Today we are confronted with Jesus question, Who do you say that I am? As we enter into our prayer today, let us ponder our own answer to that question. For Christ is the one who calls us to take up our cross and follow him. Self-discovery is part of every person's life. To a greater or lesser extent, individuals learn about themselves as they go through various stages of maturing. Adolescence is an early period of self-understanding, when teenagers begin individualizing themselves, sometimes rebelling against parental values, sometimes integrating them into their own lives. College years and young adulthood are another period when men and women begin to uncover more about their own place in the world. A traumatic experience in middle age-job loss, divorce, serious illness-may also provoke a time of self-reflection, during which a person may question what the meaning of his or her own life is. The story in Luke's Gospel this weekend (like many of the Gospel stories) can be read in several different ways. Is the human nature of Jesus seeking an understanding of who he is, uncovering the mystery of his divine nature during his time of prayer? Or is the story written by the disciples many years later in their own quest to understand who Jesus was even as he walked among them? Or is this an account of the inspirational action of the Holy Spirit, giving Peter the insight to speak accurately about who Jesus is? Or is this a teaching of Luke the Gospel writer, putting the death and resurrection of Jesus in a context that unites the day-to-day experience of a believer with the final act of Jesus? Or is it all of these, and more, at one and the same time? Biblical scholars can give us a lot on which to reflect. As the Gospel points out, for believers, the quest of selfdiscovery includes an identification with Christ. As he says in the Gospel, a follower "must deny himself and take up his cross daily...whoever loses his life for my sake will save it" (Lk 9:23-24). Here is the true path to self-discovery for the Christian. It is revealed in our connection to the death and resurrection of Christ. 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc

It is especially discourteous to leave before the priest and the other liturgical ministers have completed the closing procession down the center aisle. Arriving and leaving Mass at the proper time will enhance everyone s worship experience. Fathers Stan, Slawek, and Mariusz and the other liturgical ministers thank you for your cooperation.

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Protect Rights of Conscience and Religious Liberty! House to Vote on Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act It is anticipated that the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 1797) will be considered on the House floor as early as June 18. Please urge your Representative to oppose all weakening amendments and to support the bill. Because there is substantial medical evidence that an unborn child is capable of experiencing pain at least by 20 weeks after fertilization, this measure asserts a compelling governmental interest in protecting unborn children from this stage. H.R. 1797 makes it unlawful to perform or attempt to perform an abortion if the probable postfertilization age of the unborn child is 20 weeks or greater. An exception is made if an abortion is necessary to save the life of the woman. Recommended Actions: Send e-mails through NCHLA s Grassroots Action Center at: nchla.org/actiondisplay.asp?id=309. Contact your Representative by phone. Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at: 202-224-3121, or call your Representative s local office. Additional contact info can be found on Representatives web sites at: www.house.gov. Background In a June 14 letter to Congress, Cardinal Seán O Malley, chairman of the U.S. bishops Committee on Pro- Life Activities, urged support for H.R. 1797. The revelation of Dr. Kermit Gosnell s crimes committed while providing abortions has led many Americans to realize that our permissive laws and attitudes have allowed the abortion industry to undertake these procedures. People are repulsed by the callous and barbarous treatment of women and children in Gosnell s clinic, and in other clinics that abort children after 20 weeks. Some children in Gosnell s clinic were born alive and crying or screaming in pain, until their lives were intentionally and deliberately ended. These procedures also pose serious dangers to women, as evidenced by Gosnell s own manslaughter conviction for one woman s death, and news about the death or serious complications of other women undergoing such procedures. Many women were sent to Gosnell by other abortion clinics. The Cardinal asks: What does it say about us as a nation, if we will not act against abortions that even full-time abortionists find abhorrent? The Cardinal concludes: On behalf of our country and the children whose lives are at stake, I urge you to support the common-sense reform offered by H.R. 1797. See: nchla.org/datasource/idocuments/paincapableltr061413.pdf The Obama Administration s contraceptive/abortifacient/sterilization mandate will begin to be enforced against nonprofit religious schools, charities and health care providers on August 1. In the days to come, Congress must decide whether to address this problem through must-pass legislation before that deadline. Members of the House should be urged to include the Health Care Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940) in the next bill needed to keep the federal government operating. Please act today to protect conscience rights and religious liberty! Recommended Actions: Send e-mails through NCHLA s Grassroots Action Center at: nchla.org/actiondisplay.asp?id=292. Contact your Representative by phone. Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at: 202-224-3121, or call your Representative s local office. Additional contact info can be found on Representatives web sites at: www.house.gov. Suggested Message: Please include the Health Care Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940) in upcoming mustpass legislation. Government must not force Americans to violate their religious and moral beliefs on respect for life when they provide health care or purchase health coverage. When: Please contact your Representative today! For a Fact Sheet on H.R. 940, see: nchla.org/datasource/idocuments/hccrafactsheet.pdf. The Catholic Perspective: Advance Directives for Health Care Form Documents which provide guidance when a person is no longer able to make health care decisions are called advance directives. It is recommended that those completing an advance directive also appoint a health care representative who is someone who is trusted and authorized to evaluate what the patient would want and to make those health care decisions. The Catechism of the Catholic Church provides clear guidance on end of life issues. The New Jersey Catholic Conference (NJCC) of Bishops has an Advance Directives for Health Care form which reflects the Catholic perspective. Copies are available by contacting the Respect Life Office at 732-562-1990 ext. 1629 or 1543. A copy can also be downloaded from the diocesan website at http://diometuchen.org/offices-and-ministries/pastorallife/respect-for-life/catholic-advance-directives-living-wills/ or the NJCC website: www.njcathconf.com. These forms are also available in Spanish.
