Francis would approve! AND FINALLY One more week unl Luke Spehar at St. Michael s. Keep spreading the word! See our website and Facebook page for more informaon. Yours in Christ, 2

November 29, 2015 4 Faith Formaon connued Advent Calendar Copies of an Advent calendar for children are available in the gathering space and outside of the parish office. Stop by and pick up a copy of this calendar, with a message from Fr. Lile on the back! Do You Know?! Who is the patron saint of archaeologists? Last week: Who is the patron saint of firefighters? St. Florian (visit our Walking with the Saints display in the classroom wing of the building) Pope Francis: In His Own Words Proof That God is Not With Him... Humility is what gives assurance that the Lord is there. When someone is selfsufficient, when he has all the answers to every queson, it is proof that God is not with him. (On Heaven and Earth: Pope Francis on Faith, Family, and the Church in the 21st Century) Reflecon: St Ignaus of Loyola once said, "Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you". Where is God calling you to trust more in him? Where is he calling you to work harder? Ask for the grace to live out this balance.
