Page Two LEADERSHIP STEWARDSHIP LITURGY SERVICE THE PARISH AS ONE BODY If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended The eye cannot say to the hand, I do not need you, nor again the head to the feet, I do not need you. Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary. Now you are Christ s body, and individually parts of it. (1 Cor. 12:17-25) The Seven Essen al Elements of Parish Life constantly interrelate, each nurturing and suppor ng the other with the communal celebra on of Sunday Eucharist at the center. Pastor Rev. Page Three A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M. October 22, 2017 Ever since: We try harder corporate jingles or as they are properly called, mission statements, have gotten my attention. Some are clever and I wish I would have thought of them: I use Dial and I wish everyone would. Pretty clever, quite good. Not much to argue about. Just Do It, dear Nike that can be good, but it also becomes the source of a lot of trouble, even sin. Learn from Pinocchio: Give a little whistle. Think before you do. The Daily Grill restaurant chain has a slogan and cap: Think Daily I used to wear it when I gave tests while teaching. Then I allowed the students to wear thinking caps during tests. I thought the practice was fun, the principal not so much. Kind of fun. No? Then there are political slogans and shibboleths. Influencing thought, these often used catch phrases change attitudes, cause some people to expand their awareness, mottos inflame societies and have cause division and strife. Political campaign slogans have particular ringing tones: I like Ike Nixon s the One. I ll stop before controversy brews. Vietnam era slogans, Peace era phrases, and Civil Rights words. Go there with caution even extreme caution. Avoid altogether. Of current interest is: I Stand for the Flag and I kneel for the Cross. The cross and the flag are important symbols. Symbols are a leap different from signs. Signs merely point away from themselves to another distant reality the Freeway 91 sign points to the freeway, in itself it is not the freeway. The barber pole indicates the proximity of a barber; it is not the barber shop. Signs can be taken away without emotion. A symbol is a sensible reality that participates in what it represents. Symbols embody what they represent, they are sensible realities in themselves; people have emotional responses to symbols. A symbol has a life of its own and gives meaning to a group which is unified by its reality. Thus the flag is different from the barber pole. Symbols demand and command respect. Old Glory participates in our nation as it represents life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, the land of the free, and the home of the brave the flag really is My Country and our battles. I notice it to be different from other flags when I am in a foreign country. Air Force One WOW ever see it on a tarmac or fly over head? It s America My Homeland in Paris, London, or Rome. I get a fit of patriotism when I see Air Force One regardless of who the President is. A wedding ring is the symbol of the faithfulness and love Menotti and Lena have for each other. The Cross is the symbol for the presence of Christians; Jesus suffering which brought salvation. Christians are unified by the Cross. The Easter Candle s bright flame is the light that leads us over the waters of death to new life, it is Jesus Resurrection. Try to create the realities of a Country, the Office of the President, a Marriage, the presence of a Christian, the Resurrection of Jesus in any other way is most difficult. Symbols are powerful realities. Symbols make us pause. Symbols make us say: WOW isn t that just great? I Stand for the Flag and I kneel for the Cross. Consider the reality of the symbol of the Cross. Give the Cross the respect it deserves. Yes, do it! Neither a sign nor symbol - The Holy Eucharist is the Real Presence of Our Savior. Symbols demand respect. The holy demands reverence. Give the Holy Eucharist present in our tabernacle the reverence it deserves. As respect for Flag and Cross are important topics today, don t forget the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist in the tabernacle is front and center in St. Juliana Church; it is not in a side chapel. The Cross is front and center, not hidden behind a screen or loud speaker. The habit was to genuflect in the presence of the Holy Eucharist in a Roman Catholic Church. Give an act of reverence to the Holy Eucharist and Cross. It should influence church behavior. Just Do It! We behave one way in an auditorium, stadium, or theater. We behave differently in a library. Different still is behavior in a hospital. Practice good church behavior. We sing Jingle Bells, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, or R-E-S-P-E-C-T one way. The National Anthem is sung another way, take that hat off to give tribute to Our Great Country. Sing All Creatures of Our God And King Holy God, Praise Thy Name and other liturgical church songs so as to praise God, Jesus, Mary, and the saints. It s the way you practice what you believe. I recall my Mom buying school clothes, play clothes, and church clothes. Man, oh man, I m old. Remember dressing up for airplane travel, even in peasant class? Yikes! Really old! Have it your way is not always the best practice; some actions are not subjective rather they are objective, clearly right and proper in themselves. Patriotism and religious belief are close relatives. Stand for the Flag, Kneel for the Cross, Genuflect for the Blessed Sacrament, Praise God with song. Can you say: I do these actions and I wish everyone would? Respect for symbols and the holy is simply a matter of conversion; understanding what they represent and responding with proper behavior. It is what we do after we say: We Believe. One thing about all good people: We try harder.
