SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT PARISH COMMUNITY LIVING THE GOSPEL... ~ IN FAITH ~ IN WORSHIP ~ IN SERVICE Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9 & 10, 2017 From the Desk of the Pastor My dear parish family, as we celebrate today, we have so many things happening and to be thankful for. First, welcome to Msgr. Thomas Maloney, known to us as Father Thomas, who recently retired as the Pastor of St. Amelia Parish and now joins our parish ministry team as a Part-Time Parochial Vicar. Father Thomas has already been celebrating Masses, anointing our sick and spending time in our school with our children and with our faculty and staff. We are very thankful to Father Thomas for his willingness and great desire to continue to serve and we are blessed that he has chosen to be with us at St. Gregory the Great! Welcome Father Thomas! Next, thank you to all who assisted with our Labor Day Car Show! I believe it was a huge success and it was a wonderful day the weather was great; the cars were awesome, and everyone had an excellent time together. Thank you to all of our parishioners who gave their Labor Day to making this event a great success! This coming Saturday, September 16, we will celebrate the Diaconate Ordination at St. Joseph Cathedral at 9:30am. All are invited to come to the Ordination Mass. This year s Deaconate Ordination is of particular significance for us at St. Gregory s as Paul Cygan will be ordained a Transitional Deacon. You will remember that Paul served at St. Gregory s for his Pastoral year from August 2015 through May 2016. Paul graced us with his thoughtful reflections at Masses (weekdays and a couple weekends) and was very active in our school, Family Faith, Life Teen Youth Ministry and more. Please pray for Paul as he will be ordained this Saturday and please consider coming to pray with him at his Ordination. We also look forward to May 2018 when Deacon Paul Cygan will be ordained to the Priesthood and become Father Paul Cygan. We love you, Paul, and know of our prayers and best wishes as you enter the Sacrament of Holy Orders! I wish to remind everyone that on Sunday, September 24, we will celebrate with Father Sibby a Mass of Thanksgiving for his ministry here at St. Gregory s and host a reception in the Ministry Center following the Mass. (cont d on pg. 2) THANK YOU TO OUR ST GREGORY THE GREAT CAR SHOW VOLUNTEERS!!! A memorable day was enjoyed by all who attended the St Gregory the Great Fourth Annual Car Show held on Labor Day, Monday, September 4. A big Thank You goes out to all of our sponsors and volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to help out at the Car Show. Without all of you wonderful volunteers, the Fourth Annual Car Show could not have been as successful as it was. About 250 car owners and over 2,000 people enjoyed the show. Again, thank you very much for your generosity and for all that you have done for the St Gregory the Great Parish Community. May God bless you for your kindness and support. ~ Father Sibby Pierro

(Matthew 18:15) Adult: What have you been able to overcome because others patiently loved you? Child: How can you help another person do the right thing? VOCATION VIEW Christian lives are not lived in isolation, but through relationships. It is also through relationships that our sense of vocation manifests itself. By looking at your relationships, what can you sense about your vocation? If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Fr. Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the Priest of the Month stories on our website www.buffalovocations.org! CHRIST THE KING COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 9 & 10 This weekend we will hold our annual collection to benefit Christ the King Seminary. There are many people ready to answer the call to ministry to meet the needs of today s church in our diocese; please help them by giving generously and remembering Christ the King in your prayers. PARISH SOCIAL/NEW PARISHIONER WELCOME All parishioners, including new families, are invited to join us for coffee, juice and donuts this Sunday, September 10, after 9:30am Mass, in the Gathering Rooms. CATHOLIC EDUCATION COLLECTION A second collection to benefit Catholic Education will take place next weekend, September 16 and 17. All contributions remain in the Parish to support Catholic education of our children. ~ 2 ~ From the Desk of the Pastor (cont d from pg. 1) Please make every effort to come and pray with Father Sibby and to wish him well as he now serves as the Pastor of St. Amelia Parish in Tonawanda. Sunday, October 1, will be the annual Life Chain on Niagara Falls Boulevard. We have seen great growth in recent years at St. Gregory s in this valuable ministry. When I arrived in 2014 I was told to expect a half-dozen or dozen people to come from St. Gregory s. Last year we were about 300 people strong children, teens, young adults, adults and seniors. Thank you to all who have participated in the past and please put it on your calendar to come this year. We will leave by bus from St. Gregory s front Church doors at 1:30pm. We will stand on the corner of Maple Road and Niagara Falls Boulevard in front of the Boulevard Mall for one hour in silent prayer from 2:00 to 3:00pm. The event ends promptly at 3:00pm and we will return to St. Gregory s for a pizza social together. There will be a cut-out in the Bulletin for you to return to our Parish Office either by way of the Sunday collection basket or by dropping it off or through the mail. Please come to stand for the dignity of human life and the lives of the unborn who cannot speak for themselves. This annual national event does focus especially on the unborn, but is also an opportunity to stand for all human life issues from the moment of conception to natural death. With the rise of interest in legalizing physician assisted suicide, and the epidemic rise in the misuse of drugs leading to daily deaths in Western New York, this year s Life Chain is a prayerful opportunity to stand for all issues pertaining to the dignity of human life. Finally, congratulations to our candidates for Confirmation for Spring 2018. This Sunday, September 10, at the 4:30pm Mass we will celebrate our Mass of Confirmation Enrollment and witness our teens make their commitment to prepare for this Sacrament at St. Gregory s. The parish community is the home for all Sacraments to be celebrated and it is a privilege to walk with our teens as they mature in their Faith and make this awesome commitment to God and His Church. Many of our teens have already made their Confirmation Retreat over the summer and we have two more retreats this fall. Our dear teens, please know of our love and prayer for you always. May God bless you, our Mother Mary watch over you and St. Gregory the Great intercede for you, always!

Sacred Heart Mission Trip Over the summer, St. Greg's class of 2016 alumni and Life Teen Members Alex Judge (left picture, bottom right) and Cassie Bianchi (bottom picture, second from the left) participated in separate mission trips through Sacred Heart Academy in the Dominican Republic. The mission trips were ten days long and the girls taught the children various useful skills, made Bible-related crafts, assisted families with chores, sang songs, and spread the Word of God. By the end of the first day, the students had memorized the Spanish songs and were able to communicate with the town of El Factor. The mission trips were lead by Sr. Lisa from Pennsylvania and Miss D'Andrea and Miss Egan from Sacred Heart. Both girls said that the trip was fun and eye-opening. Sacred Heart had so much participation that two trips were needed. Alex attended the first trip in July and Cassie attended the second trip in August. Our next College Life event will be Monday, September 11 in the café! ~ 6 ~ The 100 th Anniversary of Fatima Fifth Apparition of Our Lady September 13, 1917 On September 13, up to 25,000 people gathered in Fatima. The children made their way to the Cova da Iria with great difficulty because the roads were packed with people wanting to see and talk to them. They were only able to advance because some gentlemen went ahead and opened a path for them. At last, when they arrived at the Cova they began to pray the Rosary with the people. Shortly afterwards, there was a flash of light and Our Lady appeared. She said, Continue to pray the Rosary in order to obtain the end of the war. In October Our Lord will come, as well as Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Carmel. St. Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus and bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices. He does not want you to sleep with the rope on, but only to wear it during the daytime (the children wore a rope tightly tied around their waist as a way to offer penance). Lucia then put forward the many petitions for cures people had given her. Our Lady responded, Yes, I will cure some, but not others. In October, I will perform a miracle so that all may believe. Then she began to ascend, as usual, to the east and disappeared. On Wednesday, September 13, a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be in the Church for prayer and public veneration. A Rosary prayer service will follow both the 8:00am and 12:00 noon masses that day.

Won t you consider being a witness for your Faith and join us? "Defend the unborn against abortion even if they persecute you, calumniate you, set traps for you, take you to court or kill you. A more subtle form is emotional infidelity. It can start when one spouse feels under-appreciated and gets affirmation from someone outside the marriage. Sometimes work (paid or volunteer) or even the needs of one's own children can be the source. Giving time and attention now can prevent an emotional affair later. Parenting Perspective Sometimes parents of young adults (15-30+) struggle with what appears to be a lack of faith in their offspring. Consider, "Sometimes you must lose faith to find it." Your child may have to let go of "inherited faith" and eventually reflect on what is missing in their life. ~ 9 ~
