Hamilton C. Telle / Jane Hamilton C. Telle* Son of Ephraim White / Ann Espy* Birth: 1827 Luzerne County, Pennsylvania Death: after June 1896 Marriage: abt 1847 Jane Birth: 1820 New York Death: 16 Feb 1891 New York City, New York 1850 Census: New York City, New York, Ward #16 page 245 Hamilton C. Telle 33 male carpenter PA Jane Telle 30 female New York. Letter from Tabitha Telle Sykes to Martha Telle Cannon [half sisters] dated 27 Jun 1893. I went to the place where Uncle Hamilton boards but to my great regret he was not home, and I had so far to go to reach my stopping place, that I could not wait for him. The poor old man is all alone in the great wilderness of New York, and I have not seen him for over a year. The King family never see him at all. His wife did something that offended them when Sarah [Telle King, sister to Martha and Tabitha] died, and you know how easy it is for young people to forget and ignore the old. I must do them justice, however, when Aunt Jane died, I went to them and they all responded generously and helped me to pay funeral expenses. Uncle H. is or has been a very nice mechanic, -- a cabinet maker, and in these later years, a carpenter, but he is old and very deaf and he was out of work for more than two years, during which time he used up the very little he had saved. It was not in him to be provident when he was young. He belonged to a military company, [most likely the Civil War] and he and Aunt Jane dressed handsomely and went to balls, and enjoyed life immensely -- Pool old gentleman -- he has never lost his military step and soldier look though he left his regiment many years ago. He is very proud and reserved and has few friends. While my husband was on the rail road I kept close watch of them -- went often to see them and did a great deal for them. When Aunt Jane died I took charge of every thing and went and paid the Undertaker the day after the funeral." Letter from Tabitha Telle Sykes to Martha Telle Cannon dated 18 Jul 1893. The other brother's name was Sydney; he was the youngest of the family next to Uncle Hamilton. He died a good many years ago. I never saw him, but have heard Aunt Jane say that at one time he lived in New York. He did not die there. I have heard my mother's people say that our Grandmother Telle married the second time and Uncles Hamilton and Sydney were the children of that second marriage, but Uncle Hamilton would never acknowledge it, and as he was always Telle, I have thought that it was a mistake -- especially as my family had no way of knowing much about my father or his people. Letter from Annie Sykes, [niece] to Martha Telle Cannon dated 30 Sept 1896, "Uncle Hamilton we lost track of during Mama's [Tabitha Telle Sykes] illness and supposed he must be dead as he was so old and feeble; but one day some weeks after, he appeared to Papa at the father's place of business in New York looking well and much as usual. He is boarding with a family on Equib (?) Avenue and promised to call on Papa again." 134
