Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Be holy, for I the Lord your God, am Holy (Lev 19:2). The people of God must take God as their model. He is loving and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in mercy. In his fidelity, he cares for those who cannot help themselves. The widow, the alien, the orphan are under his special protection (Exod 22:22; Deut 14:29). The people bound to him by covenant must also show their fidelity by caring for the powerless. All the detailed laws of the covenant lead back to this basic principle: the sole demand of God is love. Jesus says that the second commandment is like the first. In fact it is the manifestation of the first. If you love the Lord your God with your whole being, that love will show itself in the feeding of the hungry, the sheltering of the homeless, the release of the oppressed. Jesus, the supreme revelation of the Father s love (John 3:16), showed the depth of that love by giving his life for us when we were still powerless (Rom 5:6). The sign that we are his disciples is our love for one another (John 13:35). From the Pastor: Definition of "Politicalness" by Sheldon Wolin taken from The Presence of the Past, Essays on the State and the Constitution. Chapter Eight, Contract and Birthright. "By politicalness I mean our capacity for developing into beings who know and value what it means to participate in and be responsible for the care and improvement of our common and collective life. To be political is not identical with being a part of government or being associated with a political party. These are structured roles, and typically they are highly bureaucratized. For these reasons, they are opposed to the authentically political. GREETER MINISTRY Do you want to make a difference? Would you like to brighten someone s day? The Heart Behind the Words Whoever humbles himself like a child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:4 When you can t put your prayers into words, God hears your heart. God is grape. God is goo, intoned the little boy before mealtime. Over and over, his mom would stop him and explain the proper way to say the words in the blessing. But sure enough, before the next meal she would hear the boy s usual prayer. God is grape, God is goo. After a while, it finally dawned on this mom that God was probably amused. He may have even called the angels over to hear her son as he prayed. More than likely, God wasn t as concerned about him pronouncing the words correctly as He was that her son stopped long enough to thank God for the food He had provided. When we pray, we don t have to impress God. In fact, we can t impress God. All that matters is that we come to Him with childlike wonder and thanksgiving. Even if our words aren t impressive, the heart behind them moves God s heart. Lord, Thank You for the gift of coming to you in prayer, and Thank You that you delight in my feeble attempts. The Norbertine Community Letting Ourselves Become Still: A Meditative Writing Retreat with Meg Ashcroft, O.Praem.Obl., will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Commons at Santa Maria de la Vid (Norbertine) Abbey, 5825 Coors Blvd. SW, Abq. In a world of 24-hour news, constantly shifting trends and values, and unrelenting noise, it can be very challenging to become quiet enough to hear and see what is really going on. This meditative writing retreat offers an opportunity to listen to our inner life in particular, as well as to other voices of wisdom which may gift us with their presence. By allowing ourselves to become still, we can reconnect with our deepest desires and our authentic self so that we might live more wholehearted and peaceful lives. The offering for the retreat day is $55.00, which includes lunch. All are welcome to participate no writing experience is necessary! Please register by Monday, Oct. 30 by calling 505-873-4399, or emailing RSVP@norbertinecommunity.org.
