The word genesis means beginning. The Book of Genesis also tells about the beginning of God s relationship with people and of His chosen people, the Israelites. BFP: 11 1. God s Word Creates Have you ever created anything? Perhaps you ve helped your mother make cookies. Maybe you ve created a pretty picture to hang on the refrigerator. This kind of creation is not the same as the way God created the world. When we create things, like cookies or pictures, we use ingredients or tools. For example, we cannot create cookies out of nothing; we need to have flour, eggs, and sugar. God did not need anything to start His creation. He created the whole universe out of nothing but His Word. Hebrews 11:3 says, By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. This means God spoke the words, and the universe came into existence. Before God spoke, there was nothing but God. BFP: 24, 311 2. The Earth is Formless and Ready In Genesis 1:2 it says, Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. What does it mean to be formless? Think about a lump of clay before it is made into something. The clay is a lump not shaped into anything. This can give us an idea of what the earth was like when God s Spirit hovered over it. At this point, there is no light. There is no sun or moon. There is no air. There are no plants or people. The world is empty. But the formless earth is ready to receive God s Word and become what He has planned for it. BFP: 397 3. The Trinity in Creation All three members of the Trinity God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit were present at creation and had a part in it. God the Holy Spirit hovered over the empty, formless earth, ready for God to begin His creation. God spoke the Word, and the Word did what God said. God said, Let there be light, and there was light. God said, Let there be plants and animals, and the plants and animals came into being. Colossians 1:16 says, For by him [Jesus] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth. In John 1:1 we learn that God the Son Jesus is the Word that God spoke who brought everything into being. BFP: 311, 318, 397
