2 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Obsession with an end of the world is not alien to our times. We too fear cosmic upheavals and cataclysms of every sort. The means of nuclear catastrophe plays a significant part in this preoccupation. More than one recent author and several films have describes extreme events as if the end of the world were at the door. Every age has had doomsayers who announce the imminence of the parousia based on the wars and upheavals of the time. The possibility that Christians might be deceived by their predictions already disturbed Luke. He set out the alternate view of Christians vigilance. Although the destruction at the temple in the year 70 seemed to forbode the end of the world, the ruin of Jerusalem did not bring about the fulfillment of time. The necessary prelude to the catastrophes which will signal the end of time is the persecution of Jesus disciples. These persecutions will provide the opportunity for exercising that perseverance which alone obtains life, that constancy in faith which is necessary in any period of history. A Positive Bulletin Blurb Catholic Charities has been selected as the 2013 New Mexico Adult Education Outstanding Program of the Year. The criteria for the award is overall student success, data quality, program continued success and/or improvement year over year, innovation and community partnerships. This award is due to outstanding teaching and tutoring, dedication on the part of all staff and excellent student outreach and follow through by teachers and staff. Congratulations to Catholic Charities Center for Educational Opportunity. You are making a difference in our community - one student at a time! Typhoon Victims Fund Drive An estimated 11.3 million people in nine different districts of the Philippines have been affected by the deadly typhoon. People are in desperate need of food, shelter and water. The typhoon displaced 673,000 people. Half are taking shelter in centers, but 300,000 people are sleeping in the open as another typhoon approaches the Philippines. YOU CAN HELP. Please give a gift today. Help the Survivors, donate to Salt & Light Christ Foundation. Send your donations to St. Therese Parish c/o Ariel Bondoc. Deadline is November 24, Thank you for any donations and God Bless. Dear Parishioners, For a very brief period of time in 1978 the Catholic Church had a pope who actually spoke to people, rather that reading speeches to them. Pope John Paul I shocked officials in the Roman Curia when, during his 33 days in office, he routinely strayed from texts that these same officials prepared for him and spoke from the heart. In his very first address to the cardinals after the conclave, Papa Luciani stopped abruptly at the end of his prepared remarks. In the name of Christ and with the pledge of our paternal goodwill, we impart you he began before suddenly stopping. But we are all bishops; why am I giving you my blessing? he said. Then during the four general audiences he held before dying unexpectedly he would put down his papers and simply speak to those who had arrived hours earlier to await his arrival. At the most memorable of these gatherings he called forward a young boy and engaged him in a conversation to illustrate how God s love for us was like a mother s love for her children. It was very moving to witness this. But John Paul II and Benedict XVI did not adopt that colloquial style (which some said was too chatty ), at least not in the general audience format. Instead, they read their talks, much like professors, which were later assembled into a large body of documentation called the Pope s Magisterium. I ve thought about all this almost every Wednesday since Pope Francis has been holding general audiences. With a personality and delivery even more exuberant than that of John Paul I, we again have a Pope who is talking to and engaging people, rather than talking at them. Robert Mickens, The Tablet, 26 October, 2013 In 1983 on the airport tarmac in Managua, Nicaragua, the world had to witness Pope John Paul II publically scolding Father Ernesto Cardenal with the Pope s famous finger wagging gesture as the priest knelt in submission before the pontiff. Unfortunately for the Church, this attitude of finger wagging which was modeled by the Pope became ingrained in the psyche s of many a clergy member. Thank goodness as Robert Mickens writes that we again have a Pope who is talking to and engaging people, rather than talking at them. Thank You to our bulletin advertisers!
