Entrance and Communion Antiphons at Mass A few weeks ago the Entrance and Communion Antiphons were introduced at a few of the weekend Masses. A few questions have come about regarding them so I am hoping this will help clarify things. What is the Entrance Antiphon? The Entrance Antiphon or Introit (from Latin : introitus, "entrance") is part of the opening of the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), when the people are gathered, and as the Priest enters, the Introit begins. Its purpose is to open the celebration, foster the unity of those who have been gathered, introduce their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgical time or festivity, and accompany the procession of the Priest and ministers. There are various options of how it is to be chanted. Here at Sacred Heart, the Introit will be sung, when the bell rings, by the choir with the faithful encouraged to join in. What is the Communion Antiphon? While the Priest consumes the Blessed Sacrament, the Communion Antiphon begins. Its purpose is to express the spiritual union of the communicants by means of the unity of their voices, to show gladness of heart, and to bring out more clearly the communitarian character of the procession to receive the Eucharist. Where can I find them? Both the Entrance and Communion Antiphons can be found in the Pew Missal with the days readings. I hope this helps! -Fr. Charles Did you know that our church has a library? Located at the bottom of the stairs just outside the parish hall on the stage side is our library. Reading is a great way to grow in your faith. Sunday, October 29, 2017 is Priesthood Sunday! Please join us in praying for our priests and for those discerning a call to the priesthood. Religious Education Classes follow the 9:30am Mass Mark Your Calendars: Regular classes on: 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19 Prayer Partners: Have you wondered what is involved in being a prayer partner for faith formation? The commitment is very basic, you can request a teacher, class or particular student to pray for this year. At the Epiphany Pageant on January 7th, prayer partners will have breakfast together. You can offer to pray for general intentions, or request specific intentions from your prayer partner. We currently have about ⅔ of the program supported, please help us get to 100%! Contact Amy in the office, sign up on Flocknote or email dffsheartlebanon@gmail.com. All parishes within the Diocese of Manchester are restoring the original order of celebrating the sacraments of initiation between 2018-2021. In the early church, people were initiated into the community at one single event. They were baptized, anointed with chrism, and shared in the Eucharist. The sacraments, over time, have been separated from one another and this happened for a variety of reasons. The Second Vatican Council asked the Church to make it more clear that Confirmation is intimately connected with Baptism and the whole of Christian initiation. This also helps us to see that Eucharist completes our initiation into the Church. Go to www.catholicnh.org/lifelong for more information on this important change.
