While the Cream Eggs start appearing on Boxing Day, the church celebrates Christmas for 40 days, culminating in Candlemas on Friday 2 nd February when we commemorate the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. Part of the liturgy for Candlemas reminds us that this is a turning point in our calendar of worship. This is the point when we turn away from the Christmas story, the planting of the seed of our salvation, and turn towards the Cross, where that salvation comes to fruition. There is that short pause of so-called ordinary time after Candlemas, the Sundays many of us knew by their traditional names (Septuagesima, Sexagesima, Quinquagesima), before embarking on our 40 days of Lent. To complete the symmetry, Easter too is celebrated for 40 days, until the feast of the Ascension. None of this is accidental in the church s calendar. Whilst our secular world moves on rapidly after any event, looking always for the next marketing opportunity, we rightly emphasise the world-changing nature of both Christmas and Easter by carrying on the party for a full 40 days. And just as seeds sown in the garden need time to germinate and grow, we need time to allow the seed of the Incarnation at Christmas to grow in our lives to the Resurrection at Easter, with our 40 days of Lent providing time for personal growth as well as reflection. We can and should observe Lent both collectively and individually. There will be Lent lunches and study groups and prayer groups, as well as all the normal services in our churches. No-one can or should try to do everything, but most should be able to take on perhaps one particular personal commitment as part of our Lenten discipline, whether it be a weekday event in Church, or simply some additional reading, perhaps one of the recommended Lent books, or a particular book of the bible, read regularly during Lent. We shall again set up displays for Experience Easter, this year in St Benedict s, Horning, and hope to encourage our schoolchildren to take part this year, especially since they will still be at school during Holy Week, the culmination of our Lenten preparation for Easter. This is also another opportunity for you to join in as we shall need helpers to host the classes of schoolchildren who visit us. Let s make Lent, Holy Week, and Easter a really special time this year, both individually and together, encouraging one another, and growing together in the shared hope of the Easter message. The NIB Team Silent Bells Sadly, no-one heard the bells on Christmas Day at Barton for the nine lessons and carols service. The reason - a shortage of local ringers. The old tenor bell did, however, like Big Ben, chime 12 times to greet the New Year and a band of ringers from other churches rang a few celebratory call changes. The bells are often heard on Friday evenings, a practice night when ringers from other churches make up the numbers. But on Sundays those people are ringing for services at their own churches, and Barton bells stay silent. Sheila Yaxley 2018 Neatishead Calendar Our sincere thanks to those who bought the Neatishead calendar, to advertisers who supported our venture in turn, we ask everybody to support our loyal advertisers - to the photographers for their wonderful pictures of local scenes, and to the White House Stores and NVH for helping us to sell the calendars. About 400 has been raised for St Peter s Church this year. This is the end of a chapter so many thanks to everybody who has supported this project over the last eight years. Based on the average weight of the food boxes that are supplied this would be enough food to feed more than 14 local people who are in crisis, for 3 days. So thank you to everyone who helped to achieve this wonderful result, you certainly made all the 14 families have a Christmas they would not have had without your support. Gillian Jeckells Lent Lunches For one more year the door of Barn Cottage in Horning will be open from 12noon to 1.30pm each Friday in Lent, to welcome anyone who cares to come for a free lunch. On offer will be a simple meal of soup, a sandwich and a piece of fruit, and there will be absolutely no charge. St Michael and All Angels, Barton Turf Thanks go to all who took part in the Reverse Advent collection for the food bank and the clothes collection for St Martin s Housing Trust. The few items that we had left from the clothes collection went with Clive Gritten to Great Yarmouth on Christmas Day so everything that you donated went to a good home. As always the community came up trumps. It was great to see so many on Christmas morning and as a result of the retiring collection we will be able to send 224 to Alzheimer s Research. The school started Christmas off for us, with their Christmas concert and it was very good to have them with us again. Either at that concert or on Christmas morning someone lost a ring which we have found. If you are aware of losing a ring on either of those occasions could you please phone Lynne Wall on 01692 536479. It was found somewhere near the children s corner. May I thank all those who made the church look so wonderful over Christmas. Barbara Pilcher, Church Warden, 01692 536132 Neatishead Baptist Church It was good to welcome so many people to the Carol Service in December and from that and the collection on Christmas Day we were able to send 180 to Spurgeon s Children s Charity and 160 to Christian Aid. Sue Gibbons, Church Secretary Pat Atkinson, of the Vidyal Trust who work in Southern India, visited Neatishead Baptist Church in January and led the service the next day. It was fascinating to hear about the work (and enjoy good food!), 650 was raised with more to come. Funds so far will comfortably fund transport and extra treatment and medication for three more children with cancer for three years. Thank you to everyone who came and to Pat. Christine Moore The Preston Rooms, Ashmanhaugh The Christmas Thank you was a great opportunity to meet up with everyone over a mince pie and glass of mulled wine. We are hoping to complete the refurbishment by having the remaining windows replaced, along with the new radiators installed in 2017, the building will hopefully be warm and dry for future years. The committee will be putting together a calendar of events for 2018. This is always a challenge, and if anyone has a good idea for an event to raise a few pennies please let one of us know! Whilst it is cold and wintry, don t forget the regular clubs being held - Close Knit Knitting Group every Friday, 1-3pm or Gardening Group on Wednesday 28 th February, 1.30-3.30pm. Both groups are a great way to stay in touch over a cuppa. Sue Watts Neatishead CofE Primary School The school was excited to find itself in the local and national newspapers celebrating the wonderful results of our six Year 6 pupils who sat their KS2 National tests in May 2017. It doesn t get much better than 100% achieving the expected standard or above in Maths, Reading, Writing, Science, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. We were in third position in Norfolk on the league tables published in December 2017. Broadland High School are now benefiting from six very hard working and talented young people. It s not all reading, writing and arithmetic at Neatishead! Already this term they have begun exciting work as historians, geographers, scientists, artists, designers and more. Our future is in very good hands. Then take a look to discover what our older pupils got up to when they visited the Apple Store and Pizza Express to further their understanding of different industries. Music is something we truly celebrate at Neatishead. Our children will be taking part in the Big Sing at Carrow Road in May alongside 4000 other children. They are also part of an exciting project called CASMA where the children are learning to sing in Bangladeshi. They then perform at the OPEN in February. New Victory Hall News The New Victory Hall Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 26 th February at 7.30pm in the NVH. An election will be held for up to five Trustees as part of the proceedings. Shelagh Tyrell Farmers Market in the NVH Saturday 10 th February 9 until 12noon Winners of the December draw of the 200 Club: 50 R Docherty, 10 D Smith, 5 V Kendrick. And January - 50 K Calladine, 10 J Clay, 5 D Pritchard. The NVH Christmas Fair was a busy and pleasant morning which raised 1541 to help keep the NVH well maintained. Many thanks to all the user groups who ran stalls, to the visitors who came to buy, to the team serving teas and coffees and delicious bacon rolls and finally a great big thank you to NABS who sang and entertained us throughout the morning. Doreen Dean The BIG Community Breakfast held in January certainly was a BIG event as 164 people came together to have breakfast. The proceeds from the meal were 851.83 as most of the ingredients were generously donated by local firms and in addition donations to the collection buckets totalled 564.75 so with the matched funding from Barclays Bank, a grand total of 2,416.58 (subject to final audit) was raised for Cancer Research UK. It was a truly fantastic result. A great BIG thank you to all the volunteers who helped in so many ways, to all who came and had breakfast and to our generous sponsors. Well done all! Doreen Dean 4

Gardening Club We had a very enjoyable quiz evening for our December meeting and thanks go to Neville Khambatta for acting as the quiz master and to Roger for stepping in as scorer. Thanks also to all the members and friends who helped to clear the hall in record time! Our next meeting is on Monday 19 th February when Mr R Maidstone will be speaking about Wild Flowers in the Garden. Visitors and new members are always welcome to our meetings. Jane King, 01692 630002 Women s Institute We might not win the Man Booker prize, but we might win the Woman Cooker prize with our book containing favourite recipes submitted by our Members, which was released at our November Annual Meeting. Sally Church stood down as President, having served us well for 3 years, and Jo Macdougall has taken over. Our members are a generous lot and, after the annual reports had been read and cups presented, Sally handed a cheque for over 360 to Kim Lister of The Hamlet Centre, a Norwich-based charity. Horse meat didn t feature in our recipe book, which gladdened the heart of the pantomime horse that appeared with the old codgers in our skit on Old Uncle Tom Cobley at the WI Broadland Group Christmas Concert. Our Christmas lunch was enlivened by Pam Warren and Friends, who sang a medley of songs and recited poems. The competition for the best wrapped present for a patient in the Priscilla Bacon Lodge Hospice was won by Audrey Baillie: later in the week, Pat Young and Trish Percival took this and the other presents to the Lodge, as is our usual tradition. To help work off those extra calories, Jane Mitchell got a few of us and a couple of puddle-jumping dogs out and about on the New Year s Day walk around Barton. Monica Riley, 01692 630336 Friends and Neighbours Report The Club had its AGM at the NVH and all committee members kindly agreed to continue. We finished the meeting with a quiz, thanks to Doreen. We had a very interesting talk with slides, thanks to Geoff Best, on his holiday in Zimbabwe with his fiancé. The Club had their Christmas lunch at Rackheath Green Man, thanks to the committee for organising. We had a very nice Carol Service at the Baptist Church with lovely singing by the children of Neatishead School. We thank them very much also to the teachers and helpers for giving up their time to entertain us. Thanks also to the members and Pastor of the Baptist Church for allowing us to use their church. We would gladly welcome any new members to join us for our meetings, the second and fourth Thursday of each month. At the meeting on Wednesday 21 st February, 7.30pm in the Community Room at the NVH, we would like to invite anyone interested in finding out more about their relatives who served during WW1 or who would like to research any aspect of the villages history to come along. BroadBeat Choir In 2017 we raised around 2,000 for The Clare School in Norwich which will go towards their hydrotherapy pool. This year we will raise funds to support local people with Alzheimer s and Dementia, as well as their carers. We will work together with The Alzheimer s Society and also host our own social events such as sing-a-longs and tea & cake afternoons. Wildlife Notes The last two months seem to have been quite quiet on the bird front with few reports of wintering swans on the grazing marshes and no great numbers of visiting wildfowl or Short Eared Owls. Even the garden birds have been relatively low in numbers but I have been pleased to see a Brambling with the Chaffinches feeding under my bird table. A spell of hard, frosty weather could soon change that and would bring numbers of other species to our feeders in February. Ones to look out for include Siskins, a small yellowy coloured acrobatic finch with a forked tail, streaky on the front and back in the case of females but brighter and greener looking with a black crown in the case of males. Both sexes have a distinctive pale wing bar. They feed in flocks especially high up in pine and Alder trees and have a trilling, twittering call. If the icy conditions force them to leave coniferous forests they will visit gardens to feed on peanuts and sunflower hearts. Other species we may see include the Reed Bunting, usually feeding on seeds on the ground, and the Lesser Redpoll, another small, brown, streaky member of the finch family, which comes to feeders and is often in mixed flocks with Siskins. Redpolls have a small red crown (hence the name) and a small yellow bill and are very fond of birch seeds. Be warned that they are very easy to overlook when they are on your feeders. February is the time of year when we should think about putting up new bird nest boxes in our gardens so birds have a chance to get familiar with them before spring arrives. The BTO hold National Nest Box Week every year during this month with lots of advice about where to site boxes and what types to use (see the British Trust for Ornithology website). Another bird that is more likely to be noticed in your garden in the winter when there are no leaves on the trees is the Treecreeper. They walk up the sides of tree trunks always starting at the bottom and working upwards, poking their thin curved beaks into cracks and crevices trying to find small spiders and insects. Your local AmDram Company is pulling out all the stops for an all-encompassing variety show of song, dance, speech and drama. You will see familiar faces but, more importantly, the future face of NABS treading the boards for their first time. Who knows what talent spotters might be lurking and it would be encouraging for them, and the rest of us too, if we had a full house. Carol Horner In Memory of Daphne Hathaway November 1935 to November 2017 Daphne was a well-known and respected member of the community, having moved to Neatishead with her husband Andy when they retired to be near her father, Bill Booth. She was a member of Friends and Neighbours Club for many years and enjoyed their outings and holidays. Not one to sit still, Daphne was always keen to go the extra mile (quite literally) for her charities. Over the years she raised thousands of pounds for Alzheimer s Research and other well deserving causes, by running several marathons both at home and abroad. She would often be seen training, running around the village that she loved. She was honoured with carrying the Olympic Flame in 2012, and was cheered on by her many friends from the Coltishall Jaguars Running Club. Daphne very generously donated her torch to Neatishead Primary School. She will be fondly remembered for her tenacity and sense of humour, also her liking for a pint of real ale, in a mug with a handle. Daphne was one of life s characters, she will be sadly missed by those who knew her. Jeannie and Freddie Jones Daphne Hathaway I would like to thank everyone again for their support and kindness following the loss of my Mum, for attending the service to celebrate Mum's life and for those who generously made a donation in her memory to Alzheimer's Research UK.
