The anonymous man of today s gospel expresses the ageless human hunger for life. He stands for all of us. This man takes it for granted that eternal life is the fruit of a virtuous existence. He has always observed the commandments. He is unwittingly in a good position to be saved. But this man is still lacking something. It might even be said that he is lacking everything. We have given nothing to God if we are not ready to give it all. The love of Christ calls us to a total gift which is concretized in the call, Come, follow me. This is a question neither of morality nor asceticism, but of commitment to Jesus. It is no longer a question of doing more, of distinguishing percept from counsel. To follow Christ means all or nothing, your money or your life. The Church s passion for the life issues stems from her foundational belief that every human life is created in God s image and likeness and that God sees His divine image in every life he creates. Thus, God is insulted and offended when His image is defaced by any crime that degrades, diminishes or destroys human life. Cardinal Sean O Malley of Boston, writing on behalf of the Bishops of the United States, expresses this truth beautifully: Our worth is based not on our skills or levels of productivity. Rather, we discover our worth when we discover our true identity found in the unchangeable, permanent fact that we are created in God s image and likeness and called to an eternal destiny with Him. Because of this, nothing can diminish our God-given dignity, and therefore, nothing can diminish the immeasurable worth of our lives. Others may fail to respect that dignity - but in doing so only distances themselves from God s loving embrace. During this coming month, may we all ask ourselves how well we uphold, promote and defend the dignity of every life and whether or not we share the Church s godly view of the dignity of all human life. Further, we are all encouraged to pray and work for the success of pro-life efforts. FAMILY SUPPORT MINISTRY PRESENTS: Addiction Experiences: 2 recovering addicts share their own stories Please join us on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 pm in the Youth and Young Adult Center. Family Support Ministry is part of the larger new diocesan ministry called the Substance Addiction Ministry (SAM). This ministry provides support, education and resources for those with addictions as well as the family, friends, neighbors or coworkers of the addicted. Holy Sepulcher is the host parish for the Butler / South Butler parish community. Please call Paula or Mark McDaniel with questions at 724-717-8354 or email pmcdaniel@smithfield.com. 2016 HOLY SEPULCHER MEN S RETREAT The dates for the Holy Sepulcher Men s Retreat at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center, Pittsburgh, PA have been scheduled for April 22, 23 and 24 of 2016. Mark your calendar! As you know, ALL of the men, regardless of age, are welcome to this spiritual and relaxing weekend. If anyone has any questions whatsoever, please contact Bob Speck at 724-612-6370 or Ron Hartzel at 724-496-4771. Keep watching the bulletin for more details as the dates come closer! AN INVITATION TO MOVE UP! - MOBILITY & VITALITY LIFESTYLE PROGRAM - If you are in the 60-75 age group, you are invited to consider joining a group of 10-15 participants in a year-long behavioral weight loss program. The program is evidencebased, safe, and effective to help individuals lose weight and move around more easily. The 32 sessions will take place at Holy Sepulcher and led by Theresa Eury. Please call 412-383-1303 at Pitt to see if you are eligible. There are only 15 spots available, so call today! INFLUENZA AND THE LITURGY Every time the cold and flu season arrives, we hear public service announcements on how to limit the spread of disease through normal good hygienic practices. When the community gathers for Mass or other celebrations, please keep in mind the following: Keep tissues or a clean handkerchief available for coughs, sneezes, and sniffles. Once used, please put the tissues in a pocket or purse (perhaps a simple plastic sandwich bag) until you can properly dispose of them. Please don t set them on the seat, the hymnals, etc. Sometimes school students are taught when a sudden cough comes upon them, they should nestle their mouth and nose in their elbow, rather than use their hands. Speaking of hands, be careful of them. Use common sense in keeping them clean and avoid contact with your mouth and nose in the cold and flu season. The Sign of Peace: remember there is no single gesture required for this sign. Some may prefer to shake hands, others may offer an embrace, and still others, to place a hand on another s shoulder or to offer a simple bow. This is a time to express our peace in Jesus Christ, before we share the Communion of His Body and Blood. Be thoughtful, as we share this sign; be considerate of the sensitivities of others. Be mindful and reverent in receiving Communion, as the Ministers should also be, in practicing normal hygienic safeguards. If you are very sick or know you have an easily communicable disease, you are not bound by obligation to participate in Mass on Sunday. Stay at home and return to Mass when you are well. For longer illnesses, please contact the church office so arrangements can be made for someone to bring you the Eucharist. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Next weekend we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. This year we are invited to support the 1,150 of the youngest dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Please keep the Missions in your prayers and please be generous in next weekend s collection for the society of the Propagation on the Faith.
