TODAY S SERVICES 8.00 Holy Communion PRESIDENT Canon Andrew Bishop READINGS Daniel 7.9-10, 13-14; Luke 9.28-38 9.45 am Cathedral Eucharist PRESIDENT The Very Reverend Dianna Gwilliams HYMN 2 COLLECT Heavenly Father, whose Son Jesus Christ was wonderfully transfigured before chosen witnesses upon the holy mountain, and spoke of the exodus he would accomplish at Jerusalem: grant us strength so to hear his voice and bear our cross that in the world to come we may behold him as he is; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen OLD TESTAMENT READING Daniel 7.9-10, 13-14 read by Jacob Smart As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousand served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgement, and the books were opened. As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. PSALM 97 1 The Lord is King, the earth may be glad thereof: yea, the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof. 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgement are the habitation of his seat. 3 There shall go a fire before him: and burn up his enemies on every side. 4 His lightnings gave shine unto the world: the earth saw it, and was afraid. 5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord: at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6 The heavens have declared his righteousness: and all the people have seen his glory. 7 Confounded be all they that worship carved images, and that delight in vain gods: worship him, all ye gods. 8 Sion heard of it, and rejoiced: and the daughters of Judah were glad, because of thy judgements, O Lord. 9 For thou, Lord, art higher than all that are in the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods. 10 O ye that love the Lord, see that ye hate the thing which is evil: the Lord preserveth the souls of his saints; he shall deliver them from the hand of the ungodly. 11 There is sprung up a light for the righteous: and joyful gladness for such as are true-hearted. 12 Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous: and give thanks for a remembrance of his holiness. NEW TESTAMENT READING 2 Peter 1.16-19 read by Rachel Impey For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. HYMN 248 GOSPEL READING Luke 9.28-39 The Holy Gospel is written in the ninth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke, beginning at the twenty eighth verse. Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just

as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah - not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him! When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. Just then a man from the crowd shouted, Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child. Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. There, above noise and danger, sweet peace sits crowned with smiles, and One born in a manger commands the beauteous files. He is thy gracious Friend, and - O my soul, awake! - did in pure love descend, to die here for thy sake.

If thou canst get but thither, thee grows the flower of peace, the rose that cannot wither thy fortress and thy ease. Leave then thy foolish ranges, for none can thee secure but one who never changes, thy God, thy life, thy cure. NOTICEBOARD Flowers in the Cathedral Thank you to Susan Mandeville for the beautiful flowers in the Cathedral this week. Lectio Divina This group will be taking a break during August and will resume on Sunday 3rd September at 08.45 in the Library. Lectio offers an informal opportunity to reflect on scripture together in a contemplative way leading into discussion and prayer and each session lasts for 15 minutes. There is no commitment to attend every session; all are welcome to drop in. Thank you to Canon Andrew A huge thank you to Andrew as he concludes his interim role as Acting Precentor. In the past 10 months he has juggled a heavy workload in that capacity whilst also continuing as Anglican Chaplain at the University of Surrey. We are grateful to the Vice-Chancellor for enabling the arrangement and to Andrew for managing to combine two full time posts so effectively and with such good humour. Stuart, as Sub Dean, will continue as Acting Precentor until we welcome our new Canon Liturgist in early November. The Precentor email box will be monitored and responses will typically take up to three days. If it is an urgent enquiry please contact the Liturgy and Music Administrator, Carolyn Howard-Jones at liturgymusic@guildford-cathedral.org The Reverend Dr Paul Smith Bishop Andrew is pleased to announce that he has invited Paul to become Canon Liturgist here. Paul is currently Rector of Wilmslow and is expected to take up his post in early November. Do pray for him, his wife Magdelen and children Eve and Aidan as they prepare for this next chapter in their journey and for the people and parish of Wilmslow. Sermon blog Canon Julie s and Canon Andrew s sermons can be found on their blogs, http://juliegittoes.blogspot.co.uk and https://canonandrewb.blogspot.co.uk A Week of Guided Prayer - 26 November to 1 December This will be an opportunity to grow and develop in prayer with the help of experienced Prayer Guides. Artists-in-Residence Display South Garth During The People s Cathedral project we have had two artists-in-residence and until August there is a display of work by the Cabinet of Curiosities (Edmund Salter and Caroline Collinge) in the South Garth. They work entirely in paper and so the beautiful pieces are fragile. Please do take some time to see this exquisite work. Coins Scheme An unexpected boost last week from a quantity of philatelic First Day Covers marking various diocesan and Cathedral anniversaries, jubilees and VIP visits. Coins have left us for Poland and Romania. Returns are awaited from Switzerland, Singapore and Hong Kong. Total: 15,830. Many thanks to all our helpers. The group begins at 16.00, prior to Evensong at 18.00.
