Parish Christmas Giving Tree Last year, thanks to your love and generosity, we donated over 1,000 gifts and over $2,000 in gift cards to families and children in need in our community and beyond. The Christmas Giving Tree will be in the Church and Walsh Hall beginning Thanksgiving weekend. The tree will be adorned with the gift requests and wishes of those who rely on help during the Christmas season. This year, we have received a request for Gift Cards to various stores in the amount of $25. While a gift card may not be the most fun gift to give, they are great ways to help out families at Christmas time. They allow parents to buy more personal items for their children (underwear, etc) and items for their homes (appliances, bedding, etc). They also allow teenagers and young adults to purchase things that fit their unique styles and tastes. We ask that you again be as generous as possible to help make Christmas a wonderful time for these children, teenagers and adults in need. Helping those in need is simple, but very much appreciated: 1. Take a tag from the tree, 2. Purchase the requested gift (gifts should be new), 3. For Groups 1, 2, 3: Wrap the gift and secure the tag to the outside, so that we can get it to the appropriate person. If it is a gift card, please be sure to put the amount on it. For Groups 4 and 5: Please return gifts unwrapped in a bag with the tag inside. Gift cards should be sealed in an envelope with the tag inside. 4. Return the gift to the church by Friday, December 15, to allow time for sorting and delivery. This year your kindness will help children and adults from the following agencies: 1. Adopt-a-Family of Nutley - Bells 2. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark - Snowmen 3. Children in Foster Care Blue Ornaments 4. York Street Project of Jersey City - Mittens 5. Covenant House, New Jersey Red Stockings 656 Page 3

Today is the final part of a four week series. Each segment has looked at the last Sundays in ordinary time from the perspective of today's gospel. Prior to writing this last segment I clarified my reasoning for being so focused on Matthew s account of the last judgement. Part of the appeal is Matthew himself. The literal title of his day job (tax collector) might not have much cache. But reframe it to he works in finance or call him a numbers man and he suddenly Matthew takes on an importance more in line with the stories he tells. Today s gospel is a case in point. Matthew is the only evangelist to include this story in his gospel account. I am intrigued as to why the compilers of the lectionary chose this gospel to stand next to the gospels for the other 2 years readings for Christ the King: cycle b: Jesus being questioned by Pontius Pilate (John 18:33b-37) cycle c. The Crucifixion (Luke 25:35-43.) Lastly, it might be the wisdom or sense of urgency that comes with maturity (ok...age.) What about you? Perhaps you as I: are tempted to ask Jesus when we saw him hungry, thirsty, imprisoned etc.. find his response to be equally sobering. feel a sense of relief for more time and a chance to do better. Today's music points to the reality of Christ as King of all; particularly the least, the last and the lost; those whom the world overlooks but who are sheep in the eyes of the Lamb of God, the Good Shepherd. Particularly blessed and grateful this Thanksgiving, Remembrance Board We are collecting pictures for our memory boards to be placed in the church during the month of November. To have your deceased loved ones included: Place a photograph in the basket at the main doors of the church. Be sure to put your name and contact info so we can return the photo to you. 656 Page 5
