A NEW PRIEST I am pleased to announce that the Priest Placement Board has asked St. Mary to be the first assignment for a new priest of our archdiocese. Deacon Michael Grzesik is presently completing his studies at Mundelein Seminary and will begin assisting us as a transitional deacon on March 8. He will be ordained a Catholic priest by Archbishop Cupich on May 16 and then begin serving here as a full-time associate pastor on July 1. The selection of a parish for the first assignment of a new priest is an important decision. The Placement Board looks for a parish that is a good fit for the new priest. Recognizing the need for priests across the Archdiocese of Chicago, Father Ron Stake, who has been with us in a part-time capacity since July, will be reassigned to a different parish at the end of June. I am very grateful for the help he has given very generously over this year. Father Brendan Guilfoil will continue as our Associate Pastor along with the newly ordained Father Grzesik. St. Mary has been blest with many good priests who have served here. I hope that we will continue to encourage the young men of our parish to listen for the Lord's call to serve His people in the priesthood. BLESSING OF EXPECTANT MOTHERS The Church has a beautiful blessing for expectant mothers that I have offered for women on request. It recently occurred to me that it would be very good to offer this blessing on a regular basis (perhaps quarterly) after a Sunday Mass. With that in mind, I invite women who are pregnant and would like to receive the blessing to come to church on March 22; the blessing will be offered in the sanctuary after the 9:00am and 10:30am liturgies. The reason I selected March 22 is that it is the Sunday just before the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25) on which the Church celebrates the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. God sent the Angel Gabriel to Mary to announce God's plan for Mary to be the Mother of Jesus. It seemed fitting to connect the blessing with the feast. If you have any questions, please call Ellyn von Huben at 847.234.0205. BLESS ME FATHER, FOR I HAVE SINNED During Lent, we have added some opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In addition to Saturday mornings at 8:30am, there are additional times added in March and April. If it has been years since you confessed your sins to a priest, don't hesitate to go because you don't remember the mechanics or the Act of Contrition; simply tell the priest that you need help and he will guide you through the sacrament. Remember that no sin is so large that God will not forgive us if we are truly sorry and ask God for forgiveness. Make this Lent the best ever by meeting the Lord through making a good confession. EASTERN EUROPE There are many "second collections" at our parish during the course of the year. On March 15 we have a collection that deserves a special note: the Collection for the Church in Eastern Europe. We can read daily about the difficulties and uncertainties in the Ukraine and wonder how we can help the people who are struggling. This second collection provides for material support for the work of the Church in places like Ukraine, Hungary and Lithuania. Please help the light of Christ keep burning in Eastern Europe by supporting the collection. THE MEANING OF THE CROSS This Thursday evening, March 12, Fr. Francis Hoffman will celebrate the 7:00pm Mass. He will then speak on The Meaning of The Cross in the Life of a Christian. Father Hoffman is well known for his preaching and for his work with Relevant Radio. Please join us. SCHOOL OF ST. MARY GALA The School of St. Mary celebrates their 43rd Annual Gala on Saturday, March 14. Thank You to the School of St. Mary Parents' Association Co-Presidents, Gala Co-Chairs, and to all committee members, donors and friends of the School of St. Mary for their support of this festive evening which is such a great benefit to our school. In Our Lord, Father Mike McGovern mmcgovern@archchicago.org Pastor s Notes

Hello St. Mary s! My name is Deacon Michael Grzesik. I am currently in my final semester at Mundelein Seminary and will be ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 16, 2015. I am so happy to be invited to serve as a newly ordained priest at St. Mary s and to become a part of your parish family! As you can tell from my photo, I m an older vocation. I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, but eventually moved to Chicago to finish college, where I have many relatives. I also have a strong Irish and polish heritage from my grandparents who migrated to this great country. Before I entered the seminary, I had my own business organizing religious pilgrimages to Catholic Shrines around the world. Now, you might ask, Were you always thinking about priesthood growing up? The answer is simply, not really. Even though my parents laid down a very good foundation for my Catholic roots growing up, I spent a few years away from the Catholic Church. I was always searching for that missing piece of the puzzle in life to make me happy. Ultimately, I ended up graduating from the school of hard knocks! I later came to realize that the missing piece in my life was God. The spark that really jumpstarted my faith and return to the Catholic Church was Our Blessed Mother. Ever so gently, Our Lady led me back to her Son saying, Do whatever He tells you. I thank God every day for that grace! Over time, I began to feel a tug on my heart to give my life over to Christ. And, as scary as that sounds, I felt a deep sense of peace about answering the call. Although my vocation to the priesthood has taken many twists and turns over the years, one thing I ve come to realize is the hound of heaven is very persistent. I hope and pray that the Lord will use me as a small instrument in His hands to bring souls closer to Him. I look forward to working and praying with the St. Mary community over the next few weeks as I prepare for priesthood. Please know that you will be in my daily prayers and I ask the same of you as I get closer to ordination! God s Blessings, Deacon Michael Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe Dear Father McGovern and Parishioners of St. Mary, Welcome to St. Mary, Fr. Michael Grzesik Each year, countless Catholics living in countries once dominated by the Soviet regime are assisted in rebuilding their faith communities through the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. In Bucharest, Romania, the Collection is funding a repair of the New Home Centre, run by the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart. The Centre provides a home for abandoned children, offering them nursery care and preschool education. However, the sisters building was poorly insulated and overcrowded. The repair and expansion project will provide living quarters for children and a separate kindergarten, ensuring that the children live in a safe and welcoming environment. Approximately 40,000 Ukrainians die each year from alcoholism, a remnant of the hopelessness fostered by generations of communist oppression. In response to this tragic predicament, Fr. Andriy Lohin founded four centers to care for those struggling with alcohol addiction and their families. This dynamic priest designed the centers to provide for the physical and spiritual welfare of those suffering the consequences of alcoholism. The centers focus on direct counseling and spiritual therapy, as well as educational outreach to rural villages. Thus far, the program has reached 15,000 people; therapists have conducted more than 350 consultations and visited over 150 villages. The Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe helps to fund Fr. Lohin s travel, amounting to 19,000 miles per year over poorly maintained roads, so that he can visit and supervise the centers. Our continued support of Fr. Lohin s visits will allow the centers to remain open and continue their mission of outreach and support for the Ukrainian people. Thank you for support and for helping to restore the Church and build the future in the region. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Rev. Blase J. Cupich Chairman, Subcommittee on Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe

Each week students are learning about a different country and the people their contributions will help. For the months of March and April, classes are focusing on the virtue of service and Operation Rice Bowl provides an excellent opportunity for students to serve others.
