Third Sunday of Advent December 16 & 17, 2017 ST. JUDE THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH Established 1966 9150 Highland Road Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70810 (On the Corner of Highland Road and Gardere Lane) St. Jude the Apostle Church, as a Catholic Faith Community, strives to spread the love of Christ by embracing our diversity of God-given gifts celebrated in prayer, sacraments, Eucharistic worship, fellowship, religious education, and service to the local and world community. St. Jude Parish Advisory Council: March 15, 2006 Gaudete Sunday Gaudete means rejoice! On Gaudete Sunday rosecolored vestments may be worn instead of violet, which is otherwise prescribed for every day in the season of Advent. Gaudete Sunday was also known as "Rose Sunday". In churches that have an Advent wreath, the rose colored candle is lit in addition to two of the violet colored candles, which represent the first two Sundays of Advent. The readings on the third Sunday emphasize the joyous anticipation of the Lord's coming. In his 2014 Gaudete Sunday homily, Pope Francis said that Gaudete Sunday is known as the "Sunday of joy," and that instead of fretting about "all they still haven't" done to prepare for Christmas, people should "think of all the good things life has given you." The Third Sunday of Advent Saturday and Sunday December 9-10, 2017 www.stjudecatholic.org December 16-17, 2017 Dear Friends: Last weekend was a busy one here at Saint Jude! It started actually on Thursday with our DMA Christmas potluck luncheon, during which our school children who are the Community Cougars came and sang for us! We celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, our music ministry Christmas party on Saturday night, and our Knights of Columbus/Catholic Daughters Christmas party on Sunday night. Thank you to Nancy Kora for organizing our DMA luncheon and for making spaghetti, to John Monzon and Haggai Davis of our Men s Club for preparing an awesome meal for our music ministry, and to our Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters, and Ladie s Kaycee Auxiliary for a great party on Sunday night! Tis the season, for sure, here at Saint Jude! In our first reading from Isaiah this weekend we read, The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the Lord and a day of vindication by our God. These words primarily refer to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. They also challenge us as well. God s Spirit is upon each of us. We are asked to bring glad tidings to those around us, especially the poor and vulnerable. Thank you to our Saint Vincent de Paul Society who does this all year long. Thank you to all of you who helped with our annual Giving Tree project. Now, however, is the time for each and everyone of us to consider, who in my life can I bring comfort to? I hope you have a great week! Sincerely, Fr. Trey Nelson Pastor CATHOLICISM 101 Sign Up Today! www.stjudecatholic.org (Click on Catholicism 101 )
