Ascension of the Lord May 28, 2017 Readings: Acts 1:1-11; Eph 1:17-23; Mt 28:16-20 The Deacon s Speakin Dear friends, Pentecost is more than celebrating the birthday of the church it celebrates our birth into risen Life and being sent out armed with peace and to forgive others. We can speak of a birthday of the Church (the Church being the Body of Christ), only when we make the church a reality through forgiveness of one another. Then every day is a birthday a birthing of the risen Life of Christ in each other. Forgiveness is the Church s CPR. Forgiveness is sometimes the most difficult thing we have to do. There are so many simple acts in our everyday living that demand we seek and give forgiveness. This is why Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to empower us, through the common risen Life we share, to forgive, to heal divisions in the Community, to be peacemakers. We overcome our fears and unlock the doors of our closed relationships when we reach out to others in forgiveness. Nationally known speaker and Vatican II scholar, Bill Huebsch paraphrases the writings of Pope Francis In a parish of mercy and accompaniment, leaders offer a welcome and outstretched hand to everyone who join in the assembly for liturgy, including many of those who do not feel welcome there now. Mr. Huebsch, in his pamphlet, The Art of Accompaniment, quotes the Holy Father: No one can be condemned forever, because that is not the logic of the Gospel. (The Joy of Love, 297) The way of the Church is not to condemn anyone forever; it is to pour out the balm of God s mercy on all those who ask for it with a sincere heart. Peace and Love Mission Statement Gifted by God, called by Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, St. Paul Catholic Newman Center is a parish committed to serving the academic community and all those who choose to be part of our parish family. We dedicate ourselves to bringing the transformative power of Christ to the world through word and action.

May the Lord bless their priestly ministry for the people of God in our diocese. SPCNC Prison Ministry Save those hotel-size bottles of shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc.! In partnership with Wesley United Methodist Church, these items are collected in a small gray bin in the foyer near the water fountain here. At Christmastime these items are packaged as gifts to women prisoners at Chowchilla. These women are always so grateful that someone has remembered them--for some this is the only Christmas gift they receive. Acceptable items include: wrapped toothbrushes, new sample-sized toiletries and toothpaste, lip gloss and packets of greeting cards. Your contributions are appreciated! When the bin is full throughout the year, we send it over to Wesley. When the bin is gone, you may take items directly over to Wesley Church, across Barstow Ave., about ½ mile west of the Newman Center. Godspeed to Our Jesuits With gratitude and prayers, we bid farewell to the Jesuit community that has resided in our diocese since 2005. The three remaining priests, Fathers James Rude, James Gallas and James Torrens, will be departing during the next few weeks. Father Torrens, the Superior of this community, will be the last to leave late in June. Fathers Gallas and Rude will leave by the end of this month. Having served well and faithfully in several parishes and other ministries, and some even having served here in prior years, the Society of Jesus has made valuable contributions to the faith life of this diocese. They will be missed and remain in our thankful prayers as they go to Jesuit residences up north. Their current mailing address is at our diocesan Pastoral Center: Jesuit Community, 1550 N. Fresno Street, Fresno, CA 93703. Altar Flowers The flowers on the altar this weekend are in memory of John and Rose Barretto. Office Closed Our parish office will be closed on Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day. Mass will be at 8:00am. On Thursday and Friday, June 1 and 2. Our staff will be away on retreat those days. Please keep them in your prayers and they will remember all parishioners in prayer in these days of renewal and prayer. Fresno Catholic Singles Fresno Catholic Singles is having a general meeting and potluck on Thursday, June 1 at 6:30pm in the Cafeteria. Welcome, Singers! Do you like to sing?
