[Home] MASJID JAMEK BATU UBAN, PULAU PINANG (1734) Alamat : Masjid Jamek Batu Uban Koordinat : 5.350384, 100.309181 [English] Jalan Batu Uban, 11700 Gelugor, Pulau Pinang.
[Home] [Malay] MASJID JAMEK BATU UBAN, PENANG (1734) Address : Masjid Jamek Batu Uban Coordinate : 5.350384, 100.309181 Jalan Batu Uban, 11700 Gelugor, Pulau Pinang. Masjid Jamek Batu Uban is the oldest mosque in Penang which is located in Gelugor area. The mosque is believed to have been built before 1734. The founder of Masjid Batu Uban was Haji Muhammad Salleh who was also known as Nakhoda Nan Intan Ibni Almarhum Tunku Patih Nan Sebatang. The early history of the mosque began in 1734 when it was just a smaller mosque. It was then expanded and named Masjid Batu Uban. There are two different versions of story regarding the name of the mosque. The first one which is based on the oral history is the mosque was built on a ban which means a big stone in the North dialect. The second version states that there was a big stone in the middle of the sea which resembles a human head full of grey hair (which is called uban in Malay Language). The architecture of the building resembles the mosques in Minangkabau while the roof was influenced by the Chinese architecture. The original structure of the building is the four pillars quadrangular series in the middle of the mosque which are still there ever since 281 years ago. The pillars are said to be derived from Jerejak Island. The other original structures are the place where ablution is performed and the well which is still in use to this day. The mosque is managed by the Coordinating Committee under the auspices of Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAIPP). The original building of this mosque was only able to accommodate a congregation of 100 people. It was then enlarged to accommodate the capacity of pilgrims of 500 people. There is also a Tahfiz School nearby which is funded by the mosque and the syllabus is taken from the Islamic Religious Department. There are various activities conducted by the mosque such as KAFA classes, activities in the holy month of Ramadhan and Eid-ul-Adha celebration. In 2008, the mosque was gazetted as one of the World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to its reaching age of 281 years old.
