On this Christmas morning the people of God gather to celebrate the birth of the Word made flesh, Christ our Lord. John's Gospel tells of the Word that dwells among us, full of grace and truth. The meaning of Christmas is made clear: the light shines in the darkness. It is in the liturgy that we encounter the Word made flesh in the people of God gathered together as the body of Christ, and in the meal around the holy table. We go forth to be bearers of light as we proclaim this good news to all the ends of the earth. THE LORD S PRAYER (on screen) DISTRIBUTION Lamb of God CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P Blessed be the holy Trinity, + the God of goodness and lovingkindness, whose Son was sent to save us and whose Spirit is poured out on us and renews us. P Amidst the darkness of this world, let us confess our sin and welcome the light of God s forgiveness. Silence for reflection and self-examination. SPECIAL MUSIC The Beautiful Mother POST-COMMUNION BLESSING AND PRAYER BENEDICTION AND DISMISSAL P Jesus Christ is Lord of grace and truth. Go in peace. Serve the Lord. C Thanks be to God. - John Foley P Mary accepted your call to be the mother of Jesus. C Forgive our lack of faith and trust in your will. P Your Son was born in the poverty of a stable. C Forgive our neglect of the poor. P The shepherds left their flocks and went to Bethlehem. C Forgive our selfishness and complacency. P The magi followed the star to find the Savior of the nations. C Forgive our reluctance to seek you with all our hearts. P The angel said, you shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people from their sins. With great joy, we know that we are forgiven in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY P Today Christ is born: alleluia, alleluia! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. P Let us pray together. C Almighty God, you have made yourself known in your Son, Jesus, redeemer of the world. We pray that his birth as a human child will set us free from the old slavery of our sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. -7- -2-
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Hark! The Herald Angels Sing The congregation please stand. SERMON OFFERING Infant Holy, Infant Lowly - Pastor Joel Bjerkestrand - Polish carol SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Adults who know Jesus as their Savior and Lord and who understand that He is present in Communion are invited to partake. Children in the 4 th grade and older who have completed the Communion class are also welcome. All other children will receive a blessing. Communion is by intinction: communicants receive a wafer (the bread) which they then dip in the cup (the wine). Those who choose not to partake of wine may simply hold the wafer over the cup. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P Holy God, Creator of all and Source of life, at the birth of time your Word brought light into the world. In the fullness of time, you sent your Word, born of Mary, to shine in our darkness and to make us your daughters and sons. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his birth and life among us, his death and resurrection, we await his coming again when all things will be restored in him. By your Spirit bless us and this bread and cup, that, held and nourished by you, we may live as your children, shining with the light of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. -3- -6-
