FATHER MAHER COUNCIL #648 SERVING THE PARISHES OF MOST HOLY REDEEMER SACRED HEART, SAINT MATTHEW S, AND SAINT PIUS V JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA DIOCESE OF SAINT AUGUSTINE Father Maher Council #648, Jacksonville, Florida 1902-2017 February, 2017 VOLUME NO. 6 Our 115th Year ISSUE 2 WWW.KOFC648.COM From the Grand Knight John Bowsman Brother Knights: The Knights of Columbus keep marching on! The Father Maher Council 648 was busy with several projects this January, including grading essays and recognizing the winners of the Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest. The theme was The Importance of Religious Freedom, and Ms. Brandi Peter s 7th and 8th grade English classes at Sacred Heart School participated with some very good essays. Ultimately, the following students were recognized for their excellent contributions: 1st place Christian Villanuerra 2nd Place Alyssa McNeal 3rd Place Stephanie Bernich The monthly after-mass pancake breakfast at St. Matthew's took place on the usual fourth Sunday. Although we were without a couple of our regulars, everyone picked up the slack and put on a good breakfast. The Flippers have the routine down pat now, and the event is enjoyable for both the parishioners and the Knights. Every January, our Really Big Event is the Basketball Free Throw Contest held at St. Matthew's Church. Brother Knights, Scott Shober and Frank Buban, did an excellent job of promoting, organizing and operating the event. Because of their excellent organizational skills, St. Matthew's was also selected as the site for the District and Regional finals which were held January 29, 2017. The Regional winners will be competing in the State Finals in Clermont, FL. The local students who placed in the Regional were: Lauren Meldoon, Dan Footman, Michael Meldoon, Elizabeth Trumble and Emily Measday. Congratulations to all! Because of their great work on guiding the Basketball Free Throw program, Brothers, Scott Shober and Frank Buban, are our deserving Knights of the Month! We greatly appreciate their service and dedication. The Annual Boy Scout Breakfast will take place at St. Matthew's Church after the 8:30 Mass, this Sunday, February 5th. Brother Jerry Lusco is the planner and facilitator for this event that recognizes outstanding individuals in the Scouting Program. This event is for both the Scouts and their families. We all strongly support our local parish Boy Scouts and thank Jerry for his thorough planning Continued >

Brother Gary Neill will need all of our prayers as he is having surgery this week. Please offer prayers for Gary, Kim and their family who are such good stewards of their time, talent and treasure for the good of the Church. A few reminders for us to consider: First, we all need to check on our certification for Protecting God s Children. I know many of you have completed the course and should make sure you are on the list. Secondly, be sure to put the Eucharistic Congress on your calendars for March 24 th and 25 th. This is always a wonderful spiritual event a special time before Easter to learn more about your faith and to appreciate the wonderful gift of the Eucharist which we are so privileged to participate in as Catholics. There will be many great speakers this year, including Fr. Andrew Apostoli, Dr. Edward Sri and Fr Michael Gaitley, as well as Keynote Speakers: Archbishop Christopher Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States and Helen Alvare, Advisor to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Finally, we are reminded by the Magnificat missal that this month, the Church will commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the World Day of the Sick. The annual occasion is to be, as Pope Saint John Paul II stated in his 1992 letter instituting the day, 'a special time of reminding everyone to see in his sick brother or sister the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying and rising, achieved the salvation of mankind.'... Pope Francis also encourages us that 'time spent with the sick is holy time. It is a way of praising God who conforms us to the image of his Son.' To quote Saint John Paul II: 'It is in care for the sick more than in any other way that love is made concrete and a witness of hope in the Resurrection is offered.' And, as we all well know, it is also one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy, something the Lord would like us to do on a regular basis, for the good of our souls. All have a super February and be good to your Valentines! Together in Faith and Fraternity, John

All that is reliably known of the saint commemorated on February 14 is his name and that he was martyred and buried at a cemetery on the Via Flamina close to the Ponte Milvio to the north of Rome on that day. It is uncertain whether St. Valentine is to be identified as one saint or the conflation of two saints of the same name.
