The Bap sm of the Lord January 11, 2015 Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton, Bishop of Belleville We, the people of St. Clare Catholic Parish, In the Diocese of Belleville, are called by God in baptism to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Centered in the Eucharist, and strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we strive to live the Gospel and further the reign of God. We do this by creating a vibrant faith community, by actively promoting justice and evangelization, and by using our gifts in the service of God s people, to give God glory and reverence all of Creation. From Our Pastor... It was so great to see so many visitors at the Masses over the Christmas Season of the past three weeks. I am especially energized when I see the college kids back as well as young adults coming back to their home parish to see family. How wonderful that several of our college students still volunteer to be Altar servers when they return for their school break. A good number of our high school students remain active as acolytes, cantors, ushers, and Eucharistic Ministers as well. This is mostly due to their parents who engrained in their children the value of staying involved in the parish and being an active part of Mass in their earlier years. I am SO grateful for those parents who see their vital role as models of stewardship in being involved themselves and strongly encouraging their children to choose at least one ministry at Mass in which to be active. Parents underestimate the influence they have on their children in the practice of their faith. At St. Clare we work hard at including young people in our liturgies and other ministries. When you see them taking part, please make time to thank them and their parents for using their gifts for the glory of God! It is never too late to start getting involved if you are not already. Check out our website for ministry contact info or call the office if you or your children want to start sharing your time and talent for a parish ministry. We can always use more help and you are an important part of this parish. God s Peace on your New Year, Fr. Jim Deiters Recent Deaths: Joan Cavins, Wife of Ron, Mother of Jim (Patty) Cavins Virginia Kennett, Mother of Bonnie Brave May they rest in the peace and love of Christ. May their memories and our prayers bring these families comfort. We continue to pray for all who have died and all who are mourning the death of a loved one. The Best New Years Resolu on: Live Our Bap sm In today s Scripture readings, Jesus affirms that Bap sm is necessary for salva on. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us the two principal effects of Bap sm are purifica on from sins and new birth in the Holy Spirit. (CCC 1262). We become a new creature, an adopted son or daughter of God, a member of the Body of Christ, and a temple of the Holy Spirit. A er all the indulging of spending and ea ng over the holidays, January seems the ideal me to resolve to diet, create a budget, and exercise more. But our scripture readings today call us to a greater purifica on and discipline: to become be er disciples of Christ through our Bap sm. Whether we were bap zed Catholic or another Chris an denomina on, what does the Catholic faith offer us in our resolve to become who God calls us to be? In this inspiring presenta on, Why Be Catholic?, bestselling author Patrick Madrid gives compelling biblical and historical reasons for why he embraces the faith as a lifelong Catholic. He shares valuable insights into the beauty of the Catholic Church and its claim to contain the fullness of the deposit of faith given Christ. Enlightening and relevant, this talk is great for both Catholics and non-catholics. James J. Ramacciotti Our parish captain is John Durnford (501)425-4506 or jpdford@charter.net Theology, philosophy, and science all speak of a harmonious universe, of a "cosmos" endowed with its own integrity, its own internal, dynamic balance. THIS ORDER MUST BE RESPECTED. The human race is called to explore this order, to examine it with due care and to make use of it while safeguarding its integrity. On the other hand, the earth is ul mately A COMMON HERITAGE, THE FRUITS OF WHICH ARE FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL. In the words of the Second Va can Council, "God des ned the earth and all it contains for the use of every individual and all peoples" (Gaudium et Spes, 69). This has direct consequences for the problem at hand. It is manifestly unjust that a privileged few should con nue to accumulate excess goods, squandering available resources, while masses of people are living in condi ons of misery at the very lowest level of subsistence. Today, the drama c threat of ecological breakdown is teaching us the extent to which greed and selfishness both individual and collec ve are contrary to the order of crea- on, an order which is characterized by mutual interdependence.
