Number Symbols in the Apparatus 11-3 The Biblical text always spells out the numbers. Hebrew Ordinal Numbers 11-4 Ordinal numbers are first, second, third, etc. 1 st through 10 th are adjectives Usually attributive adjectives, so they follow the noun and match in gender, number, and definiteness. Cardinal Numbers 11-6 Cardinal Numbers are one, two, three, etc. One is an attributive adjective. It follows its noun and agrees in gender, number, and definiteness. It is sometimes used as an indefinite article. man one man = a = א י ש א ח ד Two through Ten are nouns. They have both masculine and feminine forms. The have absolute and construct forms Higher numbers (20, 30, etc.) are nouns with no gender.
Gender of Cardinal Numbers 11-7 The digits 1-10 have gender. Higher digits have no gender. (E.g., 20, 30, 40) Digits 1&2 match the gender of the noun E.g., בן א ח ד one son vs. ב ת א ח ת one daughter Digits 3-10 have the opposite gender of the noun E.g., ש ל ש ה ב נים three sons ש ל ש ב נ ות vs. Called chiastic concord three daughters Some computer databases call ש ל ש ה masculine, etc., so that they can say that the number matches the gender of the noun that it counts.
