FROM THE PASTOR First Sunday of Advent Dear Friends and Parishioners, I hope you had a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving Day with your family and friends. I am sure there was so much food to go around, especially with a big turkey. People say that if you eat too much turkey, you become a turkey (just kidding!). Not only food that we shared, I am sure you enjoyed the gathering of families and friends to be thankful and to share the many blessings with each other. As for my family, I went home to Mira Mesa where my parents live and had November 30, 2014 a wonderful dinner with them and with my brothers and sisters along with their children. It was a great day to be with family for all of us. Today the Church enters into a new calendar year, which begins with this first Sunday of Advent. The Church uses the season of Advent, which lasts four weeks, to help us Chris ans to prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus to come into the world at Christmas. Thus Advent is a me of preparing, watching and wai ng. Through today s readings, the Church invites us to embrace the spirit of hope, faith and readiness both for the commemora on of Christ s coming and of his final coming at the end of me. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. - Mark 13:33 SACRIFICIAL GIVING The collection for Sunday, November 23 will be posted in next week s bulletin. As we have heard from the Gospel, we must be watchful. How then should we watch and wait? During Advent, we prepare to celebrate Christ s first coming at Christmas long ago because that is the guarantee that he will come again in glory to complete his work of redemp on. But between his first and final comings there are the countless ways he wants to come into our lives, through the events that make up every day living: The rela onships we have with one another, the joys and sorrows we experience, our success and failures, the good that we do and, yes, even the sins we commit. Christ is never out there but also here, with us in every aspect of our lives. Advent is an invita on to be aware of Christ s presence in our lives here and now and to respond as best we can to that presence. Doing just that is the best way to be ready for Christ s glorious return at the end of me. Have a wonderful week! Fr. Michael Pham Fr. Michael M.
