When we think about things we wish we had more of, these two might be near the top of the list. In fact, we have entire industries devoted to maximizing the use of time and space, marketed with the promise of more orderly and efficient lives. However, besides being sometimes troubling borderlines of our earthly existence, what ultimately is the point of these foundational realities? When a poor couple took the time to walk into the lively space of the temple with their infant son over two millennia ago, the Gospel writer does not relate that many people took notice. No doubt there were those present who were in something of a hurry, hoping to move on to the next part of their plan for the day; and perhaps there were others who found the place crowded, and were fixated on that. But at least two persons present saw time and space as more than frustrating limits to be strained against or commodities to be utilized. Named as Simeon and Anna, they were living out the same answer to the question of what time and space are really for and their answer was not a what but a who. For both time and space are ultimately meant to be filled with the incarnate presence of God, who steals among us in hidden glory that manifests to eyes filled with faithful longing. The temple was meant to be the place where this truth was made explicit, as the space was dedicated to acts of worship and the time ordered around these acts, yet few seemed capable of recognizing the fulfillment of this purpose in the person of the infant Jesus. As the new year starts, let us pray to live more like Simeon and Anna, looking not so much for the maximal manipulation of time and space, but instead seeking the coming of Christ in every moment and place which we move through.
