BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk Today, we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. What exactly does this mean? Today, throughout the United States, those who will be teaching the Roman Catholic Faith, in Religious Education Programs, will be commissioned as teachers. This harkens back to when Jesus commissioned seventy -two disciples to go out into neighboring areas to spread the good news of the Gospel. About ten days ago, Deacon Orlando (our new Director of Religious Education) gave a talk to the teachers who will be commissioned at the 9am Mass this Sunday. He compared a milking stool to the teaching of Religious Education. Now, you know that a milking stool has only three legs as opposed to a regular chair with four legs? Each leg of the milking stool is very important because if one breaks, or is missing, the stool is no good. He said that each of the individual legs of the milking stool (in relation to Religious Education) stands for Mass, family and the class. If a child misses the Mass, their religious education becomes deficient. In the same way, if the family does not practice the faith and reinforce what is learned, in the classroom, then that child s religious education becomes deficient. If a child misses the classes then, that child will grow up deficient in the Faith. You can see that all three are needed (Mass, family and the class) in order for the child to grow up with not only a knowledge of the faith. When you have a full knowledge of what it means to be a Roman Catholic, then you can have a vibrant and life changing experience with Jesus. When a child receives the Sacrament of Baptism the parents are told, by the priest or deacon during the ceremony, that they are the first teachers of their child in the ways of faith. How have you been doing with this solemn promise that you made when you had your child baptized? It does not matter how old your child is; you can help your child to get back on track, in terms of their religious education. How? By you, the parent, taking it seriously. If you don't take it seriously, then the child never will. If all you give to your child is a couple of years in order to make a Sacrament, what have you told your child? It s not important. Don t you want your child to go to heaven? Give them the knowledge in order to get there. PAGE TWO Miraculous Medal Novena This Monday, September 12th, after the 12:10pm Mass, we will once again pray the Miraculous Medal Novena. This Novena has not happened here at Blessed Sacrament for many, many years. Every Saturday, before the 12:10pm Mass, prayers are prayed to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. However, these are not the prayers of the Novena to the Miraculous Medal. Where these prayers, on Saturday morning, come from, or are based on, are a mystery (this past Saturday was the last time we will be using those prayers). I have decided to restore the Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, to its proper prayers. Through the generosity of a married couple, who are parishioners, the Novena booklets have already been purchased. We will begin praying the Novena, every Monday, following the 12:10pm Mass. At the end of the Novena, there will be an opportunity to reverence the relic of Saint Catherine Laboure, who is the visionary of the Miraculous Medal. We will begin the Novena, to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal this Monday, September 12th (which just happens to be the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary). Registration for Religious Education Classes for Children It is important that every child, in our Parish, has a firm and complete knowledge, of the Roman Catholic Faith. The Blessed Sacrament Religious Education Program is currently accepting re-registrations and new registrations for students, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade, for the school year 2016-2017. You can find registration forms in the back of the Church or for more information, please call the Religious Education Office at (914) 235-7311, Monday to Thursday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Se Habla Espanol.

The Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Our Annual Tag Sale Our Annual Tag Sale will be taking place from October 8 th to the 10 th (the Columbus Day Weekend). Please bring in items that can be sold to help raise money for the upkeep of Blessed Sacrament Parish. Please make sure that the items you bring are in good shape; and if they are electrical or mechanical that they work. Items can be brought to the Rectory during the week. If you have larger items, please call the Rectory ahead of time so that we can arrange to have them brought directly to the School. Please remember that we are not able to accept any clothing for the Tag Sale. Of course, with any fundraiser we will need volunteers. If you are able to help, even just for a few hours over the course of the Columbus Day weekend, please call the Rectory and leave your name and phone number. Your help is needed, wanted and greatly appreciated. Formed Do you find yourself wondering aimlessly on the internet? Of course you know that this type of behavior can cause you all sorts of problems. Well, we have a solution for you and a place you can go and learn about our precious Roman Catholic Faith and at the same time enjoy good movies, books and audio. I know it seems like a dream but it is true. The Archdiocese has given each parish a one year subscription to a website called: Formed. You can sign up for free and begin using its content right away. All you have to do is go to the website: www.formed.org Once you get to that website, you put in the Parish Code: WGFJ7N (the Parish Code is case sensitive so make sure the letters are all in caps). It will ask you to register as a user just so they can keep track of what programs are popular and which are not. They also have a number of choices in Spanish. Why not take a look and see what is available. PAGE THREE Music Notes for this Weekend By John Wolfe, Organist and Music Director Prelude: Recercar Terzo By Girolamo Cavazzoni (c.1525-1577) Opening Hymn: number 396 Lord of All Hopefulness Offertory Hymn: number 477 Ubi Caritas (We Will Find God) Anthem: O Taste and See By Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Communion Hymn: number 693 Healing River of the Spirit Closing Hymn: number 591 Let All Things Now Living Postlude: All Glory Be To God On High By Andreas Armsdorff (1670-1699) Although taken for granted today, the close association between the organ and the church has not always been in place. In the early days of the organ s history, the instrument served mainly to accompany dancing, and its repertoire consisted largely of transcriptions of vocal works and pieces for other instruments. The organ s role, as an integral part of Christian worship, was a recent development in the late Renaissance era; and the Italian father-son duo of Marcantonio and Girolamo Cavazzoni were at the forefront of this innovation. By the time Girolamo published his music in the mid -sixteenth century, the organ s strength in filling large sanctuaries and its usefulness in grounding the sung Mass were apparent. One of Girolamo s important contributions to the organ s literature, was his pioneering work in the genre of the Recercar, a slow-moving and serious form reminding us of the frequent connection between organ and vocal music. The Recercar Terzo, an obscure masterpiece, takes as its basis the Phyrgian mode, a musical scale that would soon fall into disuse with the advent of Major and Minor scales. The Phyrgian mode lacks the clear sense of progression and goal we associate with the Major and Minor systems, giving the music a quality both wandering and prayerful. The dense and overlapping musical texture here is very similar to the choral music of the same period, with individual lines periodically emerging to shine through, rushing forward in spontaneous rhapsodies.

September 18, 2016 We Need to Update our Census Information Over the last few weeks, we have had over fifty parishioners call, or come in, to update their census information. It helps us to get our records in order and to correct the many mistakes we have found in the information we have. More than half of the parishioners, who contacted us were not even registered, in the parish, even though some of them have lived here for over fifty years. You might ask yourself how can this happen? Well, some people think that because they went to school (Elementary or High) here, they were automatically registered. Such is not the case. Others think that because they received a sacrament (Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation or Marriage) here, they are registered. That also is not the case. There are even people whose Parents lived in the parish and they themselves have never moved out of New Rochelle and they think they are registered. They are not. The reason I mention these three examples is because these are some, of the ones, we have heard, over these past few weeks, as we have sought to update our census information. One of the most common refrains we have heard from people is that they did not register because they did not want to receive Church offertory envelopes. No one, who is registered, is required to use them. We always wish people would because it helps us know that parishioners are actively supporting the parish. However, it is up to each individual person. It is important that you update your Church registration information. You can come into the Rectory and fill out a new census form or you can even call Teresa (our Office Manager) and she will be happy to send you a new form (or even take the information over the phone); and you can drop off the completed information form, in the collection basket, or bring it to the Rectory. PAGE FOUR Organ Recital October 9th On Sunday, October 9th at 2:00pm, Director of Music and Organist John A. Wolfe, will present a recital of organ music spanning five centuries, for the praise of God and the enrichment of the spirit. The music in the program will include works by J.S. Bach, César Franck, Olivier Messiaen and Jean Titelouze. This concert will be free and open to the public, with a freewill offering accepted. We hope you'll join us for this special event! In Memoriam Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And may perpetual light shine upon them. The following are those who were recently buried from Blessed Sacrament Church. May God strengthen their families in this time of trial. Patrick V. Bianco Faye DeFilippo Joseph McDonald Gerda Pasacrita Dorothy Shreck Roy James Tobin Wisdom of the Saints Saint Pius of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) said: Jesus is with you even when you don t feel His presence. He is never so close to you as He is during your spiritual battles. He is always there, close to you, encouraging you to fight your battle courageously. He is there to ward off the enemy s blows so that you may not be hurt. We have close to us an angelic spirit, who never leaves us, for an instant from the cradle to the grave, who guides and protects us like a friend or a brother. The storms that are raging around you will turn out to be for God s glory, your own merit, and the good of many souls. 498

In every Mass, we mention some of the different ranks of angels. Perhaps, you have heard the words but have not realized what is being referred to. Notice the next time you are at Mass, the different ranks that are being mentioned at various times. There are nine ranks of Angels. They are: Angels (this is the rank where the guardian angels would come from), Principalities, Archangels, Powers, Virtues, Dominions, Thrones, Cherubim and Seraphim.
