MONTHLY SYLLABUS SESSION-2017-18 CLASS-IV SUBJECT : SOCIAL STUDIES MONTH CONTENT TERM-I (APRIL-SEPTEMBER) April 2017 Lesson 1: India An Introduction Introduction of our country India. Map of world to be introduced and India to be highlighted. Meaning and importance of map. Signs, symbols and colour used in map. Knowledge of directions with respect to Indian states. Concept of unity in diversity to be introduced etc. Indicate directions in the map of India. Write and names of 29 states and 7 Union territories with their capitals. Write the mark the names of four metro cities in the map of India. Lesson 2: From Delhi towards India Description of states in the North, South, East and West 1

directions. Discussion about different places of India like Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Mumbai, Bangaluru, Kanyakumari and North Eastern States. Knowledge about The Seven Sisters of India. Discussion on the weather conditions of these places etc. Write the names of Indian states where Ganga flows. Indicate Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura on Political Map of India. Lesson 5 : The Desert of India Concept of Desert its meaning and important features. Location of Thar desert, its climate, vegetation and animal husbandry to be discussed. Water facilities available there. India Gandhi canal its origin and importance etc. Activity: Mark Indira Gandhi Canal in the political map of India. 3

Difference between plateau and hills etc. Paste pictures of plateau and hills. Mark the major plateaus in Map of India. Arrange a quiz about all the features of Balampur in class. Lesson 7 : Coastal Regions of India Introduction, meaning and definition of coast. Discussion on climatic condition of sea coast. Western coast Gujarat to Kerala, Sea ports, Monsoon etc. Features of Kanyakumari Southern most tip of main land India. Eastern Coast Kanyakumari to Bengal, main rivers of this 4

region, agriculture and Sunderban delta. Benefits of sea coast etc. Mark the Natural and Artificial sea ports on Eastern and Western Coast on the map of India. September 2017 September 2017 REVISION FOR SA-I EXAMS SA-I EXAMINATION TERM-II (OCTOBER-MARCH) October 2017 Lesson 4 : Rivers of India and their Plains This lesson has to be repeated and evaluated in the final exam. Repeat the content again in class as it will be evaluated in the final examination. As this chapter has contents that are useful for further classes also. Lesson 8 : Seasons Meaning and unit of temperature Difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius. Difference in the temperatures of different states of India. 5

Winter season its features, festivals, cultivation and clothing. Description of cold waves. Summer season its features, cultivation and clothing and meaning of loo. Rainy season : Monsoon, distribution of rain in whole India etc. Activity Write down the maximum and minimum temperature for atleast 10 days each in winter and summer season. Paste pictures of clothes worn in all the three seasons. November 2017 Lesson 9 : Festivals of India : Joy and Celebration Reasons to celebrate festivals and different ways of celebration Celebration of National festivals and information about our constitution Relating festivals with the cultivation of crops. Festivals of different religions. Reasons to celebrate Diwali and Dussehra and different festivals of whole year. Festivals celebrated in the north-eastern states etc. Encourage children to make a collage of different festivals by dividing them into groups. You can display the best one in class. 6

Lesson 10 : Games of India Introduction about the games played in India. Hockey, Kabaddi, Chess, Cricket, Polo, Volleyball and Football. Detailed description of the origin of these games and rules of playing them to be discussed in class etc. Write 5 lines about your favourite player. Paste his/her picture in the notebook. December 2017 Lesson 11: Administration of India Brief history of India Knowledge about the Constitution of India Difference between democracy and Monarchy. Parts of government Executive, legislature and judiciary Roles of Prime Minister and President. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Supreme Court of India etc. Role play on Election process of legislative assembly can be arranged in class. Election can be done in class to choose the monitor. Lesson 12: Our National Symbols 7

Importance of National symbols. Difference between National anthem and National Song. Knowledge about National Emblem etc. Activity: Arrange a small quiz on National Symbols in class. Assign one national symbol to students and ask them to make a flash card of the same and display it in the class. January 2018 Lesson 13: We are all Indians Variation on the basis of physical appearance of North Eastern People. Reasons behind their different appearance. Climatic conditions of North East region. Famous personalities of North Eastern Region. Inculcating the value of living together with love and affection. Concept of Unity in Diversity etc. Activity: Write the names of famous personalities of the seven sister states and paste their pictures. Mark seven sister states in the map of India. 1 st Week of February 2018 Lesson 14: Our Neighbouring Countries 8

Highlight the neighbouring countries in the map of India and display in class. Discussion on the countries like Maldives, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan. Explain about the physical features, life of people, agriculture and profession of people of these countries. Discuss about animals found here, religion followed by the people of these countries etc. Activity: Colour the neighbouring countries of India with different colours in the map of India and write their names with capital.
