t h e lesson OPENING ACTIVITY AND INTRODUCTION....5 min In today s lesson the children will hear how God called Noah and told him to build an ark. Tell the children that you are going to pretend that they are all the people on the earth at the time Noah lived. Because the people of Noah s time were not obeying God, have everyone make a mean face. Choose one child to be Noah and have him walk away from the others and put his hands together in prayer. Then say, God chose Noah out of all the people on earth to build an ark. Then tell the child playing Noah to pretend to build the ark. Ask the class, When the ark was done, what did God bring to Noah to fill the ark with? (The class may say his family but say, What about after the family? ) When the class answers animals, ask them how many? Then pair the class up and have them act out walking onto the ark as different animals. Assign some to play monkeys, giraffes, tigers, horses, etc. Show them where the pretend gate to the ark is and have them come two by two. You and your helpers can play the part of the people left off the ark. Act afraid because the rain has come. Pretend to pound on the closed door of the ark. Tell everyone in the ark that they are safe from the rain because God is protecting them. Pray for the remainder of the class time before moving forward with the lesson. BIBLE STORY.... 10 min Read story 5, God Chooses Noah, from The Gospel Story Bible. BIBLE STORY DISCUSSION....5 Min After reading the story, use the following questions to involve the children in a discussion: What were the people doing that made God unhappy? (They found more and more ways to disobey God [see Genesis 6:5].) PAGE 36 www.gospelstoryforkids.com

Where did God say the evil of the people came from? (God said the evil came from within their hearts.) Where does the evil come from in our lives? (We have sin in our hearts just like they did.) Did Noah call out to God, or did God call out to Noah? (God called out to Noah and revealed his plan of what he was going to do to the wicked people who lived on the earth.) SNACK QUESTIONS.... 10 min While the children are eating the snack, engage them by asking: Why did God save Noah? (God saved Noah because Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord; he was righteous, blameless, and walked with God [Genesis 6:8 9]. God knew that someone had to survive to continue the family line of Adam. This would ensure that there would be people on the earth so that Jesus could be born to die for our sins.) What would have happened if God had killed everyone? (If all people had been killed, Jesus would not have been born a man and would not have died on the cross. No one could have been saved from hell.) God saved Noah from the flood, but he also saved us by saving Noah. How did he do this? (All men and women from all the countries can trace their families back to Noah. Mary and Joseph can trace their families back to Noah. Without Noah, we would not have Mary and Joseph. By saving Noah, Jesus could be born. That is how God saved his children by saving Noah.) SWORD BIBLE MEMORY.... 5 10 min Take time during the class to review the SWORD Bible Memory verses with the class. Provide the opportunity for each child to recite the verses to an adult worker. Where Is Jesus? Please use the following comments connecting today s lesson to the gospel to help inform your understanding and serve you by aiding your preparation for class. Remember, we want to do more than present disconnected Bible stories and lessons to our young children. We want them to understand how each story in the Bible plays a part in God s greater plan of redemption. Passage: 1 Peter 3:20 22 In the flood, God did finally judge the world for its sin. Peter tells us that the floodwater is a symbol of our baptism in Christ because the water of baptism covers our sin just as the floodwater covered the sinful world. Also, Noah s ark was a symbol of God s salvation in Jesus. There was only one way to be saved from the floodwater. You had to go through the door and live in the ark. The Bible tells us that Jesus is the gate or door through which we must go for salvation. God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God s right hand with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. (1 Peter 3:20 22 niv) So, reading about Noah and the flood should make us think of Jesus and his salvation. ACTIVITIES AND OBJECT LESSONS....20 30 min Coloring Activity Supplies: coloring page 5 one copy for each child While the children are coloring, engage them by asking the following questions: What do you think the people around Noah thought about his idea to build a boat on dry land? (They probably laughed at him and mocked him because they did not believe in God.) PAGE 38 www.gospelstoryforkids.com

Who gave Noah the instructions to build the ark? (God gave him the instructions.) How big do you think the ark was? (The ark was 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. This is bigger than a football field!) The Penalty for Sin Use the following questions to engage the children concerning the penalty for sin. What is the penalty or consequences for sin? (The penalty for sin is death.) When did God first tell man about this? (He told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. On the day they would eat of the tree they would surely die.) Why do you think there is such a terrible penalty for people who sin? (God is holy, and sin is an attack against God.) God s character demands that he destroy evil. How can people escape death? (Jesus died on the cross in our place so we can live forever in heaven.) How is Jesus like the ark? (Trusting in Jesus is our salvation from death just like the ark was Noah s salvation from death [1 Peter 3:20 22].) God Chose Noah Gather the children together and have them make fists with their hands and shake them at one another. Tell them that this represents people with sinful hearts turned against God and each other. Then have them fold their hands together in prayer. Tell them that this represents people who are worshiping God. Explain that you are going to have all of them start out as people who have hearts turned against God. Then as you go through the room you will tap one of them PAGE 39 www.gospelstoryforkids.com

on the shoulder. When they feel the tap they should fold their hands in prayer to show that God touched them and changed them from a person who is against God to a person who loves God. Say that the person you tap will play the role of Noah. Give your class the signal to start clenching their fists and then tap a child on the shoulder. Then say to the child, Noah, build me an ark for soon I will bring a flood. Tell your Noah to pretend to start to build the ark. You can try this several times with different children in your class. After you have repeated the object lesson, engage the children by asking the following questions about what happened. Was Noah a sinner? (Yes, Noah was a sinner.) Who chose Noah? (God chose Noah. Explain that it was God who reached out to Noah. If it were not for God s grace calling Noah out and asking him to build an ark, Noah and his family would have been destroyed with the rest of the people in the flood.) The Mercy of God Use the following questions to engage the children concerning the mercy of God. How could Noah follow the Lord in a time when all the people were wicked? (He trusted the Lord.) How did Noah know who God was? (God walked with Noah and talked with Noah to show him who he was [see Genesis 6:9 14].) The Bible says Noah was a righteous and blameless man. Do you think Noah ever sinned? (Yes, the Bible says everyone has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God [see Romans 3:23]. Noah loved and served God though.) PAGE 40 www.gospelstoryforkids.com

How many sins do you need to commit to be guilty of sin and deserve to die? (one) Since Noah was a sinner, why did God save him? (God saved Noah out of mercy.) When we don t get the punishment we deserve, it is God s mercy to us. How does God show his mercy to us today? (He does not treat us as our sins deserve, and he sent his Son to die on the cross. Jesus took the punishment for our sin so that we would not need to die.) PRAY....5 min Take time at the end of class to thank God for all you learned today. Include parts of your Bible lesson in your prayer as another way for the children to remember what today s lesson was about. PAGE 41 www.gospelstoryforkids.com
