Early sources present multiple texts for this berachah. Our edition of the gemara (Shabbat 23a) says that the berachah ends "ner shel Chanukah", but some contend that the original edition in that passage was just "ner Chanukah". Our edition of the Rambam says "shelchanukah" as one word, but other editions have it as "shel Chanukah", in two words. For reasons both mystical and rational, some authorities say to recite "ner Chanukah", and this is the practice in much of the Sephardic world. However, some Ashkenazic communities customarily say "ner shel Chanukah". People should retain their family customs, and consult Rabbi Korobkin if there is a need to institute a family custom. PARSHAS QUESTIONS VAYEISHEV BY: THE RAV First Aliyah: (37:1) Yaakov lived in the land (eretz) of his father, in the land (eretz) of Canaan why say eretz in this verse twice? Second Aliyah: (37:15 17) Yosef eventually finds his brothers in a place called Dosan; why does the Torah bother to tell me the story of how he got directions from a man (ish)? Third Aliyah: (37:25) Why is it relevant that the brothers sat down to eat bread after selling Yosef? Fourth Aliyah: How could the righteous Yehuda get mixed up with (what he thought was) a prostitute? Fifth Aliyah: Compare 38:1 with 39:1; why is it relevant that both Yehuda and Yosef went down, and what is the difference between their respective descents? Sixth Aliyah: (39:20) Wouldn t you think that adultery and/or rape was a capital offense in ancient Egypt why did they imprison Yosef instead of putting him to death? Seventh Aliyah: Where in their respective dreams did Yosef see that the wine steward would live and succeed while the baker would be executed? YOUNG PROFESSIONALS CORNER The Young Professionals Kiddush will take place this week, after the Rabbi is finished speaking, in the Moshe & Mania Gruda Bais Medrash on the first floor. Kiddush is sponsored by, Tzvi & Dali Fried, Choni & Aliza Fried & Chaim & Dena Pressman in memory of their beloved Granny Yetta. May her neshama have an Aliyah. CHANUKAH 5778 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who is obligated to light Chanukah candles? The Talmud s basic decree is for the head of the household to light on behalf of everyone in the house. Everyone in the house, in turn, must observe the candles being lit and hear the berachos. In practice, however, it is best for as many people in the house as possible to light Chanukah candles. This includes all children who are of age to appreciate the mitzvah of lighting candles. A married woman has the option of lighting her own candles (and saying the berachos) or including herself in her husband s lighting. What kind of Chanukah candles should I use? All oils and waxes may be used. It is best, however, to use olive oil, as the miracle of Chanukah involved olive oil. When is the preferred time to light Chanukah candles? During the Week: It is optimal to light as soon after Shekiah (sunset) as possible, provided that the candles are large enough / enough oil is used such that they will burn until no less than 30 minutes after Tzes HaKochavim (nightfall). If lighting at the optimal time is not possible, you can still light as long as people are out and about, either on the street or in your house. If you can not light until later than that, please consult with one of us. Friday Night: Before the Shabbos candles Motzei Shabbos: After Havdalah What is the earliest time to light Chanukah candles? During the Week & Friday Night: Plag HaMincha, provided that the candles are large enough /enough oil is used such that they will burn until no less than 30 mins. after Tzes Motzai Shabbos: After Havdalah Based on the above, what are the exact times for 2017/5778 in Thornhill? Night of Date Preferred Time Must Burn Until Night of Chanukah to Light Chanukah 1 st Night Tuesday Dec. 12 th 4:41 PM 5:56 PM 2 nd Night Wednesday Dec. 13 th 4:41 PM 5:56 PM 3 rd Night Thursday Dec. 14 th 4:41 PM 5:56 PM Date Preferred Time to Light Must Burn Until 5 th Night Motzai Shabbos Dec. 16 th After 5:27 PM 30 mins. after lighting 6 th Night Sunday Dec. 17 th 4:42 PM 5:57 PM 7 th Night Monday Dec.18 th 4:43 PM 5:58 PM 4 th Night Friday Dec. 15 th Before 4:23 PM 5:57 PM 8 th Night Tuesday Dec. 19 th 4:43 PM 5:58 PM What is the procedure for lighting? The established custom is to light Chanukah candles in a way that the Talmud calls the most beautiful of all mehadrin min hamehadrin whereby on the first night one lights one candle, and on each successive night an additional candle is added, the additional candle being lit first. By the eighth night, we light eight candles. Light the shamash first. While holding the shamash, recite the berachos (three on the first night and two on the remaining nights) in their entirety. Then begin lighting. On the first night, begin with a single candle in the rightmost position on the menorah. Each night, a candle is added to the left. The new candle is lit first. The lighting then proceeds to the right of the new candle. What should I do if the Chanukah lights go out? If they have been burning for less than 30 minutes after Tzes, relight them without a beracha (except on Friday night, when they can not be relit). If they have been burning for more than 30 minutes after Tzes, one may, but need not, relight them. Where is the best place to put my Menorah? By a window that is in view of the street, or at the very least, that is in view of an alley or courtyard where people walk. This maximizes Pirsumei Nissa (publicity of the miracle). If there is no window by which to place the menorah, it should be placed in an area of the house where it will be visible to members of the house. I am going out for dinner on Friday night. Where should I light? You must light in your house and spend a few minutes with the candles before leaving. If you are nervous to leave the candles near the window, you may light them in a safer place. I am going to a Chanukah party in the late afternoon and won t get home until late at night. Should I light before I leave, after I get home or at the party? You should not light at the Chanukah party, since you will be returning home to sleep. You have a few choices If you are leaving your house after Plag HaMincha, you can light the candles before leaving your house (see above). If you are leaving your house before Plag HaMincha OR are afraid to leave the candles unattended, you must do something (leave a note/set an alarm/ask someone to remind you) that will remind you to light Chanukah candles when you return home. I am going away for Shabbos Chanukah. Where should I light on Friday afternoon? If I am coming home on Motzei Shabbos, where should I light on Motzei Shabbos? On Friday afternoon, you should light at the house where you will be staying for Shabbos. You should either light your own menorah (with your own berachos) OR you should pay a few cents to the host and become partners with your host in the mitzvah. On Motzei Shabbos, you should light at the house where you stayed for Shabbos and then eat a meal there OR you should return home shortly after Shabbos and light at home. What do I do if I forget Al Hanissim? Al Hanissim is said in Shemoneh Esrei and Benching. One who omits Al Hanissim does not repeat Shemoneh Esrei or Benching. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any other questions. Happy Chanukah!
