Dear Brother Knights and Friends, GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE We often see all the reports of disasters around the world and in our own country. Sometimes we can feel a bit hopeless and down about the way thing seem to be going, since our news cycle always seem to show so much of the bad in the world and not enough of the good. I would like to take this time to share with you a quote I found on the internet. When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. To this day especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother s words, and I am comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers. So many caring people in the world. Fred Rogers I believe, we as Knight s of Columbus are some of those helpers in our village, state, country and the world. People seem to know us, but not really what we do. We are always there behind the scenes quietly doing good works. Working to make our communities a better place to live. From helping the disabled with our ID drive, to sending financial assistance to those hit with fire, tornadoes and earthquakes. On August 18 th, our Brother Knight, Tarry Hoskins will be speaking at our social meeting about a ministry based at St.Edna s. The ministry used to be called the Disaster Assistance Ministry but has been renamed the Development Assistance Ministry. The ministry has repurposed itself and aligned with Habitat for Humanity. Please come out and hear about the great work they are doing and volunteer opportunities available to the group. Here is a list of some of the Knights leading committees in our council. Chaplain s Report While May is the month in which we venerate and crown our Blessed Mother as the Queen of Heaven, on August 15 we also recognize a very important date in the history of our salvation, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the day in which we as Catholic Christians celebrate the belief that God assumed the Virgin Mary into Heaven, body and soul following her death. We believe that she is now in the presence of our God and through our prayers and devotion to her, she intercedes on our behalf to her son our Lord Jesus Christ. As Knights we have a particular devotion to Mary, Our Lord s mother and his first disciple. She is the exemplar and model of all motherhood and discipleship and is held in highest adorations for her willingness to hear, listen and answer God s call. Our Gospel for this day is from Luke 1:39-56. It begins with Mary s travelling to her cousin Elizabeth and concluding with the Magnificat also known as the Canticle of Mary. This particular prayer is said every evening by all who pray the Liturgy of the Hours and it tells of God s power, mercy and love for us all. Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers to Abraham and his children forever. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
