WELCOME TO September 24, 2006 43 Gebhardt Road, Penfield, NY 14526 Office: 586-8089 www.stjosephspenfield.org Fax Line: 586-0674 Parish Mission Statement: As disciples of Christ: We are a faith community who are evangelized and evangelize others by being a living example of His love. We are a prayerful people, empowered by the Holy Spirit wholeheartedly engaged in the Sacramental life of the Church. We are a vital spiritual community who make use of the gifts and talents to learn and grow in His ways and to reach out in love and respect to others. SPIRITUAL RENEWAL Spiritual Renewal is what we are about as a faith community. We seek to come to know the Lord Jesus more deeply in our lives. We seek continuously to give thanks to God whose love for us is without end. We are Gospel people. We seek to discover the mystery of God s love in the ways that we reach out in the service of one another. Spiritual renewal weekend Next weekend September 29 and 30 th Friday Evening 7:00 pm till 9:00 pm Saturday 8:30 am till the 5:00 pm Mass & Pot Luck Supper to follow. Location: Here at St Joseph s Church Retreat Director Dr. Damain Zynda Renewal Theme: Christian Community as a Path to Spiritual Renewal I will be present and fully participate in these 24 hours with the Lord. I invite you to make this commitment as well. I would suggest that as a faith community our priority needs to be spiritual renewal. May our parish mantra this year be: If we are too busy to pray, we are too busy. The message is all of us need to make time for prayer in our very busy lives. Please know that if you are available only for a part of this retreat time, you are still most welcome. Our retreat director is the director of Faith Formation at the Church of the Transfiguration in Pittsford. She is a gifted speaker who knows the Lord in her own life and has a wonderful capacity to help us to get to know the Lord more deeply in our lives. This time of spiritual renewal would be valuable for anyone in our parish community. ALL ARE WELCOME. For those of us who belong to a small Christian community, this retreat provides the spiritual grounding for what we are about as a small Christian community. Consider this time of spiritual renewal as the spiritual framework of what we are about. For those of us who are participating in the JUST FAITH small Christian community, this will serve as our initial retreat. I hope to see you this Friday evening in Church a good place for us to gather to celebrate the Lord s presence among us. See you in Church. Page Three St. Joseph s Church, Penfield, New York September 24, 2006 Parish Pastoral Council Update The Parish Pastoral Council aims to serve the entire parish community in a spirit of dialogue and collaboration. We began our first meeting on September 11 with a spiritually uplifting evening prayer service. We will continue the process of prayerful reflection as we consider goals for the coming year. All are encouraged to contact any member of the Council, or a staff member, to provide input on how we can best serve the parish community. We are looking for input concerning the diocesan suggestion that all contributors to the Catholic Ministries Appeal be published in the parish bulleting (without referencing dollar amounts). Please contact any Council members listed below. A brief summary of the minutes of the September Council meeting is published here. The full minutes, along with the agenda, can be accessed on the website at www.stjosephspenfield.org/pastoralcouncil or by contacting Eleanor in the office at 586-8089 for a hard copy. The highlights from the September 11 meeting were: Feedback from summer listening sessions Discussion of the posture during the Liturgy of the Eucharist Update on the Thanksgiving Appeal, now named Catholic Ministries Appeal. Page Six St. Joseph s Church, Penfield, New York September 24, 2006 More of What s New at St. Joe s ST. JOSEPH S MUSIC MINISTRY 2006-2007 Matt Curlee, director of music As we continually strive to enhance the vibrancy and richness of our worship together, we naturally look to the many talented volunteer ministers that lead our music week after week as choir members, cantors, and instrumentalists. But their generous ministry is fully realized only when the true choir of St. Joseph s raises its voice in full participation and that is every one of us, regardless of our level of skill! Musical worship is the work of every member of the assembly, and in order to more fully support our congregational song, we will be moving to a new hardcover hymnal called Gather Comprehensive II beginning with the 2007 liturgical year in Advent. Gather Comprehensive is widely considered to be the premiere hymnal available to Catholic parishes today in terms of selection and quality, containing over 850 hymns, songs, and pieces of liturgical/ritual music...many of our old favorites, plus a rich selection of new repertoire with which to grow over the coming years. Under our reprint license, we ll print a supplement to the hymnal which will include the small number of our St. Joseph s favorites that are not in the new hymnal. In addition to providing a much more comprehensive and permanent collection of music to enrich our liturgies, moving to a hymnal turns out to be a wise stewardship of financial resources as well. While a hardcover hymnal does cost about three times as much as one of our current music issues, we will use them for ten years or more, so the ten-year cost to the parish is one third the current cost of replacing the songbooks every Advent. We would like to offer the opportunity for parishioners and families to give the gift of a hymnal (or several) in honor of or as a memorial to a loved one. These beautiful hardcover books (which include the Sunday readings in a section in the back) cost $14.25 apiece, and will be fitted with a bookplate acknowledging the donor and memorial. Please contact the office at 586-8089 if you are interested in donating a book. YES, I WOULD LIKE TO DONATE A HYMNAL. Page Seven St. Joseph s Church, Penfield, New York September 24, 2006 A Very Catholic Conversation Issue 7 FAITH FORMATION NEWS I continue to encourage people to look at the web site that supports our classroom text series. Go to www.faithfirst.com and take a look at the resources. The conversation that is education can take place in other places than the classroom. Here at Saint Joseph we have a number of small groups that meet. This began with Purpose Driven Life and continues now in the third year with groups meeting to reflect on Christian Readings, Scripture study Groups some using the Little Rock Series, and two groups looking at Just Faith. There are other groups that take up different topics each time they meet. This is all part of the fancy words that we call lifelong faith formation. As I said a few weeks ago I believe that it is education when there is information that leads to formation that allows for transformation. One of the dangers of the older Catechism approaches to Catholic School and CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) formation was we made it sounds like it could all be reduced to a memorized list of answers over a fixed period of time. But the Catholic schools and the Confraternity were meant to be more than that. They were there to assist the family and to strengthen the community. There was a sense of linkage and community. To some degree, over the years the linkage fade and the message became we can take care of all the education here and in this fixed 8 or 12 year period. Some of that may have been a result that when the Church was in cities it often was a tight knit neighborhood and as we move out to rural and suburban places that was lost a little and there was room to step aside and open a gate that might not have meant to be opened or kept open so long. Today we are trying to restore the emphasis on connectedness to family and to the households of our lives. So from our classrooms to our family program to those in home study and the adults in small and large groups we are trying to be the learning church that Jesus invited his apostles and disciples to, on the journey to the new Jerusalem. We are the hope for tomorrow and the promise of a new day today and we can all learn more about our faith and our scripture and our tradition. Again I invite questions and conversation at; fox@stjosephspenfield.org Peace for Now, Patrick F.I.R.E/ BRANCH.
