Holy Trinity June 15, 2014 5 Bulletin Building Blocks - Most Holy Trinity TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The liturgy seems reluctant to return to Ordinary Time from the joys of Easter, and so the festivities extend to today s celebration of the mystery of God s relationship to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Gospel today centers the question of our relationship with God in the struggle of Nathaniel to believe that it is possible to experience rebirth in the Spirit. The answer of Jesus is that God s response to the messes of this world is the mystery of saving love in Jesus Christ and the outpouring of an empowering Spirit. Western church architecture often tops a church building with a spire, indicating humanity s reach to a transcendent God. The Eastern Church responds with onion shaped domes, indicating the Spirit s being poured down upon humanity precisely at this locale, the gathering of the faithful for the Divine Liturgy. This familiar design encodes a great mystery: here, at the Lord s table, we experience the outpouring of the Spirit for the life of the world. Nathaniel came to Jesus by night, since he was still working out the meaning of his life. A life attuned to the inner life of the Trinity must always be given to the light of day. Rev. Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 Baby Bottle Project BOTTLES DUE TODAY! Beginning on Mothers Day and continuing through Fathers Day, our church participates in the Baby Bottle Project, benefitting the Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing and monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year, the three locations together have over 5000 appointments with expectant mothers. By God s grace, the Women s Centers have saved over 33,000 babies and their mothers from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Bottle home with you, fill it with your spare change, and return it to church the weekend of June 15. Thank You! Happy Fathers Day! God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless all men, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Men and Cancer In the United States, we celebrate Father s Day in June, which is also Men s Health Awareness Month. For many men and their families, healthy living and wellness is an ongoing concern. One significant fear is cancer, something that claims hundreds of thousands of lives each year in the United States alone. For men, the most common cancers are those of the prostate, lungs, colon and skin. Several effective screenings exist, but the American Cancer Society does not recommend that every man undergo routine screening for all of these conditions. Instead, men should have a conversation with their doctors about whether testing is appropriate for them given their age, the state of their health and their family histories. Early detection improves a man s chances of survival and may reduce the need for invasive and painful therapies. However, many men delay speaking to their doctors about symptoms that may point to cancer. Some do this out of fear and some because they believe they should man-up and ignore their pain and discomfort. In addition, some men may not have a relationship with a primary care physician or any health care professional. Even those that do may put off or forgo regular checkups, missing opportunities for health counseling and, if necessary, tests that can detect cancer. Both types of inaction can lead to unnecessary suffering, worsening conditions and even death. Taking good care of himself is one way a father or grandfather shows his family how much he loves them. Setting an appointment for a long-overdue check-up is the first step and a lovely gift a father can give on Father s Day.

Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him. Psalm 103:13 Today we celebrate and honor fathers & the men in our lives who have been our mentors and role models: a grandfather, godfather, uncle, brother, foster father, special friend, St. Joseph the father of Jesus and Our Father in heaven. For their love, generous spirit, kindness and patience, we thank God! We also pray for the best gifts of all joy, safety and hope for the future without violence in our relationships, our community and our streets. Are you in an abusive relationship? Are you ever afraid of your partner? Does your partner threaten to hurt you? Does your partner control all the money? Has your partner ever pushed or shoved you, thrown things at you or forced you to have sex? Does you partner prevent you from seeing or talking with family & friends? Do you try to please your partner rather than yourself to avoid being hurt? If you said yes to one or more of these questions, you may be a victim of domestic violence. If we remain silent, we allow domestic violence This Father s Day, please pledge across the Archdiocese. I will: End the silence on domestic violence Be violent free in all my relationships Educate myself, my family and my children about healthy relationships. Marriage Encounter Happy Fathers Day to all the fathers in our parish! Wives, give your husbands the greatest gift of all, the gift of your love on a Marriage Encounter Weekend.
