THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME From the Pastor s Desk I am so grateful for the opportunity, last weekend, to speak at all the Masses. Some people mentioned to me that they were very surprised at the size of the parish debt. I have written a number of times, in the bulletin, about the debt and how it has risen to almost Twelve million dollars. This debt has accumulated over a period of the past thirty to forty years. However, it is now such a sizable amount that we have to do something to address it. That is why I mentioned about the possibility of the sale of some of the parish property. As I mentioned, no final decisions have been made and we will see what the interest in the property is. Also, I mentioned how our weekly collections do not cover the cost of running the Parish. Last year we had to borrow over Two Hundred Thousand dollars in order to cover our costs. This yearly borrowing, of various amounts, again over the past thirty to forty years, has added to the debt. The Parish needs your help. The Parish needs your generosity in the weekly collections. As I said, last weekend, Blessed Sacrament Parish exists for only one reason: we exist for Jesus. We exist to offer fitting praise and worship to God. Each week in the bulletin I mention the Renew and Rebuild Campaign. As you know we met our goal, just before last Easter, but we need everyone who made a pledge to fulfill it. The Archdiocese has said that no Parish can begin the work they have planned until they have half the money in the bank. At this point we have about one third of the money collected, that was pledged or given as an outright gift. If you have not yet made a gift, or a pledge, to the Blessed Sacrament Renew and Rebuild Campaign you can still do so. If you have already given a gift, and you are able to do another gift, you may also do so. You can see me, or you can fill out one of the donation cards that are in the back of the Church and drop it into the collection basket. Whatever you can do for Blessed Sacrament Parish is greatly appreciated. Finally, people were very surprised when I mentioned how many one dollar bills are dropped in the collection and the response that I receive from the tellers at the bank. Gratefully, this week they did not give me that same response. PAGE TWO Mass and Procession of the Statue of Santo Nino All are invited to attend the Mass in Honor of Santo Nino. The Mass will take place today, Sunday, January 21st at 4:00pm. At the conclusion of the Mass there will be a procession of the statue from the Church to the elementary school where there will be a celebration\fellowship. All are invited to participate in this procession. 2017 Contribution Statement If you would like your Church 2017 Contribution Statement, please call the Rectory Office. We will need your: 1) envelope number, 2) name that is written on the offertory envelope, 3) your exact address, including apartment number, and 4) a phone number where you can be reached if we have difficulty with your record. Once we receive your request, we will do our best to send it to you in a timely manner. There are unfortunately delays that do sometimes happen. Receiving Church Offertory Envelopes Every month, we receive calls or notes from parishioners, who have not received their monthly Church Offering Envelopes in the mail. We do not know why this happens? The envelopes are mailed from a company on Long Island. If someone moves, the company receives the information and notifies us. If you do not receive your Church Envelopes two weeks before the set you have runs out, please let us know and we can send you a temporary set. Unless we hear from you, we do not know. Also, if you would like to receive a set of Offertory envelopes, please call or email us and we will be happy to send you a set.

The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Prayer for Vocations This prayer can be said by a single person or with several people. Leader: Let us ask God to give worthy Priests, Brothers and Sisters, to His Holy Church. Others: O God, we earnestly beseech Thee to bless this archdiocese with many priests, brothers and sisters, who will love Thee with their whole strength and gladly spend their entire lives to serve Thy Church and to make Thee known and loved. Leader: Bless our families, bless our children. Others: Choose from our homes those who are needed for Thy work. Leader: Mary, Queen of the clergy! Others: Pray for us. Pray for our priests and religious. Obtain for us many more. Catholic Teachers in Public Schools The Archdiocesan Catechetical Office is sponsoring an Annual Retreat Day for Catholic Teachers in Public Schools on Saturday, February 3rd from 9:00am to 1:30pm. The day will include a Conference, a Holy Hour and Mass. Refreshments and lunch will be served. This Retreat Day will be held at the Maryknoll Father and Brothers, 55 Ryder Road in Ossining. Registration must be done by January 20th. For more information you can email Zelide.ceccagno@archny.org or call the Regional Catechetical Office at (914) 965-0490. Prayer Vigil for Life The Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of New York is sponsoring a Prayer Vigil for Life at Saint Patrick s Cathedral on January 21st. There will be a Mass at 5:30pm followed by Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Music will be provided by the Sisters of Life. On the eve of the 45th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade, let us unite in prayer: The most powerful force in human history. PAGE THREE Music Notes for this Weekend By John Wolfe, Organist and Music Director Prelude: Recercar Terzo By Girolamo Cavazzoni (c.1525-1577) Opening Hymn: number 463 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Anthem: Thou Wilt Keep Him In Perfect Peace By Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876) Offertory Hymn: number 521 Holy Wisdom, Lamp of Learning Communion Hymn: number 311 As We Gather at Your Table Closing Hymn: number 383 Lord, You Give the Great Commission Postlude: Hymnus Christe Redemptor omnium By Girolamo Cavazzoni (c.1525-1577) One of Girolamo Cavazzoni s important contributions to the organ s literature during the Italian Renaissance was his pioneering work in the genre of the Recercar, a slow-moving and serious form reminding us of the frequent connection between organ and vocal music. The Recercar Terzo, an obscure masterpiece, takes as its basis the Phyrgian mode, a musical scale that would soon fall into disuse with the advent of Major and Minor scales. The Phyrgian mode lacks the clear sense of progression and goal we associate with the Major and Minor systems, giving the music a quality both wandering and prayerful. The dense and overlapping musical texture here is very similar to the choral music of the same period, with individual lines periodically emerging to shine through, rushing forward in spontaneous rhapsodies. Formed There is a great resource that is being offered by the Archdiocese to every parishioner, in every parish. It is called Formed and there is no cost to you. You can watch movies, read books, look at shows and learn about the faith at the same time. All you have to do is go to the website: www.formed.org. Once you have signed up, you are able to access wonderful programming. You will be asked for the parish code for Blessed Sacrament. It is: WGFJ7N (the code is case sensitive).

January 21, 2018 Renew + Rebuild It is so important that those who made pledges fulfill them. Hopefully towards the first part of the year, we will begin work on one of the side aisles. Because of this we have been warning prospective brides, who have called, that at some point during 2018 there will be scaffolding in the Church. Where? We can t say. When? We don't know. It s going to be that type of project. If you have not yet given a gift or made a pledge, please speak to Father Luciano. In order to make the painting of the Church, the cleaning of the ceiling, and so many other projects a reality and so make our church beautiful, we need your help. In a few weeks we are going to begin by taking up some of the carpet, in the sanctuary, to see the condition of the marble. We must relearn the Faith We must relearn, and get back to, the basics of our Roman Catholic Faith. The world we live in does not want to live the Faith fully, if at all. There was a publication, The Baltimore Catechism, that many older adults learned from. It is a good resource of what the Church teaches. As space permits we will print questions and answers from it. Question: What is a Sacrament? Answer: A Sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace. Question: How many Sacraments are there? Answer: There are seven Sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Confession, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. Question: Whence have the Sacraments the power of giving grace? Answer: The Sacraments have the power of giving grace from the merits of Jesus Christ. Question: Do the Sacraments always give grace? Answer: The Sacraments always give grace, if we receive them with the right dispositions. PAGE FOUR Welcome into the Catholic Church We welcome into the Roman Catholic Church, those infants and young children, who have been baptized here recently at Blessed Sacrament. May God s many blessings and graces be with them as they grow in wisdom and strength. Do you know the date of your Baptism? Do you know the Church where you were Baptized? Congratulations We congratulate those couples, who received the Sacrament of Marriage, here at Blessed Sacrament recently. Our best wishes goes with them as they have now entered the married life and may God bless them each and every day. Also, we pray for those couples who are celebrating wedding anniversaries this month. May God continue to strengthen your marriage vows and enlighten you with His grace. In Memoriam Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And may perpetual light shine upon them. The following are those, who were recently buried, from Blessed Sacrament Church. May God strength their families in this time of trial. Violet Carino Joann Ciccone Manuel Enes Mary J. Vadakel We Pray We pray for those who are: ill, awaiting (or recovering from) surgery, homeless, unemployed or underemployed, struggling with finances, struggling with addictions or enduring family problems. May God give them strength, comfort and healing.
