In consideration of others, please silence your cell phones. Preparation Prelude Cortège et Litanie Marcel Dupré Words of Welcome The Reverend Pen Peery Chiming the Trinity *Call to Worship Adoration One: I know that my Redeemer lives, All: And that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth; One: For no one lives or dies completely to themselves. All: If we live, we live unto the Lord; if we die, we die unto the Lord. Whether we live or die, we are the Lord s. Thanks be to God! *Processional Hymn Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones lasst uns erfreuen Ye watchers and ye holy ones, bright seraphs, cherubim and thrones, raise the glad strain, Alleluia! Cry out dominions, princedoms, powers, virtues, archangels, angels choirs, Alleluia! O higher than the cherubim, more glorious than the seraphim, lead their praises, Alleluia! Thou bearer of the eternal word, most gracious, magnify the Lord, Alleluia! Respond, ye souls in endless rest, ye patriarchs and prophets blest, Alleluia, Alleluia! Ye holy twelve, ye martyrs strong, all saints triumphant, raise the song, Alleluia! O friends, in gladness let us sing, supernal anthems echoing, Alleluia, Alleluia! To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One, Alleluia!

This morning s prelude, Marcel Dupré s Cortège et Litanie, is often played for All Saints Sunday and memorial services. The opening cortège is a solemn procession that begins quietly. The litanie is a repetitious prayer that grows in intensity until it is combined with the opening cortège, driving to a triumphant and hopeful ending. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession All: Confession The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith. Forgive our indifference to your will. You call us to speak, but we are silent. You require us to do what is just, but we are afraid. Have mercy on us, your muddling, faithless servants, and forgive us. Keep before us the witness of your disciples in every age, that we may live with courage, truth and love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. One: In silent prayer let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud A time of silence will be kept. Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 581) gloria patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Prayer for Illumination Proclamation Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. First Scripture Reading Matthew 5:1-12 pew Bible pg. 4 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Time with Children Children in kindergarten through 2nd grade may leave for First Church. They will return to the sanctuary during the last hymn. Younger children may go to the nursery. Second Scripture Reading 1 John 3:1-3 pew Bible pg. 240 Meditation And That Is What We Are The Reverend Pen Peery *Hymn No. 634 To God Be the Glory to god be the glory The Affirmation of Faith is adapted from A Declaration of Faith. The 11 am service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9, this morning and streamed live at www.firstpres-charlotte.org. *Affirmation of Faith Response The Reverend Katherine Kerr One: In the death of Jesus Christ God s way in the world seemed finally defeated. All: But death was no match for God. The resurrection of Jesus was God s victory over death. One: We are convinced that the life God wills for each of us is stronger than the death that destroys us. All: So we treat death as a broken power. Its ultimate defeat is certain. One: Nothing, not even death, can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Stewardship of Life Presentation of Tithes and Offering Offertory Anthem How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place Johannes Brahms How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts! For my soul, it longeth, yea, fainteth for the courts of the Lord; my soul and body crieth out, yea, for the living God. Blest are they that dwell within Thy house; they praise Thy name evermore! How lovely is thy dwelling place. Invitation to the Table The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper The Great Thanksgiving One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name: The rosebud in the sanctuary celebrates the birth of Meyer James McNabb, son of Lindsay and Ian McNabb. Hymn 634 1 To God be the glory; great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life-gate that all may go in. Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the people rejoice! To God Be The Glory O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory: great things he has done! 2 Great things he has taught us; great things he has done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. (Refrain) Hymn 326 1 For all the saints who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. For All the Saints 4 And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. 2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light. 3 O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle; they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. 5 From earth s wide bounds, from ocean s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

Hymn 260 1 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; his the scepter, his the throne; Alleluia! his the triumph, his the victory alone! Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood: "Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by his blood." Alleluia! Sing to Jesus 2 Alleluia! Not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! he is near us; faith believes nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received him, when the forty days were o'er, shall our hearts forget his promise: "I am with you evermore"? 3 Alleluia! Bread of angels, here on earth our food, our stay; Alleluia! here the sinful flee to you from day to day. Intercessor, friend of sinners, earth's redeemer, hear our plea where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea. 4 Alleluia! King eternal, Lord omnipotent we own; Alleluia! born of Mary, earth your footstool, heaven your throne. As within the veil you entered, robed in flesh, our great high priest; here on earth both priest and victim in the eucharistic feast.
