BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk Over the past number of weeks, we had a number of companies come in to see what could be done, and what might be done, to restore the Church to its original splendor. In listening to any number of suggestions, mainly from the older parishioners (who recall what the Church looked like before the renovation of the 1970 s), I decided to look through many pictures, that have been stored, in the Rectory. I found a picture that was taken in 1895 just before the dedication of the Church. It looks nothing like what we see today. Actually, you might not know this but there was an earlier renovation, of the Church, sometime between 1938 and 1942. It was during this earlier renovation that the original high altar, was taken out and the Baldacchino was put up to cover an altar that was placed under it. Where today you see a wall tapestry hanging behind the tabernacle, there use to be a door where the priest would enter and leave the sanctuary. In the original painting over the high altar, there was no chalice and host (in the middle), but rather a monstrance. Even the figures, around the monstrance, were different than what appeared later. Where the paintings of Saints Peter and Paul are today, in the sanctuary, there were paintings of angels. In the original picture (from 1895), to the pictures taken after the first renovation (1938-1942), you can see that so much has changed. If you were to compare the 1895 picture to the renovation of the early 1970 s, you would say that you were standing in a different Church building. As I spoke to the different people who came, I told them that I would like to restore what we can. I would like to see the marble floor, in the sanctuary come alive again, to see some of the original paintings, that have been covered over for the last forty or fifty years, and the cleaning of the ceiling so that we can see the original stencil work, that was placed on them in 1895. Those who came have all gone back to their places of business, to see what they can come up with. They all took many, many pictures of the inside of the Church. We scanned and sent them many old pictures taken during the years the Church has been open. Let s see what they come up with. We Need to Update our Census Information PAGE TWO We have come to realize, like that of many parishes, our census information is way out of date. Just to give a couple of examples, of situations, that have happened within the last month: A parishioner left a book (with their name printed on it) in the Church. We looked them up in our census information. Even though they have been here for years they never registered; and therefore we had no way of contacting them to tell them we had the book. Only many days later, did she come to the Rectory, asking if anyone had turned it in. Another example: A parishioner dropped a loose check in the collection but is was unsigned. The check only had their name printed on it. We looked them up in our records and yes, they were registered so we called the number we had. That number was no good. So, we then mailed it, to them, and received the envelope back saying no longer at that address. This has been happening more often than not. Many people think they are registered parishioners, but are not. Please do not equate receiving offertory envelopes with being a registered parishioner. We have many people, who are registered, but don't want to receive church envelopes. It is important that you update your Church registration information. You can come into the Rectory and fill out a new census form or you can even call Teresa (our Office Manager) and she will be happy to send you a new form; and you can drop off the completed information, in the collection basket, or bring it to the Rectory. When You Are On Vacation When you are on vacation, don't take a vacation away from the Lord. You can always find a Catholic Church at www.masstimes.org

The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15 There is no greater command, from Jesus himself, than to go out and proclaim the gospel. This is not a task left to bishops, priests, deacons and religious; it is a command given to all Christians. There is no more important ministry than proclaiming the gospel and transmitting the faith, particularly to the younger generations. Here at Blessed Sacrament, as in each parish within the Archdiocese of New York, we have a comprehensive religious education program. This program exists, to pass on the Faith, to the youth of our parish. Without this passing on, of the Faith, there will be no Church, in the future. Our program needs your help. Firstly, we need your prayers. Secondly, we need dedicated people to volunteer to answer the call of the Lord. We need people who are willing to spend quality time, with our children, teaching them and guiding them, in the faith. We need people who are willing, to take the time, to deepen their own faith; so they may more effectively pass along their faith to the future generations of believers. I will not lie to you; the task may not be easy; it will take dedication and conviction but, the rewards are far greater than the efforts. If you are ready to answer the call from Our Lord, to proclaim the gospel, please contact the Rectory. Leave your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. We will contact you. We need teachers, teachers aides and class mothers. Have no fear, we will train you. Thank you, and may God bless you. PAX Deacon Frank Orlando Director of Religious Education Blessed Sacrament Parish Name: Address: Telephone: E-mail Address: Please Print Clearly PAGE THREE Music Notes for this Weekend Prelude: [provided by substitute] Opening Hymn: number 488 There s a Wideness in God s Mercy Offertory Hymn: number 431 Seek Ye First Communion Hymn: number 349 I Am the Bread of Life Closing Hymn: number 591 Let All Things Now Living Postlude: [provided by substitute] Mr. Wolfe is away this weekend, at a previously scheduled event, in which one of his music teachers is being honored. As we have a history, so do hymns. Do you ever wonder where a particular hymn comes from and who wrote it? Take for instance the opening hymn of the Mass this weekend: There s a Wideness in God s Mercy. This hymn was written by Father Frederick Faber (1814-1863), who was born in Yorkshire, England. Originally an Anglican priest, he converted to the Roman Catholic Faith in 1845 and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest shortly thereafter. Father Faber began a religious community which eventually joined the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. This community moved to London and eventually started, what is known today as, the Brompton Oratory. As a Catholic priest Father Faber wrote about 150 hymns. Besides the hymn that we will sing today, one of his most famous hymns would be: Faith of Our Fathers. Originally, in our opening hymn today, there were eight verses but it eventually expanded to thirteen. Can you imagine us singing thirteen verses of a hymn? There would probably be nobody in the Church leaving the priest all alone singing away. What is the hymn about? C. Michael Hawn writes: The ultimate theme of this hymn is based on the premise and paradox that a sovereign God, unlike earthly rulers, demonstrates welcome, kindness, grace and mercy. All we need to do is have a simple faith that rests upon God s word. There s a Wideness in God s Mercy Like the wideness of the sea; There s a kindness in God s justice Which is more than liberty.

July 24, 2016 Registration for Religious Education Classes for Children It is important that every child, in our Parish, have a firm and complete knowledge, of the Roman Catholic Faith. The Blessed Sacrament Religious Education Program is currently accepting re-registrations and new registrations for students, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade, for the school year 2016-2017. You can find registration forms in the back of the Church or for more information, please call the Religious Education Office at (914) 235-7311, Monday to Thursday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Se Habla Espanol. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Are you an adult, who has been attending Blessed Sacrament Church, but are not a Roman Catholic? Do you know a family member, neighbor or friend who has expressed a desire to become a Roman Catholic but does not know how to go about it? Are you a person who was Baptized in the Roman Catholic Church but never received any other Sacrament? Then, the R.C.I.A. (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is for you and for them. What is the R.C.I.A.? It is a series of instructions that begin in late September and end with the reception of the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter Sunday). Who can join the R.C.I.A.? Any person who has not been baptized, anyone baptized a Catholic but never received any other sacrament, or anyone who was baptized into another religion but now desires to be a Roman Catholic. When are the classes held? They will be held on Saturday mornings and will last for just over an hour. Of course, attendance at Sunday Mass will also be a requirement for those who desire to become a Roman Catholic. What do you need to do in order to join this class? Please contact Father Luciano. Why not learn about the Faith and be Baptized/Received into the Roman Catholic Church? PAGE FOUR Welcome into the Catholic Church We welcome into the Roman Catholic Church those infants and young children who have been baptized here at Blessed Sacrament during May 2016 (more will follow in next week s bulletin). When the priest says: The Body of Christ, we immediately respond: Amen and then, if receiving in the hand, we place Our Lord immediately into our mouth. We do not turn and walk away with the Blessed Sacrament. We do not make the sign of the Cross with the Blessed Sacrament, in our hand, and we do not raise the Blessed Sacrament up in the air.
