Syllabus Community theatre - 20731 Last update 16-08-2016 HU Credits: 2 Degree/Cycle: 1st degree (Bachelor) Responsible Department: theatre studies Academic year: 0 Semester: 1st Semester Teaching Languages: Hebrew Campus: Mt. Course/Module description: This course offers a study of community theatre as an artistic medium that articulates 'voices from below'. We will discuss its artistic roots and the manner in which social reality and life stories are transformed into a community performance. We will expose the subversive-political potential of a theatrical performance with non-actors as an artistic action for social change. We will examine various case studies of community performing groups in Israel. This examination will be accompanied by critical textual readings and class discussions regarding body, identity and multiculturalism. During the course we will meet practitioners, social activists, and a performing-arts-community-group (one or more). The course will incorporate workshop exercises that will emerge from the theoretical discussion/readings. Course/Module aims: - Becoming acquainted with the unique characteristics of community theatre - Acquiring theoretical tools for decoding the socio-theatrical mechanism in community performance - Exposure to aspects of social activism embedded within community theatre - Developing critical thinking towards community theatre as it currently exists in various frameworks in Israel. - Experiencing (some) workshop exercises for non-actors. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: - To critically analyze a community performance and unravel socio-theatrical code embedded within it. - To recognize the aspect of social activism and the force for change embedded within practices of performing arts in the community. Attendance requirements(%): Attendance and active participation in 80% of the lessons. Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: - Lecture, viewing, playing and class discussion - Meetings with a performing-arts-community outside the university campus - Meetings with practitioners and social activists. - Theatre exercises in light of the theoretical discussions. page 2 / 5
