Commander s Message Dear Santa, I know that you are very busy this time of year but I wanted to give you a brief update on the Squadron. 18 of our members were awarded merit marks for the past year. If you would be so kind would you please double check your NICE list to make sure all of the following were included: Ken and Reyna, Al, Don and Cheryl, Nat, Bob R., Kayenta, Millie, Hal, Deborah and Kristi, Marv, Jay, Stephen, George, John and Ray. Since you have some time off coming up I would like to invite you and Mrs. Claus to be my guest at our Annual Meeting on January 23 and our Change of Watch on February 20. Since both will be held at the DeBell golf course starting at noon you can bring the reindeer as well to forage on the beautiful grounds and start training for next year. Since we live in California please ask Jack Frost to stay home at the North Pole to keep tabs on things there while you are away. Ray is still working to get his Sea Scout ship up and running. He is looking for new members to form the nucleus of the group. This would be a perfect opportunity for some of your elves to improve their nautical expertise. It could come in hand one day 4

to help you with your travels or start a whole new line of toys in your shop. All they need to do is contact Ray to sign up. One final note we are having a bit of trouble finding members to fill a few of our leadership positions in the squadron for the upcoming watch year. We have several excellent candidates among our membership but they need a little prodding from you to take that first step and say yes. These would include all of those on the above NICE list. In particular, Cheryl, Kayenta, Deborah, and Reyna might give the nod if you were treat them with a few extra sugar plums in their stockings this year. All of these individuals would be superb in the capacity of leaders of the squadron! Best wishes and continued good health for the New Year! Mike J. Michael Kabo,JN mkabo@csun.edu 5

Passings It is with deep sorrow that I report the passing of beloved family members of members of our squadron. Winifred Hoadley passed away on Friday December 11th, her 94th Birthday. She was the mother of Hal Hoadley, mother-in-law of Deborah and grandmother to Kristi. Herbert Breitling passed in November. He was the husband of Sharon Breitling. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to all. 6

Executive Department The (Real) Perfect Storm It was Christmas day 1945 as the members of the 590 field artillery battalion (yours truly included) prepared to board the liberty ship SS Lownsdale. Excitement was high as we were finally on our way home, and we all looked forward to an enjoyable voyage. Of course, we had heard the stories of these liberty ships, which were built on an assembly line, in great haste, had a history of cracking in half, but we did not let it bother us too much. We left the port of Bremerhaven, Germany and proceeded out to the infamous north Atlantic at the rip-roaring speed of 9 knots. After we were out about a day there was a speck on the horizon, which rapidly overtook us, and left us in its wake. It was the aircraft carrier WASP which had been converted to a troop transport, and would probably make the crossing in about 3 days. Those on board the liberty ship had no such hope of such a speedy trip. Our only hope was for a safe voyage. Well - - the next day we ran into one of those storms for which the North Atlantic was famous. When 9

I say there were 30 40 foot waves I m not exaggerating! We plodded along, at times making 2-3 knots. The rails were almost dipping in the water as the spunky little ship wallowed in the trough. Other times it buried its bow in the waves and the prop would rise completely out of the water. Needless to say, it was an exciting trip. After about a day of this pounding the seas calmed down, and we proceeded at our cruising speed with no apparent damage to the ship, and no injuries to the passengers and crew. The kicker is that it was reported to us that the WASP limped into New York harbor with the bow smashed in and the flight deck peeled back from the combination of speed and waves. We arrived in New York harbor on January 10, 1946.. It was probably the slowest crossing I could have imagined 15 days seemed like an eternity. However, when we made landfall and saw the Statue of Liberty, you never saw a happier bunch of warriors. Slow and steady finished the race! LtC Nat Goldberg, AP 10

Education Officer The public boating class is currently ongoing on Tuesday evenings at 7PM throughout December at the Reseda United Methodist Church. At last report the class had 10 students. I encourage members to attend one of the remaining class sessions to recruit these students as members into the squadron. Be sure to check the schedule for upcoming classes and seminars. The SEO can be reached in any of the following ways: Cell: 818-462-6479 Home: 818-996-0243 Email: cscout01@earthlink.net Mailing Address: 17216 Saticoy St. # 373, Van Nuys, CA 91406 Actual Address: 7439 Genesta Ave. Van Nuys, CA 91406 Ray Paul, AP 11

Treasurer s Department At the December Bridge Meeting, the Executive Committee discussed a budget for the 2010 Fiscal Year (2010 2011 Watch) with those Members who were in attendance. Following the discussion, the Executive Committee voted to present the enclosed Budget for your approval at the Annual Meeting. Please note that the Budget does not include a Dues Increase as it was felt that the Squadron Dues Income would be sufficient for continuing operations. Should it become necessary to purchase items such as Teaching Aids or other durable goods, we have sufficient resources that upon approval of the Executive Committee, we can acquire them off Budget. We did not budget either Income or Expenses for the Education Department s boating classes and seminars. These activities are self supporting and do not rely on Dues income to pay for them. The same is true for the Dinner Meetings that we hold. Lt/C Harold W Hoadley, AP Treasurer 12

Proposed Fiscal Year 2010 Budget Summary Income: Dues $810.00 Dinners 75.00 Donations 230.00 Class Fees 200.00 Total $1,315.00 Expenses: Commander $25.00 Education 150.00 Executive 25.00 Administrative 225.00 Secretary 805.00 Treasurer 85.00 Total: $1,315.00 13
