St Charles K of C has prepared a tasty meal to be served in the Lower Parish Hall. All proceeds will help to settle in our soon-to-arrive Evangelizing Sisters of Mary. The K of C plans to purchase sheets, towels, kitchen utensils, etc. for the 6818 Charles Avenue Convent. Hope to see a good crowd and many thanks, K of C! January was a very good month for St Charles Parish, thanks to some canny insight, hard work, and determination on the part of some talented and generous people. Here s a report to you and a Big Thank You to those who handled the gifts/grants/ donations described below: 1) John Kedzior, long-time valued member of our Parish Finance Council, applied to a charitable foundation for a substantial grant for St Charles Parish. The grant application was approved and our parish received a check for $76,000 to improve the Charles Avenue playground/parking lot. The funds can only be used for the purpose specified in the grant. Over the last few years we replaced, with concrete, the aprons and driveways at the east and west ends of the lot. We will see this spring or summer how far that $76,000 will take us in replacing with concrete the areas presently covered with asphalt. The records indicate the current asphalt dates to a 1988 resurfacing. Thank you, John Kedzior, and to all the men and women who serve us so well on our Parish Finance Council. 2) A parish family, who wish to remain anonymous, gave a $25,000 gift to St Charles. The family grateful for the excellent education their children received here--asked that their gift be used for the permanent benefit of children and add something special to our educational program. In our discussion, I mentioned that I would like to re-institute the Children s Liturgy of the Word Program. (We offered this for many years at the old 10:30am Hall Mass children would leave Mass, with a trained catechist, after the Opening Prayer. Children then receive a Scripture lesson appropriate to their age. The kids return to the Mass and to their parents after the Prayer of the Faithful.) My suggestion met with the family s approval. With the their generous gift, we have re-vamped the room under the Ridge Road Lobby of our church. The area has been made kid friendly : the old tile walls have been covered, carpeting installed, the woodwork painted, and the lavatory repaired. It will be the perfect spot, in a great atmosphere, for children to learn on Sunday mornings. (This area will also double as the Bride s Room, prior to weddings.) Thank you, St Charles family! So, two weeks from today, beginning on the First Sunday of Lent, February 18, for children ages 4 to 7, we will offer Children s Liturgy of the Word at the Sunday 10:00am Mass. 3) Our multi-talented Day School Principal, Eileen Updegrove, wrote a grant proposal and submitted it to the diocesan Rooted in Faith Forward in Hope campaign office. This is the fifth and final year for grants. Word was received this week that our grant proposal was approved and that St Charles will receive a $10,000 award for Cameras for Kids Security Enhancement to upgrade the security system currently under contract. Well done and many thanks, Principal Updegrove. Email address
