Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 15 September 2013 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Desk of Msgr. Tosi -- On May 26, 1973 a young man from Saint Ann Parish in Flushing was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint James in downtown Brooklyn. That newly ordained priest is now blessed with being pastor of Saint Luke Parish here in Whitestone. Yes - this year on May 26, 2013 to be exact, I celebrated the fortieth Anniversary of my ordination. Now I would like to celebrate the gift of priesthood with my family, friends and especially all of you - my parish family. On Sunday, October 6th at the 1:00pm Mass, a Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated with a Dinner Dance reception (a live band too!) to follow under a tent on the Great Lawn. An invitation can be found in today s bulletin with a response form included. If you wish to attend, it is necessary to return the response form so that preparations can be made for this adults only event. Please note - a special children s fun day celebration will be held on Saturday, October 5th. In this way all age groups can celebrate with me! I would be so honored and happy if you were able to share this anniversary with me by your presence at Mass and the Dinner Dance to follow. Of course there is no charge for this event and all are invited. However, it is necessary to return the response form - please no walk ins or children possible at the reception. I m sure you can appreciate how important it is for you to respond as soon as possible. Priesthood is indeed a gift to the church from the Lord. Let us pray for the priests of the church (and especially of our parish) and for an increase in priestly vocations. Your love, prayers and friendship are among God s many gifts to me. I do hope you can celebrate this special anniversary with me. God bless. Let us pray for one another, Invitations to both anniversary events are found in the center of today s bulletin. Page 1

Please seriously and prayerfully consider becoming involved in this most important ministry. For additional information, please contact Sister Katherine at (718) 746-3409. **************************************************************************** HYMNALS MAKE A RETURN TO SAINT LUKE On the First Sunday of Advent we will begin using a parish hymnal in the church. These hymnals will replace the yearly Missalettes that we have been using. The Hymnals will be a permanent worship aid - containing a variety of music, much of which we already know. And yes, they will contain the scripture readings for Sunday Mass. In addition, the hymnals - although more expensive to purchase - will result in a large savings for the parish. The yearly cost of the Missalettes is near $4,000 - only to be thrown out at the end of the liturgical year. More information will be printed in the weeks to come about possible Memorial opportunities. Page 2

To An Altar Server To assist Christ at the altar; To serve Him freely there, Where even the angels falter, Bowed low in reverent prayer. To touch the throne most holy, To hand the gifts for the feast, To see Him meek and lowly, Descend at the word of the priest. To hear man s poor petition, To sound the joyful bell, When He in sweet submission, Comes down with us to dwell. No grander mission surely Should inflame such prayerful ferver, No heart should love more purely, Than yours O altar server. May God bless you forever, And keep you in His care, And guard you, that you never Belie the robes you wear. Throughout life, then, endeavor God s graces to employ, For your most deserving reward, Will be eternal joy. Page 11
