Naoma Oma Smith Burial: Both Buried: Hugh Wallace Cemetery, TN yrs. (The father of Hugh Wallace that married Nancy Jared was up for debate). Robert Wallace (my 1 st choice) or William Hugh Wallace & Frances. After studying the census I would come to the conclusion that Robert Wallace was the father of Hugh Wallace that md Nancy Jared. I believe Robert Wallace lived in North Carolina and that is where Hugh Wallace was born. Robert Wallace then came to Tennessee and settled with his family. Another relative said that Hugh Wallace s parents were: Peter Wallace & Martha Wood, this lead did not work out as Peter and Martha/Margaret would have been too old to be Hugh s parents. Hugh Wallace was the brother of Abe Wallace who md Martha & Joe Wallace. His brothers, Abe & Joe, could be buried on the Homestead property, Silver Point, TN. Hugh Wallace settled not far from Silver Point with his family about 1820. Family history has it that Hugh Wallace was Scotch and came walking over the mountains with an ax and gun over his shoulder and settled the land. He died owning a great deal of property. His homestead was in the 13 th District of Putnam Co., TN. Hugh is shown in the 1850 US census, Jackson Co., TN as living in the 12 th District as a farmer. In 1860 the family was living in the 13 Dist., TN. The 13th Putnam Co., Dist. was called Laurel Hill in the Silver Point, Buffalo Valley area at one time. Buffalo Valley became Dist. 9, & Silver Pt., Dist. 11. *See Story - Hugh Wallace Family Stray Leaves pg. 223. Little Billy Wallace, s/o McDonald Wallace & Juliann Julia Ann Henley. Little Billy never married.) ORIGIN OF THE NAME HUGH English: of Germanic origin, brought to Britain by the Normans. It is derived from the element hug heart, mind, and spirit. Originally, the name was a short form of various compound names containing this element. Little Hugh of Lincoln was a child supposed in the Middle Ages to have been murdered by Jews in about 1255, a legend responsible for several outbursts of anti-semitism at various times. The story is referred to by Chaucer in The Prioress's Tale. He is not to be confused with St Hugh of Lincoln (1140 1200), bishop of Lincoln (1186 1200), who was noted for his charity and good works, his piety, and his defence of the Church against the State. In Scotland and Ireland this has been used as an Anglicized form of the Gaelic names Aodh, Ùisdean, and sometimes Eóghan. Variant: Hugo (Latinized; also used in Dutch and German).Cognates: French: Hugues. Italian: Ugo. Welsh: Huw.Feminine form: Scottish: Hughina. ORIGIN OF THE NAME WALLACE Scots, Irish, and English: name for a Celt, from ANF waleis (from a Gmc cogn. of OE wealh foreign). In different parts of Britain this term was used to denote variously Scotsmen, Welshmen, and Bretons, as well as the small pocket of Strathclyde Britons who persisted into the Middle Ages. English placenames containing wealh (as for example Walcot, Walden, Walford, and Wallington) are believed to refer to enclaves of Welsh-speaking people noted by the Anglo-Saxons. The surname has also been adopted in the 19th and 20th cents. as an Anglicized form of various Ashkenazic Jewish surnames. JACKSON CO. Wallace Family Stray Leaves from Putnam County History By Mary Hopson - Pgs. 223 & 224 The Wallaces were landowners in an area that stretched from Buffalo Valley to the waters of Indian Creek to land that later became the 13 th Civil District of Putnam County. State records show that Hugh Wallace in consideration of the sum of one cent per acre on the 2 nd day of January 1826 pursuant to the provisions of an act of the General Assembly was granted 50 acres of land. The grant was signed by Sam Houston. Four years later by virtue of Entry No. 2172 Hugh Wallace was granted 400 acres of land on the waters of the Buffalo Valley and waters of Indian Creek area. This grant was signed by the Governor of Tennessee N. Cannon. Bordering this land was property owned by Robert Alcorn, Prettyman Jones, John Jones, and Robert Wallis (Wallace). Another tract of land that contained 100 acres on the waters of Indian Creek of Caney Fork, and still another grant of 75 acres on the Ridge between the head of Buffalo Valley and Wolf Creek waters of Caney Fork was made to Hugh Wallace. The surveys for the land tracts were done by Richard F. Cooke. The Insurrection Tax list of 1862 shows Hugh Wallace owned 790 acres of land.

Hugh Wallace married Nancy Jared about 1822. She was the daughter of Joseph Jared and Agnes Beard. Nancy was born in Virginia. (Both of these men signed the 1841 Petition for the Creation of a New County-Putnam). The Census records show they were the parents of William J. Wallace, McDonald Wallace, Elizabeth Wallace, Joseph Josiah Wallace, Matilda Wallace, and John A. Wallace. By 1845 William J. was married to Elizabeth Ann Petty. They were the parents of Adelaid Wallace, Amanda Wallace, Hugh E. Wallace, John L. Wallace, Robert M. Wallace, James Wade Wallace, Earl M. Wallace, Sarah Caroline Wallace, and Joel L. Whitten Wallace. William J. Wallace was elected Justice of the Peace. A marriage between B.F. Whitefield and Mary Barr was performed by him on May 21, 1882. He was deeded land by his father, Hugh, who divided land holdings among his children, giving each more than 100 acres. William J. deeded some of the land to his daughter Adelaid, who married Mansfield Smith, Sr. She in turn deeded her land to her three sons Mansfield Smith, Jr., Robert Smith, and James Smith. That land today is still in the hands of descendants of these families. The will of William J. Wallace was dated January 27, 1894. Court records show that Elizabeth Ann, his widow, was appointed Executrix as he stipulated on April 8, 1895. Courtesy Lois Anderson. Watson, 406 Piedmont Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 1974 Introduction: Several criteria were used in selecting the deeds to be included in this book. The most important was to include all deeds proving or indicating relationships. Another was to select all deeds in which either the grantor or grantee, or both, lived in another county. This could indicated the counties from which people emigrated or to which they removed, many to other states. Also included are deeds in which both the grantor and grantee had the same surname. While this does not necessarily mean that they were related, it is a likely place to begin searching.

In many cases people sold land to their relatives in order to keep a tract from being divided. And there were many deeds of gift in which a normal price was stated. Since it was necessary to have a consideration named for the land or personal property, a high price would certainly make the gift seem more attractive. Granville County has been found to be quire different from some other eastern North Carolina counties, namely, Edgecombe, Nash, and Halifax, in on respect. There were a very large number of merchants in Granville County from its beginning and they bought and resold quite a bit of the lands. They were noted, to a great extent, buying land at Sheriffs sales and buying from persons who removed to other states. This also applied to the buying of slaves for resale. In the other counties mentioned, the merchants had very little to do with the buying and selling of land and personal property. Another difference between Granville and the above named counties is that the boundaries of Granville County at that time were mostly artificial and many tracts of land lay in two counties and quite often in two states. Many persons who inherited part of a home tract found that their part, when divided, lay in another county. So there were a great many of these border line sales and others by people living in a county which as actually only a few yards away. All of the deeds in this book were abstracted by the late Zae Hargett Gwynn and the Tax List for 1769 was also copied and typed by her. This material would have filled at least three books of normal size. Therefore, it was thought best to select the deeds for inclusion in this book which seemed to give the most positive information for all genealogists. Joseph W. About Marriages in Tennessee: Marriages were recorded in counties prior to statehood, a few as early as 1778, such as those for Green (1780), Washington (1787), Hawkins (1789), Carter (1790), Jefferson and Knox (1792), and Blount (1795). However, a state law requiring the registration of marriages did not pass until 1815. A subsequent state law in 1838 required marriages to be registered in well-bound books. Between 1838 and 1919 both marriage licenses and bonds were recorded. Taken from Wendy Bebout Elliott, "Tennessee," in Red Book: American State, County, and Town Sources, 3d ed., ed. Alice Eichholz.
