Some Thoughts on the Sidra BY BARRY COLMAN In terms of content, this week s parsha is one of the most dramatic. We have Avraham recovering from his Brit, the visiting of the three angels to Avraham s tent, the prophecy of Yitschak being born, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Yitschak s birth, Yishmael being banished and the Akeidah. However, I would like to focus on one of the smaller characters of the narrative, Avimelech. At that time Avimelech and Phichol, chief of his troops, said to Avraham, God is with you in everything that you do. Therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my children and grandchildren, but will deal with me and with the land in which you have sojourned as loyally as I have dealt with you. (Bereishit 21:22-23) After Hagar and Yishmael are banished from Avraham s home, Avimelech approaches Avraham trying to broker a peace treaty. Earlier in the sedra Avimelech, believing that Sara was Avraham s sister, took Sara to be his wife. God explained to Avimelech that she was indeed Avraham s wife and that if he did not return her, he would be punished by death. Avimelech, a pious man, took great offense to this and confronted Avraham over his lie. The narrative ends with them parting on good terms and Avraham and Saras being blessed with a baby boy - Yitschak. However, after knowing each other for so many years, why would Avimelech suddenly reappear in the story, somewhat threatened by Avraham? The banishment of Yishmael had seemingly made Avimelech anxiously realise that he had previously underestimated Avraham. Until this point, Avimelech had thought of Avraham as a slave to his inherent trait of kindness. He believed that Avraham, even for the sake of standing up for his rights, was incapable of exhibiting harshness. In fact, Avraham was a ba al chesed, a master of his kindness, who was in complete control of his characteristics and emotions. But how do we determine if someone is a slave to their emotions? When a situation arises which requires one to perform an act that runs contrary to his natural temperament, but he is able to overcome his nature, he demonstrates that he is in control of his emotions. If he cannot act against his natural tendencies, we may conclude that he is a slave to his emotions. Learning that Avraham had banished Hagar and Yishmael, Avimelech was shocked. Never had he thought Avraham was capable of such an act. Realising that Avraham was not the walkover he previously believed him to be, Avimelech quickly set out to establish a pact of peace with him. VAYERA STATISTICS Mitzvot: None of the 613 Mitzvot Verses: 147 (7th longest of the 54 Sidrot) Words: 2085 (2nd longest) Letters: 7862 (3rd longest) Haftarah: 37 verses (8th longest of the 80 Haftarot) Vayera is effectively the second longest Sidra of the Torah (it has unusually long verses). Today s Revii is the 2nd longest of the Torah. Page No. SONCINO HERTZ ARTSCROLL Sidra 86 63 78 Haftarah 113 76 1134

Vienna-rsary Waltz Kinloss tours are a great way to learn with, learn about and learn from the community. On Sunday and Monday, we enjoyed a memorable excursion to Eisenstadt and Vienna; cities of distinguished Rabbonim, Jewish financiers, writers, thinkers, musicians; of magnificent art, music and culture; notorious, too, for its anti- Semitism. The medallion pictured marks the 1782 Edict of Tolerance enacted by Emperor Joseph II. The previous year his Patent of Toleration granted religious freedom to Lutherans, Calvinists and the Serbian Orthodox, allowing them into previously restricted jobs and to have religious congregations of up to 100. The 1782 Edict aims at making the Jewish population useful to the State, allowed Jews to attend schools and universities, learn and apprentice in some trades, removed some taxes and the need for distinctive Jewish clothing. A further requirement was the downgrading of all Yiddish and Hebrew in official documents. (Quasi autonomous Jewish communities had maintained their own official records.) His mother was worse! Maria Theresa, Queen of Austria and arch-duchess of Hungary and Bohemia had expelled the Jews from the lands she had inherited in 1744 and writing in 1777, I know of no greater plague than this race, which on account of its deceit, usury and avarice is driving my subjects into beggary. The British Lord Chancellor, Philip Yorke, 1 st Earl of Hardwicke joined other European leaders, pressurised by their own Court Jews and financiers, who urged Maria Theresa to exercise restraint. Representations were even made by three of the seven electors, who would appoint her husband Francis Stephen as Holy Roman Emperor that September. Hardwicke, himself, was a supporter of the 1753 Jewish Naturalisation Act, (allowing English Jews to become naturalised by application to Parliament), passed in July 53 but repealed in 1754 after an outburst of local antisemitism. It would be another century It was not until 1846 that the Jews of England were legally emancipated by the Religious Opinions Relief Act; and Jews were only allowed to take a seat in Parliament by the Jewish Relief Act of 1858. At the time, Benjamin Disraeli, who had been baptised at the age of 12, served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Both Acts had been hard fought and not easily passed. This week we commemorate a century since the Balfour Declaration. It is worth reflecting that with all the contribution and prominence of Jewish leaders from Cromwell s time onwards, at the time of the Balfour Declaration, England s Jews had only enjoyed full equality for less than sixty years. Certainly, the Declaration reflects colonial attitudes, and was forged at a time where the disposal of foreign lands was a part of the diplomatic game. Nevertheless, it was a remarkable milestone, scarcely within the realm of Jewish imagination, that recognition was being accorded to the Jews as a people, not a plague and to Jewish national aspirations. Once barred from holding land wherever they lived, the Balfour Declaration would pave the way to a new Jewish Land. We shall be marking this historical anniversary in shul this Shabbat. Thanks again, to all the volunteers and supporters, who helped to make Shabbat UK such a success. Please do join us for the new Beit Midrash Programme on Monday, Lunch & Learn, Wednesday 12:15pm and my interview with Claude Littner next Wednesday evening at 8pm. Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence
